I voted yes, even though I'll most likely never use it, but it does seem like a good idea. I mean, of all the other forums I'm on, I've gotten like 1 PM in the past 2 years. Just seems kinda trivial to me. Also, I think that email is just as good. If we have the option to turn it off, I'll be happy.
The 240 community is a little more technically inclined than the altima and other sections... And because the 240s have so many articles and so many builds, there is a WEALTH of info already on the boards, hence not as many issues to email or ask meaningful questions about...

Whereas the altima for instance... discussing a CVT turbo, new model lines that have questions that have never been addressed etc... these are things that havent been discussed over and over before and if it goes PM instead of public, well then we have that question still unanswered for all those to follow.

LBC almost got there. IMO, I think those most likely to ask the technical questions via PM (rather than a forum post) or the newer members who fear ridicule for asking what they perceive to be a "dumb" question. Since they don't really know the community, they worry about the wrath they might encounter for posting. PMs are a solid tool, but if implemented there should be some instructions that posting technical questions should be placed for all to see.

I completely get the need for PMs in terms of classifieds or if I plan on meeting up with another member and we want to share email/phone numbers outside of the public domain. For that, this would be a huge benefit.

I don't know anyone who does that. If you need help with your car, you post a question to reach a wide audience. You don't send a PM just to one person because who wants to type up a big ole question when only one person is going to see it?
Because people are shy... you are from the 240 tech heavy area, whereas a 40yo woman who is interested in why her TPMS isnt working right doesnt want to sign up for nico, they will just email me or another staffer...

Id invite you to take a look at my mailbox, but then id have to sick Nala on you!

LOL

I'm from the 240 tech heavy area? I don't even like 240s much less hang out in the 240 sections.

The funny thing is that a 40 year old lady can't PM someone unless she signs up for a forum so email is their usual only option if they don't want to join.

PSSSSH. Like that's going to keep me out of your bushes. You really need to trim them btw. In general, your lawn care is lacking.

Jesda I'm sure if you were in Delaware you wouldn't be stalking Sky, more than likely you'd be to excited to visit the Screen Door Factory...

Actually once you got into her neck of the woods you'd be to concerned about looking over your shoulder as I'm sure the rednecks, KKK, and neo-nazi's would be chasing after you. After all they don't much like you brown people... J/K.

I dont know what sections your frequent, but if you look in the altima section, you can understand the situation better to some extent.

I think AppleBonker and I have hit the nail on the head here, but the question still remains... It is better for forum knowledge without PM, but its better for classifieds and meets pm's may be helpful...

I don't really visit any of the car-specific forums anymore. Q45 section kind of turned into a shady neighborhood.

I don't think I've owned a Nissan product in four years.

I still think that the community here on NICO wouldn't be what it is today if PMs were here. We know everyone through our public posts and because of the chats, it leaves us open to people viewing how we think and leaves us open to gaining more friends, more than enemies.

Noobs have to be broken of their shyness sooner or later, otherwise they'll never learn or experiment, leading to a faction of dull and boring lemmings who are 'tards like Nala.

I'm probably scared that PMs will induce the FORMUS into a more private community.
Could not agree more. I vote no. No reason to fix something that isnt broken.

This forum is unique as PM'less, if you have something to ask/tell it's best to man up and share with the rest of public.

Those who hide their emails are pansies. The last 3 years I been a nico member and fully exposed email. I never have received spam or unwanted emails.

No.

I will admit to being a bit biased though. On the BMW forums I often see references to PM's between members concerning technical stuff they didn't want to post for everyone and it's rather annoying.

IMO that defeats the purpose of being on a forum and if people want to do that they can use a less public form of communication like e-mail.

I also never understood why people would say to PM them for info. Inevitably they end up with a ton of PM's. It would have been easier/better to post it in the open.

It's not even that useful for the classifieds. Web based e-mail is free so if you're worried about getting spammed to death just start one specifically for buying/selling.

i keep my e-mail public for anyone to see and utilize. while i admit that i'm nowhere near the wealth of knowledge that most others are, i do welcome anyone to e-mail me for any assistance that i can provide. since my e-mails go directly to my phone, i usually respond right away. with pm's i'd have to find a computer to log onto nico to respond, and if i'm in a car or at someone else's house, it might take a while. but, like i said, it doesn't really matter to me. i'll just keep on, keeping on like i have been.

Might as well change the forum software to IPB then.

Honestly simplicity is sometimes best and in this case it is. More features the more possible problems...

It's a separate function.

"Report Post" is definitely being added, as well as a Moderator Audit function wih automated alerts.

you know ive been pushing you to add pm's for years greg. it would make our lives a lot easier. it would also cut down on the off topic banter in threads.

Even tho members always want more features in this case we shouldn;t do it because it will cripple the site.

As a generalist Nissan/Infiniti site you are too vulnerable to whisper campaigns from specialist sites that have only one model specialization.

Members form there can send PM's to your members in your subforums nasking them to come over etc etc.And before you know it your forum will be empty.

You cant see / control what goes on in PMs.

All it takes is a 1 active disgrunteld guy or a couple of determined guys from a speciality forum PMing invites/links.

Dont underestiamte the effect such targeted PM's can have.

Adding PM's, will allow other sites to mis-use Nico and its' look, its artciels as a simple portal to them. thats what it comes down to and as a all model site you will always be vulnerable to that.

No matter how hard you try no matter how good your articles are it <will> happen.

Even if you have a real strong sub forum.

And any attempts to appeal to folks better nature will backfire and make Moderators look weak or like a jack a$$.

One of the reasons for Nico's staying power in the face of competition is the absence of PMs which means Nico wont bleed traffic and members in this fashion.

And it can make all the difference. trust me I know from experience.

On Freshalloy we had a subforum that 4 yrs ago was the most active on the internet for that model and it all went away in less than 6 months.

And that was well BEFORE our self inflcted problems even started surfacing ( outages etc).

PM's are poison for a site with a multi-model set up.

I want Nico to stick around and remain relevant so PLEASE dont add PM's.

Never going to happen to the Q45 forum or the J30 forum. Plus as far as I know the only other forum that competes with NICO is Fresh Alloy But the Q section isn't as active as Nico's.
