I want to put the oem xenon lights in my nonxenon car. The harness I labeled 2 sends power/ ground to the ballast and high beam bulb if im not mistaken, so what does the harness labeled 1 do?

If I had to guess, it's the one for the park lights and turn signal. Unfortunately I don't see much in the FSM. I suppose it could also be the leads to the height adjustment motor?

I think 1 is highbeam and running lights and 2 is HID. But I don't know without looking.

The turn signal is a stand alone harness all the way to the left. The harness labeled 2 has 2 sets of wires coming from it. A set is red and black and goes to the high beam, and a set is green and black and goes to the ballast. Then there is a harness that goes from the ballast inside of the housing I'm guessing to the HID. I was thinking the harness labeled 1 was either for DTRL or some type of leveling motor as Heath mentioned.

There is a cabin controlled motor leveling, but I didn't think it was included in the light assembly that I have ever noticed.

I posted this on vipstylecars also, and I got a response saying that it is the selector harness (high, low, auto, etc) but he wasn't sure.

The 2nd gen never had any motor leveling in the US so seriously doubt that is what it is....the 2000-2001 did have Xenon headlights but never auto-leveling. I nearly bought a 2001 and I went over all the features of it, auto-leveling wasn't any option or included.

We've gone through this before with other posters, you should just get some nice Sylvania Silverstars and call it a day. Just not worth the amount of cash and money that is involved to do this....way better use of money to put in a GPS/iPod connection head unit, or re-had stuff. This is just way too much money for the return on investment.

$400 for the lights $2.00 for some connectors. My stock clear headlights are super clear so I could sell those to recoup some of the cost.

Sylvania silverstars are one of the worst choices in automotive bulbs.....in exchange for the blueish color, you get a very short rated life, and LESS lumens than a clear, non tinted bulb........slick marketing to fool the uneducated.

I'm confused.
I understand that you want to put hid xeon in.
Is the headlamp assembly that you are putting the hid into, is it non hid?

THere are basicly two types of headlamps/lights.
1. Projectors: these are hid/ballast setups. they are generally metal wear the bulb sits because of the heat. have a cutoff shield that creats a flat line the cuts off the top of the light. always have an optical lens that is actually ground and polished.
2. Reflectors: these tend to be halogen. Usually plastic.

The main difference between the two is the computer design of the reflection of the light. the 'light' or hot spot on the bulb is in different locations on the hid from the halogen. Therefor, installing HID into a lamp designed for halogen will produce much more glare and far less light on the road ahead.

a picture taken looking at the front is not the best way to determine if the light is better.
You would take the picture at a wall or flat surface about 30 ft away.

so, if someone corrects your misinformation, they are a "hater" ???? Grow up.Research your information, before posting garbage please. Anyone who does the most basic of research would know the sylvania silverstars are junk.I refuse to do your homework for you,but will gladly provide a link that will enlighten you if you care to educate yourself so you can benefit from the knowledge gained, and actually help, rather than hinder others with misinformation........http://www.danielsternlighting.com/

mrcrews,

Im not sure how familiar you are with the y33, but the 1998 (which I have) came with clear non-projector H4 halogen headlamps.
Then from 1999-2001 the y33 came with black or clear non-projector D2R Xenon HID headlamps. Why Nissan/Infiniti didn't put projectors in the HID headlamps I don't know.

What I did was take my 98 lights out and put a set of 99 lights in. I had to rewire the stock H4 hi/lo combination bulb harness to power the two separate (H1/D2R) bulbs.

You did the correct thing swapping in lights with reflectors designed for the HID bulb illumination characteristics.I would suggest monitoring your stock wiring as although the original halogen low beam bulb is rated at a higher wattage than the HID replacement you chose, the HID system presents a much larger initial inrush current load to power the ballast in order to ignite the bulb.My guess is the later 99-01Q originally equipped with the HIDs from the factory utilized a heavier duty wiring harness/circuit to account for this.

It is manually adjusted in cabin to 3 presets.

Still waiting for a Sliver star to fail, but it has only been 10 years.

Bulbs are not rated in time since installation, but in hours burned,and the silverstar has a Tc rating {time when 62% of the batch of bulbs tested by manufacturer fail} of 150 hours {compared to a standard high quality "regular"bulb average of 800-1000 hours Tc}

either you do not drive much {hours} with the lights on, you got extremely lucky, or much, much more likely you are experiencing greater bulb life due to voltage drop at the headlights themselves{extremely common},which GREATLY extends bulb life, at the expense of optimal performance. Nissan, and most other manufacturers use very small gauge wiring in their headlamp harnesses to save $$$ and weight which causes this drop....it can be easily measured with a standard multimeter see here for instructions http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech ... elays.html ,and generally increases as the cars age due to resistance buildup in the multitude of connectors and joints in the wiring harness.

Maybe you will get lucky and have one fail soon, and then you can upgrade to a clear glass bulb and see a little better!!!!!

The gage on the HID harness is thicker than that on the stock halogen harness. I'll make sure I keep an eye out for any electrical damage, thanks

Maybe your 2000 has the 3 position, but 97-98 doesn't have it. My 97' Touring had every option on it Infiniti offered in 97' and no position change.

I also have had amazingly good luck with the Platinum Silverstars, over 7 years and still bright and clear. I run PIAA's on my 300ZX which last 1/2 the life if your lucky. I am sure Qship has something agains PIAA too...

The 98' isn't pre-wired for Xenon so you will need to upgrade that for wiring configuation.

Thanks! I get it now.
Don't quite understand the post about " it's a waste of time and money". Since you are using a lamp designed for hid, then your ahead. I was left w/ the(wrong) impression.

as a side note, I use an HIR bulb for my high beam on my F50 http://hirheadlights.com/index.htm
here is the link.
One thing I have learned. above the base a Halogen is a halogen. same w/ hid. I don't want to get in to an aurguement on the various kelvars and also the different quality of each manufacturer.

Each manufacture decides what base(type of plug) the want to use.
THere are adaptor harnesses the will allow a d2r in a d2s etc.

Of course the 1997 did not have the 3 position switch, as HID was not even offered then on USA bound Q.
You obviously still dont get it as far as bulbs go,and have either not read, or if read, understand, the information I laid in your lap.Piaa and Sylvania silverstars are both garbage.read the link I provided you if you care to learn the truth, or continue to just choose to believe in fairytales and blame me for trying to educate you. PS,I too once believed in the marketing, and used both Piaa and silverstars {search my old posts if you need confirmation} before I learned the truth.{and unfortunately still have some gimmicky Piaa all weather bulbs in my foglamps that I never turn on}.....matter of fact,I sent Brian{NO CHARGE} a 1 week old pair of Silverstar Ultras that I was unhappy with that I had just paid $50 for.....they were THAT bad compared to a true high quality bulb.

for those still thinking the silverstars are "brighter" than standard bulbs, here is a link to Sylvanias own web page showing THEIR OWN DATA, showing they are not.BOTH are rated at 910 lumens on low, 1500 lumens on high, and here is the tricky part to find- in order for the silverstars to even produce the same light output through that blue filtered glass is to overdrive the filament which is why the rated life goes way down to only 150 hours, instead of nearly 800 hours{but notice they do not list the expected hours on the silverstar page, but do on the standard page.....they do not want you to see this, but if you really dig around on their website, you CAN find it,I did} Any questions?

silerstar 9003 bulb that the Q takes http://www.sylvania.com/ConsumerProduct ... rProducts/

And Sylvanias "regular,plain jane 9003" is listed here http://www.sylvania.com/ConsumerProduct ... nProducts/

Jeez guys, we're all on the same team. Remember, context is sometimes difficult to interpret via text. We all get huffy from time to time, so let's cut each other some slack. Everyone here has something valuable to contribute, and we all have (and are entitled to) our own opinions.

In the words of Rodney King, "Can't we all just get along?"

So, what you are really mad about is that you were presented with documentation and facts that proved you wrong, and now your ego is bruised??? I am sorry if i hurt you. Is just lightbulbs, not your manhood.

Like Lokim stated.....we are entitled to form our own opinions.....but not to make up our own facts

Again, sorry if I hurt you.......

Your just not adding value, clearly we're all just tired of you being in here bad-mouthing everything not first generation Q45. This is a forum for all of us, not just 90-96 Q's. You had your day, you even stated in one post that the M56 isn't up the your 96' Q45. That is just laughable, the is so much more than any Q45 was that it isn't even in the same boat.

Just keep on point with the threads and stop being so combative to everyone. If you think 2nd or 3rd Gen Q's are Camry's and Accords as you've told me, fine, you have your opinion. Just stay out of these posts.

Nuff said, you do not need reply to this, we'll just agree to disagree.

sorry, but there is just too much non-factual in your above quote to let go and have others believe that by my silence, I agree with.Let me make some corrections to those points.

1.This is a thread about lighting, certainly my input "was on track" -presenting the truth about tinted glass bulbs {silverstars and others} WHICH IS WHERE I JUMPED IN,after seeing you recommend them , adds TREMENDOUS VALUE to anyone who values better illumination, and a fair return on their substantial investment in quality bulbs. not only my opinion, but I added VALUABLE links to back up my facts, both from their manufacturer and one of the leading automotive lighting engineers in the world {daniel stern} Did you take the time to read them? hopefully others did and learned something valuable. I believe it was actually you who initially turned the conversation negative and personal after I disagreed with your silverstar recommendation and provided these facts .....easy enough to go back and look through this thread,no? dont try to cloud the issue by bringing in gen 1, gen 2 Q model debates, m56 arguments,etc.....this thread is about lighting.

2.. I never said 2nd gen Q were "Camrys or Accords" nor that "the m56 isnt up to my 96q" ....you CLEARLY mis-interpreted what I wrote,go back and re-read it again. If after rereading, you dont feel differently, feel free to pm me and lets keep it from cluttering the general thread.

3. I take offense for you to tell me which threads I should "stay out of", if you do not like my posts, or I do not care for yours......so be it, certainly I do not care for some of your posts either.....but I am not so pompous to tell you to to stay out of threads

Motor on.
