Hey Anand, can you give the name of one of the Cali BAR places that do the test? I'm in the SoCal area also - I'll try to do a search for a place like that myself too. I want to do that w/ my Trust exhaust. It's not that loud in the first place and cops haven't pulled me over for it yet, but I want to shut my gf's neighbors up about my exhaust being "too loud bla bla."

back to the subject:

In Cali, I believe there is no longer a set dB level for the cop to write you a ticket. It's up to him to "judge": http://www.chp.ca.gov/html/streetlegal.html - so this may be for other states also

Also, when exhausts are mentioned as 50 state legal, that has nothing to do with emissions, and exhausts don't usually affect emissions anyway from what I remember. The exhaust itself will be under 95db as 50 state legal, but that doesn't cover anything about headers + intakes, etc.

But yes, fight it, fight it with all your might. From what I've learned from other members on this board, one idea is instead of fighting for many minutes and hours with the cop up front, just be polite and take his sh*t. If you fight him then, things could just get worse and he can just write even more bullsh*t tickets. Then get all your stuff together (paperwork, etc) and take it to court.

Court date isn't until mid feb. 05. I definitely have enough time to prepare for this.....

hi flow cat (if it has an eo #) is legal.

hotshot header, if you look at their website, you will see that "all hotshot performance products are intended for offroad use only."

I believe you need an EO # for headers, but not for exhausts (only noise).

Also, even if the exhaust is "50 state legal" noise wise, the header and hi-flow cat will increase the noise (since it's not accounted for) and probably put it above 95db if it was pretty close by itself.

I have intake, hotshot header, magnaflow hi flow cat (2.5"), trust sp (2.5") and it's pretty loud (low tone subwoofer like roaring) but I have not been pulled over for anything yet around LA and OC.

I am planning on doing what Anand did and get a Cali BAR approval.

Have had mine over 2 yrs now.. no problems with cops... (some clearance problems from time to time - dont put 5 ppl in the car at once)

but as far as rust.. the canister is fine.. its the support rods (which i have already sanded and painted over) and the back of the canister which rust. get under the car and check.. perhaps its not rusted yet but its starting to. i dunno.. point being is that Apexi sucks for not making the whole canister stainless steel..

Never get them any hint as to whether or not you're gonna contest a ticket- that just gives them time to prepare, and they've got nothing better to do while on the job, so they will.I've seen in court the judge tell people to come back for modified exhausts and then ask them "have you fixed this yet?" and if so they reduce the fines. Which still sucks.. So be sure to ask what exactly the ticket's for (noise level, emissions etc) but they probably won't answer any questions like that (unless you get a cool judge) until the actual trial- from my experience "the only thing they want to hear at this point is guilt, not guilty or no contest". Man I hate courts! Please keep us updated on everything.

This sucks dude. I've gotten some **** for my exhaust before. The cop rode next to me on the highway and listened and looked and then dropped behind me and then pulled my a$$ over.

I wasn't even in my own state!!! (live in GA, was in VA)

Only 1 way to find out .

Well, in my experience and from what I've read, exhausts will sound significantly louder w/ header & hi-flow cat as opposed to w/o. The"annoyingness" level varies from person to person.

I went straight from stock exhaust system -> header, cat, exhaust, so I can't tell you the diff of the header sound. However, I know for the first 2 weeks, my ears were bangin from the loudness of my exhaust system, after a while, I got used to it .

The safest bet would be to do what Anand did and get it tested for noise pollution as well as emissions from a certified station. I'm still trying to figure out where I can find one in SoCal.

police can tell you whatever the hell they want when they pull you over, even if it's completely and utterly incorrect (the sky is brown!); there was a discussion about that on freshalloy a couple months ago. (look for mav's 2 exhaust ticket thread)

also, anything pre-cat (including the cat itself) needs to have a carb executive order to be legal in california.

also, for those of you who want to get tested at a bar referee station for exhaust loudness, they only allow people who have been ticketed for excessive exhaust noise be tested. you can't preempt the ticket by first getting certification that your exhaust is noise-legal, which, i think, is too bad.
