Of course yes. There has never been a solid valid argument against PMs.

I never check my emails on a regular basis anyways and quite often, I want to send a quick note to someone that doesn't need to be made public.

If you don't want people to PM you about tech issues, put that into your siggy: "Tech questions sent to my PM box are ignored and deleted".

frapjap wrote:I vote 'no.' We've been just fine without them, That, and we have email addresses, AIM's, MSN's, BBMs, texts, facebooks, myspaces, twitters, (and formsprings for members like Nala)

Another point I'd like to make- some members aren't all that active anymore.

Its my understanding that this is a community, and within the community, everyone gets along with one another without segergating off into little groups, clics, etc. Its more fun to say "WTF SHEESH DAMN NALA IS DUMB AND HAS NO BALLS TO ASK A CHICK TO PROM" for everyone to see instead of telling each other in PM's how much of a wuss he is.

1. they're more likely to see it on the main chat page2. others can chime in with a correct answer, possibly more quickly3. most of the time (another Nala related point) people will leave it alone if its specific, like when Nala asked kornmanz for a mixed up track.

In conclusion, no. No PM because they don't promote the sense of community and getting to know and meet one another like we all do now.
Right, we have been fine with out them. We have been ok with out them. NICO shouldn't be "OK" or "fine" it deserves to be awesome. Having PMs just puts us at common ground with every other forum on the web. We just caught up with the rest of the world. Great!

I don't have AIM, MSN, BBM, facebook, myspace or twitter. To be quite frank, I wouldn't like it if NICO members cluttered up my email mail box and I do not expect any texts going out either. Some members block their Email for this reason exactly. But with a PM they could contact me all they want. Also I don't know some people's names that live on NICO so if I get a facebook message from James Phillips, I would be put in an awkward position to ask him who he is on NICO. But a PM from Mr1der and yep I got it.

No one would feel the need to talk smack about some one on NICO through PM haha. It wouldn't happen through email either. People wouldn't waste their time. How many E-thugs are out there? None of them hide because the consequences are insignificant.

Also all your points revolve around Nala, and so we shouldn't have PMs because of him? Yeah how about we get PMs and get rid of Nala? Most of the time you see random threads like "Contacting SO-AND-SO", after clicking you read "send me an email", only Nala does things like what you mentioned.

In conclusion, whether or not we have PMs, we will still be a community and we will still meet and get to know each other. Raise your hand if your not going to Carlisle because NICO finally got PMs?

i think some of you guys arent thinking of it the same way i am. certain questions should be posted for all to see, but sometimes the question is strictly between 2 people or as mentioned, for use in the classifieds. you just have to know when to post and when to pm

Agreed.

I vote No but whatever.

I think it could decrease the amount of traffic General Chat gets. It could also possibly hurt the Learned'd. I like the way everything is pubic now.

IMO it would make things boring. The way it's set up now, if someone has a question, we can all contribute. You're more likely to get a correct answer if you're asking more people.

If you want a private conversation with someone, we have e-mail addresses and instant messengers.

If you decide to get PMs, just give us options for it.

Receive PMs from everybodyReceive PMs from only people you knowDo NOT receive PMs from anybody but staffDo NOT receive PMs from anybody

I still think that the community here on NICO wouldn't be what it is today if PMs were here. We know everyone through our public posts and because of the chats, it leaves us open to people viewing how we think and leaves us open to gaining more friends, more than enemies.

Noobs have to be broken of their shyness sooner or later, otherwise they'll never learn or experiment, leading to a faction of dull and boring lemmings who are 'tards like Nala.

I'm probably scared that PMs will induce the FORMUS into a more private community.

DOWN WITH THE PMs( )!!!

New page! Yay!

I am for them so long as I can screen people with extreme prejudice. I want to only be able to receive PMs from Jesda.

Greg was always worried that the tech content of the forum would be lost if we went to PMs, but we don't really have an organized tech section anymore anyway...

Sure, there are articles, but they aren't all put into some kind of format for everyone to sort through. And besides, just about everything has been covered before, if you care to dig endlessly through the search results.

I just think PMs would really be that extra coolness that would make this my #1 site.

Also, if we get PMs, please make it so pictures can be posted in them. I want to be able to send pics of my weenie in private over the internet.

Why wouldn't you want PMs?If you don't like it - don't use it. They don't hurt you.But for those who'd like them (like me), it would be a great addition.

I don't know about anyone else but the Learned'd thread takes forever to refresh as it is. Plus it's just a big chat thread, which is why I say institute a live chatroom feature on top of the PM's. Personally I would only use the PM's to contact a seller or contact specific people (for example to say hey ____ get online so we can party on XBL) without having to clog up the forum with stupid threads.

As far as taking away from the tech side of things or the forum altogether, that is a moot point considering that every time a thread is started it's always shut down with REPOST or spammed, or threadjacked. If you don't think that then just try asking a relevant tech question or post something you think is interesting, you'll either get the r-e-p-o-s-t posts or get told to search, and even if you do search 9 times out of 10 you can't find it because the search feature isn't at all user friendly unless your search is specific to what has already been posted, but that's a different thread altogether.

Just institute a PM feature and a chat feature and I'm sure most of us will be satisfied with that. I don't use my Instant Messengers, and I don't need any more emails coming into my inbox, and honestly I don't know anyone's real names except maybe 5 of you so I can't find them on Facetoob, or Youbook, and even if I could I doubt I'd send friend requests because no one would accept them and if they did they'd wonder who I was and just delete me in a month or two.

A resounding NO. Not having PM's is a NICO tradition. If you want to say something here, you have to say it to everyone.

+1 for a no refresh Chat.

I say PM's would make a nice addition. I also say that the benefits outweigh the consequences. If you don't like it...I don't think you should have to use it. Hell, I don't plan on using it 95% of the time I'm here but it would be nice to know it's there if you need it.

Some people that use webmail might come here before checking their email. So they will get PM's before email. If a member needs to bring a discrepancy to a mods attention BAM, send a pm. No more "Change my name please!" threads.

<rant>

Noone is going to start sending random messages to girls. You're all not THAT hot. Noone is going to start PMing the NICO GODS that know everything about everything for help. Just put it in the "Read me first" rules and enforce it. Duhhhh!

Oh and as for keeping everything public and out in the open....Mind you're business, and Go suck on Eric Schmidt's you know what. Everyone deserves some form of privacy. Everything that's spoken isn't sometimes for everyone to hear.

I'm gonna say no. I hate being on Facebook and having random people messaging me and I feel obligated to talk to them. So I turned the messaging off.

JUST because I'm online, doesn't mean I want to talk to you... sometimes I just wanna read s*** and get out.

KV is right on. I wont be opposed to having PMs, but I have a feeling I'll be responding to numerous messages that the question should be posted on the forums. I can't even count how many emails (before I blocked my address) I received that started with "you'll probably think this is stupid, but I'm a noob..." when it comes to car A/V. Then, the number of those emails that ask similar questions is astounding. I usually redirect them to the forums, because not too many members are alone in their questions (no matter how basic). If they are answered in the public space, the answer lives on far longer than the original poster/responder.

The only pro I see for having PMs is that newbies to this community might feel more comfortable here. If we want to use that to attract new members, go for it. The having to respond to PMs saying "post this on the boards" is an acceptable trade-off IMO.
I agree with apple, I have always kept my email public, and for a long long time I was getting 2-3 emails a DAY asking for wheel fitment questions... I direct people to the forums... I think a "no refresh chat" would be great, but the problem with PMs is that info may be lost that other people will find useful!

If i answered every wheel fitment question, then id be answering them all day every day... You can give a man a fish and he eats for a day, but if you post publicly HOW TO FISH, everyone eats forever!

And to anyone who checks NICO more than they check their email, well I dont know how you do that!

I didnt vote... But i respond to my emails typically within minutes (if not, surely within 6 hrs or so) and if it was a PM, it would have to wait until I get to a computer (maybe 12 hrs!)

Ha! I just took mine off. I wouldn't mind PMs, but I'd probably just end up telling people to post the question on the formus to keep everyone educated. Plus, as much as I like to pretend, I don't know everything. There are plenty of knowledgeable (dare I say smarter) people on here that might be able to answer the questions better.

I voted yes, even though I'll most likely never use it, but it does seem like a good idea. I mean, of all the other forums I'm on, I've gotten like 1 PM in the past 2 years. Just seems kinda trivial to me. Also, I think that email is just as good. If we have the option to turn it off, I'll be happy.

Why is everyone so freaking worried about tech stuff being posted to PMs instead of being posted in the forum?

I don't know anyone who does that. If you need help with your car, you post a question to reach a wide audience. You don't send a PM just to one person because who wants to type up a big ole question when only one person is going to see it?

I only use PMs on my various boards for classified stuff or stuff that you just don't want to be publicized like asking Jesda about the results of his medical test involving that chick.
