I dont mean like fresh produce stands organized by local farmers, I mean weird stuff from unusual people.

I once bought some "beef" jerky from a guy selling it out of his white van on the side of the road in rural Spokane WA. It was decent but who knows where the hell the meat came from. He had a big white beard, torn pants, and a dirty sweatshirt -- I really do think it was roadkill, but it was seasoned enough to mask whatever it really was. I ate the entire bag.

I once skipped school and drove an hour and half north where I bought a blueberry pie from two amish looking girls in white bonnets (probably menonites) running a tiny little pie stand off the main road. It was the BEST DAMN PIE I'D EVER EATEN. I showed up for my fifth period econ class (I skipped the entire morning of high school) and scarfed the whole thing down while my peers looked on.

There's lots of roadside stands in Thailand selling fried bugs, but I've never been daring enough to try. I'll do roadkill from a van, but I won't eat fried bugs. Blend them into a salad and maybe I'll try them, but not by themselves.

Cool story bro.

The people who sell here are usually Moonies or some other cult group, so I avoid them like the plague.

The Keys had some good limes from people on the road tho...

We live pretty far off the beaten path, about 5 miles from the nearest commercial building, and about 7 miles from the "city center" of Surprise.

There's a guy who's been setting up an old rickety trailer (like a 60's tow-behind sleeps-two travel trailer) on the 2-lane desert road to our neighborhood... selling ice cream and snow cones.

Forget the fact that MAYBE 100 cars pass that way on a weekday. I'm still trying to figure out how he keeps it cold (generator?) and how he sells enough to make money. Seems he'd do better getting a job at McDonald's.

I'd rather make less money and work for my self. Then work for McDonald's. But buy food all the time form any one of the hundreds of taco trucks around me.

Do taco trucks count?
I bought from countless taco trucks/stands in Los Angeles, decent food most of the time.

I really want that pie you're talking about though. :(

I would also like to find two amish girls on the side of the road and eat their pie.

I did it once in Garden City, KS. I thought it was authentic mexican food, I mean the guy didn't speak any English. I paid for it later!

...it was either food poisoning, or the 10ft python I kissed made me sick.

Mmm, snapper. if the price was right, I'd be tempted. Not like it takes much to catch stuff off a bridge tho.

I generally steer clear of the side-of-the-road sellers that have anything that needs any form of temperature control in order for it to not make me sick... specifically because I always hear so many horror stories. My dad got a hot dog from a hot dog stand outside a home depot once. Don't think he shat right for a week.

Any place that boils the dogs shouldn't be a problem.

yeah but who the hell knows what's going on behind the giant stack of buns? Could be some mildly warm stagnant water that's had the dude's hands in it after he scratched is a** and sneezed in it.

Your immunity is weak! Every time you grill over charcoal you can get the same type of bacteria.

And food service laws require you to use gloves when handling anything you're going to eat. If you otherwise, report 'em.

During my last year of high school, my high school (at the time a 90 year old building) was undergoing preparations for demolition so it could be replaced with a shiny new, space-inefficient but less claustrophobic design. Every day at lunch time, a bunch of Mexican women would show up to (discretely) sell home-made Tamales to the construction workers. One of my teachers tipped me off and I ended up eating tamales for lunch pretty often afterward. They were really good, with very good corn masa.

I loves me some authentic Mexican food (and ladies).

I spent a week puttering around north Florida and southern Georgia on a dual-sport looking for boiled peanut stands one summer... I loooove boiled peanuts.

Sadly, they're an unknown up here in the Heartland. Sweet corn, though!

The roach coaches around here are just pickup trucks with food buns on the back and heaters. They sell pre-packaged sh*t.

A taco truck is kinda rare.

idk. i'd never buy food on the side of the road unless it was like a hotdog stand or something proper looking. usually i enjoy buying food from ethnic public events. like the mexican/asian soccer games at the park. they have hundreds of ppl selling food in tents and stands and such. usually delish. especially chicken on a stick.

Weird, they are one in the same in these here parts.
I also forgot about the hundreds of dollars I've spent on jerky stands while traveling to the coast and back. When you see the deer and salmon being smoked and dried behind the stand...you know it's gonna be awesome.

if I drive by something that loooks good, damn right I will.

down here, it's not to uncommon to drive by a parking lot with a truck pulling a smoker.

It always leads to good eats.

There is one stand here where some young boys (7 to 12 I'd say) sell their fresh fruits and vegetables they grew in their own garden. I but stuff from them all the time because I like to see young kids doing something productive rather than being a pain in the a** to their parents. I hear they make a few grand a season doing it. I've had some of the most awesome cookies and other snacks I've bought from roadside-sellers. Lemonade stands are also quite popular here.

Their's actually a fruit I've only ever seen in intersections. We call it mamon/mamonciyo those are spanish names. No clue what these are called in any other language. They these tiny little round fruits the somewhat what resemble tiny lemons. They are around a inch in diameter with a very smooth skin. A some what brittle skin the breaks in the when you bite it with your front teeth. Inside its a orange kinda husk you suck on until there's nothing left but the seed. Nothing like EVER taste!
