I looked into Mk3 VR6 GTi's before really looking at the 240, and I find myself wondering again. Here's the deal, with a 240, I'd want to really go for it, SR20 and so forth, the problem being, I'd probably get rid of the car when I get to college. With a GTi however, it is quite possible to get 200+hp for under 500$. That with some suspension work, tires, and a few other mods, and I have 215hp and about that much torque in a great handling car, and I spent the same or less than an SR would cost. What do you say?

What is a VR6 GTi ?

At first I thought it was a mitsubishi galant

Now I am thinking Thirdf Gen VW VR6 Golf

That would be sweet, but I think they are ugly plus its not a NIssan.

Yes, Mk3 GTi VR6 is a 3rd gen Golf GTi with the VR6 engine (174hp 173lb/ft). FWD and a little uglier are the problems I see with it. I'll be 16 in July. Anyone else?

I also looked into the VR6 in Jetta form.I chose my 3.5se altima over it.Whats up with a V6 or "W6" as VW calls it, only having 200hp?The new Altima has 245 the Maxima has 255 and the VW cost as much or more depending on options.I also got more room inside.;)

Its a much smaller car(Golf), so you are lucky to have a V6 in there... I was reading a tech article on it earlier thi week, pretty cool

The VR6 is a great car, I drove it once because my friend had it, it was a 2001 model. I liked driving it, it had some power, I know it had more power than my 240 (S14), but I know that my car handles much better. The VR6 had a lot of body roll, thats what I didnt like, and I didnt like the seating position. The way I had to sit in that car was not comfortable enough for me to be driving in the twisties. But here is the funny thing, well, its actually not funny at all, but this is what happened. My friend and I were on this mountain, and that is where I tried out his car, and he tried mine. After we were done, we started to race down the mountain, and... Yup, I think you guessed it by now. I got to the bottom of the twisty mountain (dayamn, those are some tight turns) and I waited there for a while. I thought that he should have been down, but he wasnt, so I went up a ways, and I found him with his fender jammed into his front left tire, his hood smashed, radiator liquid was all over the place, and man, this car looked bad. He hit a gaurd rail, doing like 30 (thats how sharp this turn is) and he hit it because he entered too hot, and front wheel drive couldnt bite then turn, and he smashed it. So that goes to show that a 7,000 dollar car can defeat a $20,000 car in the handling game. And I would rather have handles, than power. But just to say, the first time I went down that mountain, I did the same thing he did, I entered the turn too hot and I was sliding right into that rail. My brakes were locked as a jail cell, and I was relying on my $30 Rage, "Road Hugger" tires to stop me. I am a religious guy, and I thank God a million times for stopping me 2 inches short of that metal. That is one of my only three most scary experiences in my life. All three which deal with my car. That is a deadly turn. Well, I am getting a little carried away, but thats just what I got to say. PEACE

Oh ya, and that is the experience that led me into wanting the 300zx brake swap soo bad. That is why I am asking for help to get those brakes installed. PEACE

Entering a turn too hot is basically what PabloHoney said. It is when you are entering a turn too fast, and its like you are in a trap. If you brake, turn, pray, or do whatever, you are in trouble. If you are in a road course, you can enter a turn "too hot" and then you will go off course. But if you were in my friend's situation, then you will crash, as he did. PEACE

GTIs are notorious for lifting the inside rear wheel during sharp cornering (ive seen it many times at autoxs).

Jettas do it too but not as bad. Corrados are the worst (ive seen a corrado lift its inside rear over 2 ft into the air on race tires at an autox).

ive never seen a 240 autox but pretty much every nissan ive seen autox (a bunch of SE-Rs and a few older Z cars) has cornered pretty flat. of course the SE-Rs are considered one of the best japanese cars for autox(that and the miata).

drive a hopped up beetle sometime (aircooled bug not the new one) that might make you rethink the chick car notion with VWs (180HP in a bug will run 11s on slicks and is a pretty wild ride since the front end will go about 3ft into the air when you launch)

The Jetta is actually smaller inside, I can't fit in a Jetta, but I can fit in a Golf (make sense of that?). I'm 6'3 by the way. Anyway, the major thing is I don't want to sink too much into this car, and a 240, knowing how crazy I am, I would end up sinking tons of cash into. Lemme list the Pro's and Cons to the GTi VR6:Pros- more power, more added performance for cheaper, lower insurance, european (sorry guys, they usually* make better cars, fewer ricers too), more practical (hatchback), my dad is still kinda pushing it.Cons: uglier (I like it though), FWD, front heavy, more expensive to fixAs far as mods: resonatorectomy, de-coned airbox, I'll save some time, check that site I linked you all to. Neuspeed for the intake, chip, and, later, some strut bars to stiffen it up, brakes (later), and a few other items I can't remember at the moment but probably H&R/Bilstein suspension set-up, and at some relatively early point, some 17's with sticky's, tires are the best mod, hands down.. So, in essence, I would have a fast, and despite what you all say, with a few mods Golf's handle really well, and simple little car. Meanwhile, I'd save for an SR for a little while, plus have to deal with parental and legal issues involved with it, all this for a car I won't drive much of, if any of, college after three years of highschool use (yes, I'm a freak).

i have a couple of friends with vw's and they pay out the *** for parts, if your'e in high school or college for that matter and going to be low on cash get the 240. im sorry but $500 will not even get you a decent start on that car, plus those cars are a pain in the *** to work on yourself(v6 in a small car). and for the lower insurance part, you might want to double check on that cause the insurance co. knows what you got under the hood. i know i'm biased but the 240 looks better, is easy as hell to work on, and parts are cheaper. don't forget 240's are damn sexy too!!!!!!!!

you don't have to have an sr20 to have a fast 240, the ka is is a really good motor and with i/h/e is pretty quick

I linked the 33hp (edit: making it 207, far more than a KA with basic mods)) for 500$ thing to the original post. Some of those horsies are free too... Insurance for a GTi VR6 is roughly that of a Civic (checked on VW Vortex). The reason being that not many young people own them, they get in fewer wrecks, and people don't really know what they have under the hood. I won't be that strapped for cash, I just don't want to spend $4000+ for a possible legal SR and a few basic mods when I can spend less and get almost as much power on a car that I will probably not own for more than 4 years.

the insurace quote might be from a golf not a gti and the amount of young people that own them doesn't matter, it only matters how old YOU are, ins rates have a ton of variables so you should ask your ins co for a quote. also vw's are more expensive to fix than civics.they also get in fewer wrecks bcuz there are not a trillion gti's like there are civics. if you look at the bottom of that page you linked he says he maybe has 150hp to the wheels the ka gets that if not a little more with i/h/e. also 4 years is a long time to own a vehicle so make sure you are comfortable with your decision

True, but they look at numbers of accidents as well, and the number of accidents is lower on VW's because not many enthusiasts and/or morons drive them. It was a GTi VR6 too...

the problem is that a 240 with a KA is "quick" "peppy" "torquey"

it's not "fast" "wow" or "whoo doggey!"

the sr will make it the latter 3

the KA keeps it in the realm of cars like the Mini Cooper S and the PT Cruiser Turbo...chick cars :'(

I know a guy who swapped a VR6 backward into a 92 gti. Not sure what mark that is, but I think it's A2/3. But anyway, the best he could pull at the track was a 15.3 or so, and his car was tubbed out. You could get there with a few well-spent hundreds on a KA, and no torque steer to boot.

I've driven a few golfs/gtis, and all of them after the mid eighties handle like poor man's luxury cars. That is to say, the ride is cushy, and they corner like a ford taurus. Get all the sway bars or whatever people say will cover the body roll - it's like bandaids on a knife wound.

If you think those dinky mods will net you 33hp, you've got another thing coming. 10hp from an open airbox and any noticable gain from using Mobil1.................it just ain't happening......and the word gullible is not in the dictionary either.

Wake up please. The VR6 is only marginally faster than a KADE (the MK3s anyway). They handle like garbage and are FWD. They are also extremely ugly. Also I wouldn't want to buy a hatchback that is just as heavy as my coupe, it just doesn't make sense. Plus they cost more to fix, and cost more to buy initially. Also you will not make a lot of power with mods (not as much as you think).

I've driven my friend's 98 and was thoroughly unimpressed. The only thing it had going for it was more power. Shifter and pedal feel were absolute garbage, and the steering wasn't as direct and precise as on the 240. Struts, springs, sway bars, and strut bars, and it handled worse than my 240 with Apexi WS's...much worse.

But if you want it, its for sale, 98, 70k, very well maintained, new tires, clutch, brakes, wheel bearings. Very strong. He's in NJ, didn't even notice where you're at.

Oh, and as an explanation :

"Total: 33 Added Horsepower + Stock VR6 Horsepower of 174 = 207 Paper Horses

In reality, my stock VR6 at my elevation is probably somewhere around 150 - at the wheels. "

Paper and online hp calculators do NOT work.

That car would not dyno near 200hp.

Dont go into that under the thoughts that you will have 200hp w/ what that site says...(especially the fact they spoke about motor oil as a modification, lol)

Ok, first of all, why are you trying to get the VR6 when the 1.8T is the way to go? Many people who want to have a performance car, go with the 1.8T. Drop a chip on the thing and you do get some serious power increases. One guy told me about a stock VR6 that he drove and a stock 1.8T that he raced. The 1.8T pulled pretty hard on him and he lost the race.

I thought of getting one of these myself, but couldn't justify the money when I could get a 240. As far as insurance, unless you have a quote from an insurance company, you are in for a big surprise. The insurance company KNOWS exactly what's under the hood because you give them the VIN. The rate the car at how much power it has and how much it's worth. They take your age into consideration also and they work some black magic and come up with your rate. Don't think that just because you are driving a VW then your insurance will be lower. The logic is similar to thinking that driving a 3series BMW will be less than a 240sx because fewer young people have them. :rolleyes

VW makes a very good car. I don't think they are chick cars at all. My advise would be to get a 240 SR or KA, you won't go wrong. No matter what you get though, you should try to keep it as long as you can. Rather than getting rid of it when you go to college. Just my opinion.
