'cause it's the JDM hotness. Here in the states (especially where I live) it's just cool to have something that the car came with in it's birth country, and its still kinda rare. It's kinda like a hot foreign exchange student that just came to your school.

Seriously, it's a damn good engine and has great bang for the buck factor. It's gotten popular so there is tons of support and hardware for it. Dude it's turbo! We didn't get the turbo Silvia here. We got the NA 2.4 and everybody knows turbo is better.

its more of a bandwagon thing.

A couple years ago, it was thought that the stock KA24DE motor was usless. SR20DET was turboed from the factory so it just became popular as an after market swap. Little did we know turbo charged KA24DEs are just as potent, if not more.

its a very easy to work with motor, parts are easy to get, after market and stock ,new and used, theres enough information on the internet about it to the point you could almost freshly cast your own complete motor (jk) . they arent expensive and is an all around a good platform.

the SR has nearly a decade of aftermarket support, and all the R&D into these parts ensures quality, and the market spans all over the world.

it also runs like a factory motor (because it is) the moment its started. unlike a ka-t setup that needs to be tuned, or tweaked to make it run clean.

I just liked the idea of having a car with a motor swap. I had been looking into getting a SR 240 for a while before I actually got one. Luckly I got mine just in time to be called a bandwagoner! Hurray! lol

Not that it matters or influenced me to get a SR but I always thought the SR engine looks prettier then the KA, RB or CA. lol

Just take a ride in an SR powered 240 that has been done right. All the questions melt away. Ive been in some really fast cars but the small nimble go cart feeling of the 240 with tight suspension mixed with the snappiness of the SR running the right turbo and the right boost... it just makes for good times, over and above even cars like porches

The motor is just insane. Holds crazy amounts of power. Makes power very easy. Best Potential to Price IMO. I want another.

well its sexy, parts are easy to find. turbo from factory, that means the ecu will retard timing under boost from factory. I think its a better platform to start with, the list just goes on and on.

no one's mentioning some key factors...

it's around 100 lbs lighter off the front and gives the car almost perfect weight distribution

crazy throttle response

bottom end can take around 400whp reliably

Sexy Baritone instead of the nasty shrill high pitched whine of most 2.0 liters

The main deciding factor for me over Ka-T was reliability. Sure if tuned right the Ka-T can be reliable, but the SR is a factory turbocharged motor, you can't get much more reliable than that. You can call me a bandwagoner if you want, but the simple fact that it's a direct swap, has huge capability in semi stock form, and needs no tuning to get it running right makes it the best bang for the buck decision...

+10 for support! I learned the hard way in high school. Only kid to own an EVO I, everyone else owned 180s, skylines, tourer v's, and family cars. So when i had car problems i didnt have anyone to go to........

The SR20 is pretty indestructible too. I love mine to death. It is pretty intangible really. I love being able to push 400whp reliably with only minor bolt ons is pretty damn cool. And the parts being cheap and all that jazz is pretty appealing.

Like a lot of people said. Reliability, nice power, and smooth revving engine. Just take one drive in a 240 with a Sr20 and that'll answer your question.

Who gave you that price? I'd never pay that much for an SR20.

3000 is hella high for just the motor. But back on topic its a great motor I don't care what any KA-T guy says "more tourqe blah blah blah" KA is an awesome engine just not made for the snail. There's a reason why people do the swap. O and if its such a bandwagon swap why don't I see people swapping in KA-Ts in 510's,350Z's,AE86's etc...?????? That's what I thought there is no good answer cuz when you swap an engine you want RELIABLE HP not a ticking piston scouring, rod bearing bomb quote that on ur Myspace and KA-T fanboy forum. 1

Like everyone else said: bang for buck. Sure a KA-T is a cool thing but the turbo kit alone will cost you around the same as an SR swap and our KA's are usually really high miles. I know when I yanked my KA it had well over 150k and it was much cheaper for me just to swap it out with an SR. SR's are reasonably cheap, parts are readily available and they make a cool WHOOSH!!! noise if you put on a bov which is always a head turner. Beats the **** outta drivin a honda.

Just saying the name "SR20DET" gives you goose bumps!!! just looking at it wil let your hair stand up. and most but not least telling others you have a SR20DET that runs 11's or or 10's like i'm going to do just freaks everybody out. they will bow down before you

i like the s14 sr20det for its vtc, long intake runners, and a shorter stroke than the KA.

Also, I don't have to worry about OBD2 crap. (I have a 98 240sx)

(and I am meeting the benifits of the KA in the middle by boring my sr20 to 2.2L and surpassing the KA by having a bottom and top end that can rev to 9k)
