i disagree.

I'd go with the VR6 and a turbo kit before going with a 1.8T and a chip....i have 4 friends w/ 1.8t's....one jetta, one A4, one beetle, and a GTI....all chipped, all very slow. none of them have 200hp....they all were not happy with the performance from a 'race' point of view, and the VW guys both said if they were to do it again they would go the vr6 route, and turbo it (i also have a friend w/ a 10 sec vr6+turbo in a jetta)

Ok...so how much would it cost to turbo a VR6? Would it be about the same to drop in an SR20DET into a 240? I don't know that many people with VWs or 1.8Ts. If you say they aren't all that fast...I believe you. I was conveying the limited and second hand knowledge that I had heard. If he wants a turbo charged/fastest car for the money...then he should get the 240 and drop in the JDM motor. It's really hard to beat that price/performance ratio.

Is it a black one from Jersey (Union County?), that thing is fast as f*** and pretty stock looking.

If you end up going FWD, get a Honda...you'll go fast for cheap.

Lemme state a few things first. While it may seem that I'm pushing the GTi, I really am undecided. Also, as far as the 1.8T is concerned, finding a 1.8T for cheap enough is a pain, my bro has an A4 1.8T (and 10g$ in debt) w/ chip and exhaust (mmmm... free exhaust) and he has 205hp and 250 torque. I ride with him to school daily, so I can attest to the power of that engine. Like I said, too expensive, if I found one I'd jump on it. I also go back and forth on whether or not to totally ditch the car when I get to college, since my parents will pretty much give me a car (I love the HOPE (GA-lottery-funded-scholarship)), and it would be fun to have something else to mess with. I don't want to spend more than a couple grand just in case though, and an SR or relatively heavily modded (I'm shooting for more than 200hp) would be more expensive than that. The 200hp link, that stuff works, its been proven by other people, and the reason he has 150, since you obviously didn't read the whole thing, is due to his high elevation (the ATL area is only about 800ft above sea level, not the several thousand he's at). I would do those relatively basic engine mods, then focus on the suspension, which I have known for a while is quite mushy. Any other comments are appreciated, just don't start bashing me. I knew I'd get a biased response but don't start the "anything not at least Nissan sucks ***" thing. edit: the VR6 chip is 100$.

the soon to hit our shores VW R32 AWD is gonna own all other compact VW tuners. but it'll still be too heavy, too sluggish off the line, and way way too much money for what you get. Still an improvement over what's available now though. VW continues to trade off of the Audi prestige, and thinks people will spend money to have an "almost-Audi"

And there are e few good V-Dubs. the old skewl bugs are really bad@$$. My dad was telling me about the good old days of putting big@$$ pistons in one and all the other cool engine build ups. i was even tempted to get one. This guy down the street has a really nice white one. And my friends old 89 Jetta GLI is pretty cool too. It pulls pretty strong and is pretty quick too.

first off why are we talking VW in here? they plain suck and only old people and women drive them. They can't handle worth 2 sh!ts think about it 1000 lbs vr6 engine up front nothing out back can you say understeer, also its a VW it will start leaking on you after 20K. and if you want german quality get a 328 or 325 that'll be beat the pants off a vr6 gti.

Insurance on a 325 (I looked into them first, friend of my bro's has one) is quite frankly, a *****. I was hoping for a slightly less biased response, but that's alright. VDubs can kick some **** if you do it right. As far as the mobile one, and a few other mods (alright, most of them), I know they'd have little or no gain, but the resonatorectomy, de-coned airbox, and chip are definitely worthwhile, and cheap. I'm thinking if I go that direction I may just go straight pipes for exhaust anyway, depending on loudness, around here, the cops hardly care. (for loud at least, other things well...) I'm about middle ground still on this, but then again, I have 3-3 1/2 months, so yaknow...edit: I wish SR's and RB's or turbo KA's weren't so expensive, and I wish I knew whether or not I was going to keep the car in college, a 240 would be a fun project...

I'd love to, I really would, but that's kinda expensive around here (usually 3000$ +, and that's if I find somebody who knows what they're doing to help me install). Honestly, I'd rather have the 240 with an SR, and keep it as a project when I get to college, but that's expensive and I'm not sure the ol' parents will go for it, they'd probably rather that I traded in the car when they get me "something nicer" for college.

speakin of the fwd vs. rwd (as mentioned earlier in the post)....i was talking to this guy last week about my car which im selling and he was saying aobut how he wanted to keep mazda protge(i think, it was an older model, like a early 90's) b/c " you can do alot more with FWD" . those were his words, but of course he also told me i should go to advanced auto and get an aluminum wing b/c it would be perfect for my car as far as the air flow..go figure:rolleyes

now that i think of it, what can you do with fwd that you cant do with rwd? im guessin he just didnt know what he was talking about right?

You can have torque steer...

edit: I didn't know resale was that bad on VR6's, but then again, 240's sell really well.. I'm leaning back over 240SX way because of a few things mentioned here, and a not-so-warm-welcome back to Vortex, it seems no one will answer questions there...

yeah but that's just us 240-lovers, and other ricers jumping on the 240 bandwagon, that's really starting to piss me off. Anyways, I do like VW, but for hp figures like that in a fwd platform, and for that much money, I'd much rather go for a prelude. It might be a honda, but making as much torque as a ka and as much hp as an Sr, in a naturally aspirated motor, definetly warrants honda some props, just wish the car was a little lighter, rwd wouldn't hurt either.

hey, I believe that you get what you pay for. VWs are awesome cars, but to make them fast you have to sink a lot of money into them.

I have a buddy back home who got his hands on a VW Vento (German spec MK3 Jetta). He has a VR6 completely built, Quaife 6 spd. transmission, VR6 Corrado LSD and too many more mods to mention. I remember when he had his stock 5spd. He could get to 160mph relatively fast. I took a picture of his speedo when we were at that speed, but it was too dark and it didn't come out. This is the kind of guy who would constantly pick on V8s just for kicks. I was with him when he raced a brand new mustang and modified BMW 540.

In conclusion. go for a 240 and do the SR swap. you are a high school student and a soon to be college student, and I will tell you from experience...you want a car that will be cheap to repair. VWs are not cheap. I can tell you this because I wanted to get a VR6 Jetta, but after weighing it all out I realized that I will have little or no money to throw around.

However, it is you who will be driving the car. You have to choose for yourself what car to get. Dont let anybody push you in any direction, but listen to those who know and have experience so you can make an educated choice. Good luck on choosing a car. I know its a hard process and I hope that whatever you choose makes you happy, because in the end that is all that really matters...
