Thanks for the explanation. I asked originally because I've got a single cylinder 2-stroke Yamaha ATV engine that I want to have bored and ported. The company that I think I'm going to use said something about matching the head to the new bore... and that most places just bore the cylinder and don't touch the head. I guess he wasn't just blowing smoke up my a$$!

He also has some kind of unique pattern that he grinds into the inside of the head. It looks almost like a boat propeller carved into it, centered around the business end of the plug. Supposedly this creates a much more efficient exhaust charge... which is especially important on a 2-stroke engine. Any idea if that's total BS or if it would make sense?

Rebuilding an engine to perform takes more than gaskets and an overhaul set. It takes time and lots of measuring.

This is very true. I'm no professional mechanic by any stretch of the imagination... but I've seen some hack-job rebuilds that didn't last very long and didn't perform very well to begin with.

My uncle is the guy I go to for 2 stroke info, he used to race speed boats. What I've gathered fro him is that the shape of the ports, combustion chamber, even the top of the piston is much more important on a 2 stroke vs a 4 stroke. He said in the 60's you would build a 2 stroke, run it hard and then pull it apart to check how evenly the carbon was deposited on all of the surfaces, then change the shape of something and start all over again.

He was USA-1 in his class, I think that's what he said.

This is pretty much why I'm going with the most expensive guy I've found. His shop has been doing this stuff for 30+ years, starting with his dad. He's built engines for a number of the big name moto-x and super-x racers. I've shot a couple emails back and forth with him and he certainly seems to know his stuff. I just like to get a few opinions in mind before I start handing over hundreds of dollars and a perfectly good cylinder and head!! :D

I'm a huge fan of 2-stroke performance when it comes to quads and bikes... but they are a wicked sensitive platform to start with. They are also not as reliable... but man can they ever put out some low-end horsepower real quickly!!

Your uncle sounds like a good guy to have in your corner...

it was a slightly silly question to begin with... why is the sky blue? that's just how things are

The sky is purple, it's just that our eyes are too retarded to see that shade, so we see blue. :D
