I thibk I have sort of the same problem. My comp crashes at least once a day, but it only started happening a few weeks ago when I got a different internet connection. It gets really annoying whenever I am typing something and it crashes for no reason.

you need to go to windows update through your control panel maybe it will fix the problem, if not your files are either corrupt or missing. Also if im not mistakin you are able to connect to website using windows media player, intervideo, and a few others.

try to remember what you last did before it stopped working... I don't think anybody is going to be able to help you with the info you gave. It's like me saying "my car randomly stops working sometimes, I drive a sedan, but I don't know the make, model, or year, and I think its a problem with the engine. How do I fix it?"

Were you messing with your registry or randomly deleting files? Any more info you can give us would help us to help you.

your internet is unstable then, hopefully you have dsl or cable. if you do go to control panel then to internet settings, click on setup and follow the steps.

If explorer is crashing, then something in Win32 is FUBAR. Best to just reformat. I had the same problem when I got too zealous with my registry cleaner. Sorry man.

Yes you can... Theres also a program.. which i'll find for you that will actually uninstall InternetExplorer.exe and let you reinstall it with a new IE6 so your able to repair any files that are currupted.. also... Yes installing a printer does affect Explorer because your webbrowser and your desktop all run off the same interface.... as for the windows media player deal... That runs off of internet explorer so you're going to get the same results with it crashing. I'll find that program for you and get back to you on it

Also... if you want to save everything move it to the second drive. If you do a format you would format your primary drive. Where the OS (operating system is) if you have your xp disc you are able to install a copy over an existing OS and be able to repiar any currupted files as well as being able to save any settings you have done to your computer so you don't have to go through the whole process all over again.

A little more elaboration please.. does setup complete? If it does. just take out the Windows CD and see if it boots normally. If not, error? or does it just throwup all over itself and die? or even better does it just reboot with no anything? Details man. And don't worry. short of you having wrecked hardware, we will get you through this. Also, please please please tell me this is not Windows XP Home Edition..

go to bootdisk.com (bootdisks.com maybe) get the windows 98 se boot disk. Put it in, at the prompt type format c:. Then press y. Then when its done, pull that disk out and put in the windows cd, go through the whole setup and ur golden.

im running xp pro. setup does not complete. it does the same thing when the xp cd isnt in the drive when i startup. it goes to a screen where it says choose " windows xp professional, or windows xp professional setup" if you try the normally boot it up it just reboots in a few seconds. if you try the setup, itll get into the setup screen (blue) and then reboots.

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this question, but I'll ask anyway; you didn't do any overclocking or anything of the sort? If you have memory instability while trying to copy setup files, you're going to get strange behavior. My suggestion is go into the bios and reset to defaults. That should set it down to safe settings. Another thing you can do is go download this memory tester (which is free and quite useful, by the way) and check to ensure your memory is still good. Another thing you can do to be real sure bad hardware is not getting in the way is to pull out unnessecary components such as the sound and network card from the computer. Also make sure any and all USB devices are disconnected. That's all I can think of at the moment.. my ideas are a bit more extreme as far as troubleshooting, maybe someone else can throw out something a little simpler to begin with.

Edit: Also, did setup get anywhere before? I mean, I thought you were at least able to boot into Windows before. Did the condition degrade on it's own or did setup get somewhere once, crash, and never worked again?

Also a good idea.. actually a better idea to start off with.

Yeah, it will clear EVERYTHING out and start from scratch. If this doesnt work either you xp cd is bad or you have conflicting/bad hardware.

I understand what you're thinking, but no, if you set it to defaults it will only change settings, not anything as far as revision. However if your friend was messing around with it you may want to ask him for some help on this. If he had to set anything special in the bios to make Windows XP work (nothing comes to mind right away as to what you may have to change, but I don't usually install Windows XP on 5 year old computers.... besides mine) then those settings would have to be re-set after you defaulted it. I would just stick with the suggestion of downloading and creating a boot disk for now since that's A) Easy B) relatively safe and C) Has the least chance of envoking nuclear meltdown. Let us know how that goes and we can go from there.
