We are getting the new server set up and I was wondering if you guys would like to have PMs. Please vote and let me know why you are for or against them.

Well, get everyone in here and get them to vote. I'm trying to convince Greg that we need them. All of the other forums have them, no reason why we shouldn't have them too.

Hate to be "That guy" but I have been used to no PMing. Now if members have there email addresses blocked it may help. You can always make a topic if you really need to talk to them, Or ask someone who know them there what there info is.

Plus this is a car forum no need for all the fancy do dads.

I say no. We've been getting along just fine without it. Everyone has an email address, use that like we have been.

I don't think not having PMs is what makes us unique. I have heard lots of people mention wanting them and referencing the fact that other sites offer them.
93coupe wrote:Everyone has an email address, use that like we have been.
That works IF people don't hide their e-mail.

Thanks for the feedback everyone and keep it coming. I don't have a horse in this race really, I have EVERYONE's e-mail. Some people had brought it up in the past so I thought I'd address it now while it would be easy to implement.

No. If there's a question that's needed, the it should be posted. They get annoying for repetitive questions to a member. If I can turn off the option for people I'm not friends with here on the boards, I guess it could work out. I just don't want people I don't know/care for/dislike PMing me. I have my email blocked for a reason. Mods/admins can access my email if they so choose.

KV is right on. I wont be opposed to having PMs, but I have a feeling I'll be responding to numerous messages that the question should be posted on the forums. I can't even count how many emails (before I blocked my address) I received that started with "you'll probably think this is stupid, but I'm a noob..." when it comes to car A/V. Then, the number of those emails that ask similar questions is astounding. I usually redirect them to the forums, because not too many members are alone in their questions (no matter how basic). If they are answered in the public space, the answer lives on far longer than the original poster/responder.

The only pro I see for having PMs is that newbies to this community might feel more comfortable here. If we want to use that to attract new members, go for it. The having to respond to PMs saying "post this on the boards" is an acceptable trade-off IMO.

I vote 'no.' We've been just fine without them, and because of that we have a had a wealth of information that gets recorded out in the open. Makes it easier to search. That, and we have email addresses, AIM's, MSN's, BBMs, texts, facebooks, myspaces, twitters, (and formsprings for members like Nala) that can accomplish the same thing. While I admit to not checking mine all that often, I do check email before I check PM's on the boards I belong to. Because, well, there are a lot of boards that I don't visit as frequently as I check my email. I could easily miss a question that someone needs an answer to ASAP.

Another point I'd like to make- some members aren't all that active anymore. Example- DeviousKA. Cool guy, helped me with some ITB building questions and megasquirt. Hardly ever checks this board anymore (since ~'05-'06, and even less before I found his handle) but was super easy to reach because his email was available. Its unlikely that I EVER would have heard from him if all I did/was able to do was to write a PM.

Its my understanding that this is a community, and within the community, everyone gets along with one another without segergating off into little groups, clics, etc. Its more fun to say "WTF SHEESH DAMN NALA IS DUMB AND HAS NO BALLS TO ASK A CHICK TO PROM" for everyone to see instead of telling each other in PM's how much of a wuss he is. Without these comments posted in a public manner, he may have missed out on excellent advice that was held up in PMs. Whether or not he uses it is another story, but I digress. I prefer the open information and if you really have something that needs to be said or communicated in private, email is perfectly fine. Even if it pertains to one person, starting a thread calling for their specific help doesn't hurt anyone because 1. they're more likely to see it on the main chat page2. others can chime in with a correct answer, possibly more quickly3. most of the time (another Nala related point) people will leave it alone if its specific, like when Nala asked kornmanz for a mixed up track.

In conclusion, no. No PM because they don't promote the sense of community and getting to know and meet one another like we all do now.

I voted yes for a number of reasons. Primarily it makes contacting a seller in the classifieds that much easier. A lot of the classified ads are repeated in other forums for a faster sale and aren't checked as frequently as they should be. Yeah you can email a person but not everyone checks their personal email frequently, or have an email listed in either there profile or in the classifieds ad.

Secondly if you are trying to conversate with some one via email it's just damned annoying, if I ask a question or say something I'd like to have an answer or comment back in a reasonable amount of time, not some time next week, PM's would allow this as most of us are on here anyways.

Finally, sometimes people need to talk to each other in private and not have to broadcast in the forums or send an email that might not be read in time (or at all), and PM's would give us the opportunity to do that.

Maybe everyone would be happy if you adopted a chat feature on top of having the PM's available.

I vote yes for them as long as this doesn't get to be one of the douche bag forums that every other post is "take it to PM" That crap is almost as annoying as the "repost" or "search" which sometimes is neccesary but usually just rude.
