Last night I walked to the store to buy some smokes, and I come back to find my front plate missing. Who in their right mind thinks stealing a plate is acceptable. Had to file a stupid report. Now i was wondering would I still be able to drive the car without a front plate? I know its a stupid question. I just don't have time to go to the DMV and get butt raped by the ridiculous prices on new plates for the time being. End stupid rant about crack heads in my neighborhood.

What state are you in? In MO its required but they typically never ticket anyone for it. Cops in my town know me, and I know them (and not from being arrested lol).

Oh sorry, I'm from Massachusetts. I was thinking the same, I never see anyone being pulled over for not having a front plate. I guess I'll just carry the police report in case I do get stopped. Then again I do get stupid tickets constantly. The worst one had to be the time i got a parking ticket for parking in front of my house. :picard:

That does suck. I imagine driving with a copy of the police report noting the stolen plate will enable you to drive without fear of a ticket, but only for a few weeks. Unfortunately, It won't stop you from getting pulled over due to the lack of a plate. If you plan to keep the car, I would recommend biting the bullet, lube up, and order the replacement plate sooner than later. you might get away with it with your local cops, but not necessarily with other towns/counties. Sorry.

Well I do plan on getting new plates but with mid terms and working constantly It really is a pain having to go to Danvers to get new plates. Some time this week I suppose. This is the 6th police report I had to file this year. Five of them consisted of me filing a hit and run report in Marblehead. God that place sucks.

lol. I have been pulled over for no front plate even tho it was in my window, but this is in VA. Not sure about MA. Could it have just fallen off or something? Or I guess a crackhead just used the imprint to hold his heroin while he loaded the needle.

How much are they asking for a plates anyways

AFAIK, every state in the east requires a front plate by law unless it is farm equipment. And then it isn't allowed on the streets after dark.

I had a wrecked vehicle where someone stole the plate in the shop's car lot. I called the DMV and they told me to call the police. I called the police to report it and they said I needed the plate number (which was not on my registration because I had just received the plate a few days before and I couldn't remember it off the top of my head). Called the DMV back and they said they would not give out plate numbers over the phone (understandable really), but I would have to come down and wait in line during normal business hours to get it. I said f*** it at that point, not going to take off work to wait in an hour long line to get a plate number. I have documented evidence the vehicle was wrecked and undrivable and was subsequently sold, and that will have to do if there are any problems.

Same with AZ. I never even knew other states needed front plates until I was like 17.

You have to have both plates over here. One day somebody parked in my buddies spot. He said "this pisses me off!"
I said "how much?"
He said "go on"
That front plate went walkies, enjoy the trip to LTO chump.

Here's a good rule of thumb, if they give you two plates, you probably have to use both of them.

Wrong, these states only require one rear plate (those in bold are considered eastern states)

Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia.

Funny, because my boy Steve from Delaware was just in town this weekend, and he said he got pulled over for not having his front tag. In his home state.

Only Nazi states require a front and rear plate.

Please explain a reason, other then surveillance, of why it is beneficial to have a front and rear plate.

Beneficial to whom? To toll authorities, makes it easier to identify EZpass/toll violaters by front or rear pictures.

If your car gets stolen (assuming you own a car worth stealing), the extra plate makes it a tad easier to spot/identify.

Best reason? Because it annoys PMQ. ;)

A real reason or the reason old ladies at the DMV give me when I turn their state sponsored retirement-job into actual work?

Well, I can't think of a real one, but I was told "so if you hit and run they'll see."

This by the same person who evaluates written exams and god knows what else.

MA has the s*** plate laws ever. People ride around in 15 year old plates with no front, but as long as they haven't had to replace it with the newer red ones, it's not legally required of them. I, of course, have yet to figure out why that makes sense even for the state cheap-assing out on money, since if there really was ANY legitimate reason for a front plate other than police-state behavior, they'd have uniformity in the requirement. Hell, I just touched up my green plates every year with green paint so they stayed readable until the plate literally started to crack.

If they catch you running a toll, they're going to want to take snapshots of the rear plate, since laws or not, it is the one you are most likely to have. If your car gets stolen, it's unlikely the plates will be on it for more than a few minutes. By the time you notice and report it, they're probably already off or the car is already somewhere it won't be seen or dumped.
