The SR has a fully counterweighted crank.

It's a very smooth revving motor. Also looks prettier than the KA. I also had tons of problems with my KA's(owned 3 different 240's over the past 4 and a half years). This SR has been trouble free for a year and counting.

It's lighter than the KA and it fits nicely in my truck.

It's a great engine, it's lighter than the ka, and there is plenty of aftermarket support for it. However If I had my project to do over again, I would have just rebuilt the dohc ka and turboed it. I would have had a brand new (rebuilt) engine instead of a used one with 35xxx miles on it, no wiring issues and the KA24 makes quite a bit more torque. The sr seems like it's more of a jdm bandwagon thing right now.

I bought an '89 with a blown KA for $700, a Silvia clip for $3100, and after I played Frankenstein and sold off the leftovers I spent about $3000 to have a car that gives my M3 a run for it's money, and that's just the start.

I dont want to like them but i do.

they are a good base for a moderate powerd n/a build

they need a bit of work to be reliable but are very easy to find in australia.

for example if i wanted to build an n/a honda i would have a hard time finding the gear to modify it in austaralia.

This is the rear drive turbo forum so he is probably talking about the SR20DET but that is also a really good reason for the NA form.

I dont know about cheap. Im about 10,000.00 into my swap so far and the otside is still completely stock. I first drove a 240 with an all stock redtop sr swap and it was nice, but my second drive of an sr was a completely upgraded blacktop with all the bells and whistles and there is absolutely no comparison between the two. I originally intended to spend 4-5000 tops, but like everyone has said so far this engine is so worth it. Its a beautiful thing when you pull up to an 07 sti or evo and leave them stupified with your $12,000 hotrod.

I dunno what you are doing but 10,000 on a swap? Maybe you should send your 240 straight to JUN Automechanic? You'd probably save some money LOL.

i seem to found a major positive to the sr...i'm not sure if it's just the particular sr i have (98 type x s13 blacktop) but the sr refused to be overheated...it plain and simply wouldn't let me....

i had a coolant leak somewhere and there wouldn't be enough coolant to cool off the engine...when this would happen the engine would immediately refuse to rev over 2000 rpm and force me to crawl around at 40mph...

i don't understand how people blow these motors - they must just floor them constantly, bouncing them off the rev limiters or something

I was tired of driving my KA and when the valves bent, I couldn't resist the urge of a low mileage, factory turbo motor. Besides, wouldnt Nissan have put a KA in the Silvias if they were better? You don't see people importing KA's to japan for the torque factor.

Same here, but I have done a little outside work though.

I personally love the SR because it is an amazing engine that is designed to work with a turbo right out of the factory. There is an infinite supply of after market parts for the engine which has resulted in a phenomenal amount of R&D being invested in the engine and said parts. Furthermore its still a 'rareish' swap. I am the only sileighty in my town and there is about 100k people here.

The SR is the absolute best cost to HP/performance ratio. That is if you know what you're doing and do the work yourself and don't pay retail prices for parts. For some people they don't have a clue and they have others do the work for them and they end up spending twice as much as it should cost.

One of my friends has a 88 firebird with a corvette v8, both our cas are fast but he only get about 18mpg and I get 25. I'm sure my engine will last longer too.

Because the bottom end is forged from the factory. and the SR is not a pick up truck motor like the KA.

Because the SR20DET has good bottom end torque even off boost, and awesome power delivery on boost. And it's easy to get very streetable power even up to 400hp.. Mmmm... GT2871R

your absolutely right. Its been some trial and error. I dont want anybody new here thinking you can build a 400hp sr for 3000.00
