i painted my car last July quickly before my grad party using that Dupli-Color paint shop, which didn't turn out to bad for my first time painting. But i failed HARD with prep work in small areas and with spray gun pressure..

since in my eyes, it needs a repainting, im going black this time. my question is, how much paint (qts or gallons) do you think i should get? i was either looking at getting the Dupli-Color Jet Black or going to http://www.paintforcars.com and getting black off there. should i prime it again, or just sand good and spray the black over? Thanks everyone..

You probably want a gallon of paint.

I would sand/spray primer before re-painting it.

get a cheap black but if you get a good clear your paint job will come out really nice being that you are doing it yourself yes you will get orange but nothing sanding and buffing cant fix....i would keep it red if i were you but im partial heres what mine looked like in its first stage before wet sanding and buffing......just remember man it takes time and patience and it really all is in the prep work gl and keep us updated

i originally was going to do a nice dark blue, but time ran out and i just through red on it. my friend had a black 240 and painted it brilliant silver, and i like the black w/ black rims so im probably going that direction.

why type of paint did you use? i think i'll end up getting Acrylic Enamel Jet Black Gloss and clear coat from http://www.paintforcars.com.

btw, when i did it, gun was at like 30psi and it was REALLY warm that day (90*F)..but i think painting is really fun, especially if you do it. really makes you part of your car:)

Agreed thats why i enjoy my car more than most of my friends bing that i do most of the work on my car myself.....I used dupont (vermillion red) kind of pricey but i think it came out well (i dont have any updated pics) iirc my gun was somewhere around 20-25 and living in florida its always hot and HUMID which is what kicked my a55 more than once haha....i like that black though its nice im just partial to red not to mention that w/black your body/prep better be top notch or its going to show

you wont need a gallon of paint. a couple quarts should do because youre going to reduce the paint anyways, and end up with more volume. theres also no need to sand it, and re prime it. just wetsand with 600 and youre good to go. 35 psi is just about right where you want you air pressure. use a test panel first to adjust your air pressure, and volume going through the gun.... along with spray pattern. a big piece of cardboard works well for this. i say keep it red. just sand it with 600 grit, spray another coat of red base on there, then clear it. spraying clear is alot harder to lay down than base. its easy on flat panels, but vertical panels takes alot of practice.

the best way is to find a pro...and trade work,or something if he's willing...I get my s*** painted for tattoos. I'm a pro tattoo artist and I met a painter who needed my ink and I needed his paint. trade trades....he asked me to buy the paint a cost from him and help him sand and s*** and he'd spray for free then I'll ink him up...connections my friends are the best things in life.

Hello, new here but been a 240 lover for a long time.im a painters helper.almost to the big money!!!! it there is clear on that car. i cant tell from the pics i would sand it a DA with 400 grit.buy urself some red scotch bright pads.make sure u sand ur edges. thats the first place paint will lift.then seal it base n clear.if u wanna go kinda cheaper you could get single stage paint which is kinda like semi gloss. it wont last as long as base clear but itll do for a quicky.if its just base on your car then wet sand 600 grit n seal/base/clear.move ur gun at a med speed when clearing.dry clear is bad but runny clear is worse for a novice.once dry.wet sand clear with 1500 wet paper n buff .if u get a run and its bad you can shave them off with a razor blade then block it down with 1000.be careful not to sand trough the clear.hope it helps.

By the way some of ur guys paint threads boggle my mind. but i love this site. u guys r great

dont use dupli color paint shop. i just painted my front bumper and hated it. get some real paint. i just bought a gallon of primer, gallon of white, gallon of clear along with the reducers and hardners for $350. the paint is from nason. the guys said its quality paint too. go to a real paint shop not autozone. i learned this the hard way. but i guess you did too.

i did ALOT of body work on one of the quarter panels, since it was hit, and it is NOT flat and smooth anymore even after the extensive amount of hours i put into it. so basically with black, all bumps, dings, and dents are going to show really easy? im still going back and forth on it...

Indeed, what I do to kind of check my bodywork is get those cheapo rattle cans of glossy black from walmart and just kinda spray a thin covering coat and step back and some of the imperfections should stand out. I also have a painters light which kind of takes the glare off of the surface.

I'm no professional painter, I've thought about going to school for it though, but I HAVE painted 2 or so cars and a few panels and am in the process of painting my 240 with PPG paint at the moment.

so since im repaiting anyway, what i could do it get some black rattle can gloss and spray the area(s) i think might show imperfections, then if i like it go with black, and if not go with red?

i would use the spray method but if you know neone w/a painters light its also very helpful....your kinda stuck becaause red is the most expensive but if you do a bad job (prep wise) your end product will suffer i say cut your losses wet sand redo your trouble spots and respray it red....then if it comes out well you can go back in the future and do black if you want but that color is just too much for a first timer (plus its a PITA to keep clean).......cliffnotes:stay RED

Contrasting colors such as black will help you find spots. spray the area in question with black and block sand it. That will show you the high/low spots <- if you are going into that much detail with the job..

Rattle cans are capable of looking pretty decent and legit if done correctly. Go the extra mile with good effort and save a few bills from running out of your wallet.
