This is gonna sound a little weird, but I actually turn the bass almost all the way down on my References. Their bass output is reasonable, but I don't have a big enough amp. so it starts to distort at high volume. Sooo... I turn the bass most of the way down and the sub output all the way up and let the 12" Kicker Comp take care of the low down. I also don't bother with rear speakers, no need.
