My range is 23-27mpg lately on any octane i've tried on gas stations here in fremont, ca. This doesn't relate to quality either...76, shell, Chevron, Arco, Am/Pm, Valeros...etc My engine also eat's oil like a mofo, thinking it's valve seals cuz i changed my pcv....

I just tested my mileage on all 3 octane levels last week and here's what I found:

87: Holy SHIITE!!! My car runs like a turd on this gas!!! I got 20.15mpg

89: What I normally run. Car runs good, has good power and pick up and gets 24-26mpg depending on my driving style. 25.21 mpg this particular run.

93: I see nor feel no difference between 89 and 93 except in price (gives a weight reduction in wallet lol) Anyways feels good and got 25.59 mpg.

All runs were done half city, half highway and from full to e on every tank and all gas was from the same BP station (Chevron Gas). I drove 981 miles doing this testing over a two week period.

Also I highly recommend using Chevron, or Shell gasoline because it is the cleanest and my car runs like crap if I get gas at the Raceway or Racetrack or Pure stations. They can be cheaper, but you'll pay in the long run. Lucky me though, 75% of the stations near by ar BP and they all use Chevron gas.

I have a '91 with 125,000 miles and of course the owner's manual recommends 89 octane or higher. I almost always run 93 octane because I get noticeably better highway mpg. The last mpg test I did (30% city / 70% highway) I got 25.8 mpg. While I have not tested mpg with 89 (just eyed the gauge for an estimate) I would say that number would have be at least 2-3 mpg less.

Aren't "Genuine" Nissan OEM oxygen sensors Bosch? I'm pretty sure I remember seeing both names on one I changed. You can get them cheaper than $65. Just without the rising sun logo and dealership mark-up.

I've been curious about my MPG lately so I searched and came up with this thread. Appearantly my car is running pretty damn efficiently. I Fill up to around ~1/2 tank or 6.6-7 gallons using 87 octane fuel. With mixed driving I can go ~170-180 miles on that. I find my driving habits are a big factor. I can go through more than 1/4 in 2.5 hrs or "fun time" whereas that 1/4 could have gotten me through 2.5-3 days of daily a$$. I had my timing advanced to 24 for a couple months and ran 93 octane. I loved the response but the increasing costs drove me to set the timing back and run the lower grade 87.

I love my car.

Fyi, a basketball goal fell on top of it recently which means a trip to the body shop is in order .

I bet half of the people who've replied aren't recording MPG properly.

What I do is, I fill up my tank until the pump clicks and reset my trip meter. Next time I get gas, I fill the tank until the pump clicks. I take miles driven and divide it by how many gallons went in. It's more accurate than eyeballing.

Worst recorded was 18mpg. I got 20mpg 100% city driving before fuel filter and MAF cleaning. Best recorded was something like 26.6 all highway.

All of this on timing 100% advanced and 87 octane.

Try getting a new coolant temp sensor.

Beyond octane having a resitance to knock and ping, engines that are designed with a knock sensor are more prone to retarding timing on lower grade octanes during WOT, or even when acceleration and load are higher than normal. Retarded timing decreases power out put which means that less energy will be used to it's miles per gallon.1989-1990 KA24E's do not use a knock sensor therefore are not prone to less performance to gas mileage. You can use crappier fuels anyways and still achieve the same gas mileage. More than likely because the KAe's run at under 9.0:1.KA24de's are more sensitive to the octane that they are feed mostly due that ignition timing is considerably higher as well as it's CR @ 9.5:1 than the E's, and in closed loop run the knock sensor. At WOT using crappier fuels will retard the timing since air mass will become greater with acceleration causing whatever lower octane to burn sooner than later, this will basically increase leaness and higher cylinder temprature which will cause your common case of knock and ping in which everytime the ecu reads the signal it slightly retards it's timing. As for me I always use 91octane, california fuel is mixed with 5% ethanol, I have noticed no drop in gas mileage since the install of my header, intake, aluminum flywheel, high flow cat and CatBack. The list goes on but I will just stop there. Recently took a trip to Chico Cali which is 187 miles from where I live only used half a tank of gas averaging at 4000RPM in 4th and 5th gear (80~95MPH). On AVG. that is about 30MPG.

Lately I've been getting about 29 mpg. That's mostly driving in suburban areas, and back roads, pushing it pretty hard and having a good time. I don't get on the highway much unless I'm going somewhere out of the ordinary. I assume mine is good because I went the route of light parts to gain some performance. Got flywheel, pulley, no A/C, stripped trunk, and lighter wheels. Also have intake, header, high flow cat, and exhaust if that would change anything. I could probly get better mpg if I got it tuned, as it seems to run a little rich. I usually run 91 though.

I went to the Nissan dealership to pick up an 05 murano. I decided to take a look at Sentra SE-R V spec. They actually pollute more on there higher compression engines and don't make an insane amount of power compared to the KA. When I looked at the MPG it wasn't that much better for a 2.5litre. I was pretty surprised. The Murano I drive has AWD, 6 cylinder 245BHP, and gets almost as good of gas mileage as my KA 240sx...

My dad always used BP, and the midgrade (89 or 91 I think) fuel.

I just recently got the car. Filled it up with Shell V-Power. Waiting to use at least half the tank before I pour a bottle of Red Line in the tank and top it off. We'll see what the mileage is. It'll probably be crappy since I've been running the A/C lately. My dad claimed to get between 23-25 mpg inter-city/highway.

I don't think I agree with the different octane levels affecting mileage. I think it's more of what's in the tank and driving habits. I know in the winter I tend to get horrible mileage mostly because of the mixture of the fuel, partly because I drive slower thanks to the weather. I tend to get the best mileage when I hover around 70 on the highway (it's hard fighting those speed demon urges!).

Just my .02. I don't know crap about cars of mileage, but I just absorb whatever I read in various car magazines (mostly consumer reports) around the house.
