wow i want to add on to this thread

My father was a v8 kinda guy, till he got his first real import (he had owned a few datsun 280z turbo), well maybe not just domestic, just mainly domestic guy. He was big onto euros too, But he had got his hands on a supra TT. Then over the years he had two z32 TT, a FD, and now he's got a s2k Turbo.

After a few years he started an import shop, At the time it was all honda, a couple of mitsu's here and there, but mainly honda.

Well by 2002, in about a year, I had owned a lot of cars, but mainly it was because we'd fix them up and sell them, so yeah I was assed out on a lot of cars, by then we still hadn't done a nissan. It was 04 by then, my dad got me to buy a 96 s14.

He wanted me to go RWD, because I had never had one, so after a few weeks of searching (and looking in neighboring towns and cities) we found one here in Killeen.

I got it on prom night (oh yeah prom dinner as a senior with your GF at Jack in the crack).

Then I hooked up with a few guys and they told me to go SR, but I had no money, and couldn't find a good deal on SR's.

KA-T.

In the first half of 05, I made 421 RWHP and 411 ft-lbs. I had been through three ka's by now. One built, and two stock.

By the last half of 05 I was on my fourth and a half motor, this time nothing was skipped, fully built with the exceptions of rods.

Just recently (about two weeks ago) my friend hit my car, my 14 totals out, and I have a vert now KA-T five speed.

I like nissan because they have raw amounts of torque (unlike most hondas). Simply designed on looks, but decent design on motors. Honestly my s14 did not look superb or anything, just plain looking, unlike my honda's. It seems like honda makes up for the motor by adding looks, or lil tid bits of designe in the interior. Nissan just makes a decent body, and throws a nice motor in it.

I like my vert (but not as much as my 14) because it looks funny. and it's hard to see the FMIC on it. Lol

I have been a Datsun man my whole life. I grew up with my dad telling me stories about how he used to race his 510, 1200, and Roadster and just blow people away...while at the same time getting good gas mileage and being a blast to drive. When I was born my parents drove a Datsun STATION WAGON and my dad owned two 1970 1600 Roadsters which we used to play in all the time. When I was 4 we moved to Japan and took our Roadster with us. My dad bought a 1978 Sunny GX Coupe complete with dual SU's and all. I remember us driving back from Mt. Fuji on the expressway at speeds well over 100mph in that car (cause at the time I was scared he was going so fast!). Our family became friends with a Mr. Suzuki through a foreign exchange program, he was a very wealthy Japanese man and president of a sports car club out there, also a Datsun fanatic very much into racing/restoring. When we left Japan, we left our Roadster with him to be repainted/restored, which he did meticulously, but we ended up selling it to him cause my parents couldn't afford to ship it back at the time for some reason. Besides, my dad could still have fun in the near-new 280ZX (S-130) he bought while over there and shipped back with us. LOTS of memories associated with the 280ZX. All of my brothers and myself pretty much learned to drive stick in that car, it was my dad's daily driver from ~1984 to 1998 when we sold it to one of our best friends, who now is selling it BACK to my brother this summer! Anyways, in high school (1995) my dad got the chance to buy another 1200 (B110), so that became his new 'toy' and daily driver. We helped him tear it down, rebuild the engine, and turn it into a pretty quick and fun little car...I learned nearly all my mechanical/car stuff working on these cars. He bought another TWO 1200's as parts donors which I was given one to fix up and drive my senior year. I drove one of them well into college, and restored the other one in the mean time. Shortly after junking the first one and finishing the second one, I wrecked the newly restored one. Instead of moving on, I quickly found another one and trasferred all my 'goodies' to the rusted out one I got for $200. I drove, broke, fixed, got stranded, and loved/hated that car all the way through college, and bought a Primo condition one for my graduation present, thus sellin the rust bucket for $400 more than I bought it for. I still have the one I bought at graduation, and am getting ready to restore it all the way maybe next year. Currently it's just about the fastest car in town and my pride and joy (NOT the 240SX!). Anyways, back to the story, my brother started telling me about Silvia's back in high school and how you could get a well balanced RWD turbo car nearly comparable to the Skyline for half the price! I kept that in mind until after college when my brother moved back to Japan and bought a 180SX and told me about how much of a well balanced car it was. When I moved to Japan a year later with my Datsun, I had plans to install an SR20 out of a 180SX into my 1200. So I found a guy with a 180SX that had been trashed on the outside, but had LOW miles on it and otherwise was perfect. I bought it for $1000 and it became my daily driver because I loved driving it so much. I finally decided I'd find another one to 'drive' so I could do the engine swap with the current one and picked up a perfect red 180SX for $1200. I fixed that one up REALLY good and did lots of touge/mountain racing with it up in Okutama and the surrounding area while I did the engine swap on the Datsun. I eventually got into a bad wreck in the 180SX and pulled all my goodies off of it. Besides, I finished my Datsun and had to move anyway, so when I came back to the US I now had all these S13 parts, a love for convertibles, and no daily driver. Naturally I went on the lookout for a nice convertible which I found in Houston for $3000 with nothing wrong with it. Towed it home, threw my parts on, and swapped the engine all within 5 months and I LOVE it. It's taken some of the love away from my Datsun unfortunately, but I'll get to that car soon enough. Nothing has come close to cruising with the big Texas sky overhead, tunes blaring, and blow off valve and exhaust singing away in sweet melody. I love Nissans because they are VERY interchangeable, designed really really well, and I've been with them my whole life.

I was looking for a convertible to replace my Infiniti M30 convertible which I sold when I bought my Pathfinder. Stupid move. The Infiniti was paid for and still in good condition. I wanted a convertible that had decent performance and my kids demanded a back seat. Yeah, I'm older than most of you folks so I had to consider the kids when making my decision.

My family's always been into cars. My dad had a TR3 as his first car, then a Datsun 1600, then a Jag, then a pair of Aston Martin DB6s when we lived in England. My brother owns a Datsun 2000 and I had to get my convertible back. I looked everywhere and found mine on eBay in Mesa AZ and had it shipped to NC. I'd never even driven one.

It drives great, always turns heads, I've been asked to sell it by total strangers and wouldn't dream of it now. I'm taking this one to my grave.

Now to swap the engine and transmission or not. I just built a house and am tapped out for a while but am saving my pennies to make the performance move. But I have to admit it's perfect just like it is. Great forum.

Man, listening to everyone's responses..... makes me feel...well..OLD.. I started out with a good friend's dad who worked at Bob Sharp Datsun back in the 70's and 80's. We used to go watch the 240Z.. then 260Z..some 510's.. at the race track (Lime Rock CT) When I got my first car I wanted a convertible of any sort.. First vehicle was a 72' Blazer K5 (living in CT 4wd in winter was a must)... bought in back in 83'.. in college I had a 74' Blazer K5 (full hardtop removable as was 72)... traded that for a Fiat 124 Spyder (Fiat does really stand for Fix It Again Today)... when running was very much like the 240 Vert.. small nimble 1.8 DOHC and convertible.. went through a 94 Chevy 1500 SS then a 95 Chevy 1500 Ext Cab.. Then came the 97 Wrangler (really 96, but no 96 model year made)... learned a valuable lesson ... I HATE MANUAL TOPS.. lol... Sold Jeep and made enough profit to buy 93 Nissan 240 SX SE (in 99 for $7900 - a steal with only 78K).. I had a 86 Sentra as a winter beater and got to enjoy a timing belt breaking at 60mph.. everyone knows how much clearance Nissan's have between the valves and pistons...ZERO.. gave that car away... I was a little hesitant buying the 240, but one drive down the highway with the top down at 120 changed that.. the car was so smooth and fun to drive even in that form.... wife and kids loved cruising with top down... In 2001 transmission crapped out.... not sure if anyone was doing swaps yet, but east coast had never heard of such a thing... paid to have transmission rebult and discovered the wonderful marbles in can sound... car sat parked from 2001 until 2005 (occasional start ups etc), by this time we moved 4 times ATL to Charleston SC... finally got money saved to have motor looked at and found warped head and bad timing chain.. had head machined and had motor put back together.. (even more money.. don't ask me why wife hasn't killed me yet).. engine still makes noise.. transmission started typical problem (stuck in first gear at times .. not just a cold problem to everyone who thinks so..), but discovered NICO in process and have since purchased SR20DET and 5-speed .. Silvia body panels (triple projectors and GTR grille)... and as some may know I am in process of doing whole thing before NOPI in Sept.. Body panels at fit.. motor is being checked (155 across all cylinders.. turbo has zero end play.. looks like motor was set up a bit .. ogura single disc racing clutch and looks like rocker arm stoppers installed already)... Back to inital question.. why?.. it has been a process.. but the love of the car with the top down.. and now as car becomes more rare.. the stares.. (esp with the Silvia Front).. Nissan truely makes a great product.. and fun even with the casterated USDM set up... things can only go up from here.. anyone thinking about it.. just take a ride in a Vert and drift in a set up one and let me know how long it takes before you to start your journey... That's my story and I'm stickin to it..

the s14 hinges will work. you just have to line the front hole up with the rear hinge hole. I had a chance to get some s15 hood hinges but they are rediculously expensive. like 120 total i think. when I got the s14 hinges for like 40 shipped. And they work just fine offset that way. The two other people I contacted about the s15 conversion said the same thing.
