I wore one in the 80's. Looked good with my white linen jacket and pressed khakis (no socks).

Ugh. I've said too much....

White watches are for brown people...

If you are white with a tan, it kinda works, if you're dressed up all fancy, that is...

NO straight male should wear a diamond-encrusted watch. It is man-jewelry, and man-jewelry is ferociously homosexual.

If you're going to spend a grip on a timepiece, do it because it actually DOES something, not because it's shiny. Women buy shiny shxt, we buy functional things.

If you've got ~$2,350,000, you can pick up a Vacheron Constantin Tour D'Ille.

16 horological complications including quarter and minute repeating, Tourbillon, Power reserve, Moonphase and age, perpetual calendar, sunrise and sunset, sky charting, and other awesomeness. ALL MECHANICAL, no batteries, 100% automatic. Only 7 will ever be made and it required 10,000 hours of R&D.

Waste of money.

A good watch doesn't need to do any of that nonsense. Don't get me wrong, if I could afford a Tag or a Breitling, I'd love to have one.... but no one actually uses the crap on that watch.

Agreed. I hate gold. I'm not against leather bands, but I prefer them in black. Metal bands are definitely my preference, though.

I don't like to wear watches period, that sh*t dangling on my wrist just bothers me. And that goes for all jeweleries too.

But if that watch is $1000+ I'll rock it haha.

Now, I would never SPEND five, six, or seven figures on a watch, but if for whatever reason I was inclined to, it sure as hell wouldn't have diamonds on it.

Automatic complications are cool because they are a feat of engineering, whether anyone cares about moon age isn't the point.

I wear a Tag F1 chrono because I got it for free from an employer.

the engineering and craftsmanship involved is one thing...truth be told, I'd rather drop 5 figures on some cool obscure car instead though.

So are the people that dismiss a watch just because it's a quartz and not an automatic. I'd rather have a quality quartz than a cheap auto (Invicta, anyone?). I wouldn't shell out $1k for an Omega quartz even though I love the brand, but think about the Bell & Ross Hydromax that will cost you $2K +/- at the regster. It's a quartz, but it's also good to a depth of an incredible 11,000 metres! Overbuilt and unnecessary? Absolutely. But that Vacheron Constantin you posted is nothing to me but the horological equivalent of a garage queen. Additionally, at only 18,000 bph and 16 complications there are far more accurate automatic watches available then the I'lle and last I checked the primary function of a watch is to tell time. It's not even water resistant, say what you want but despite all it's "functions" it's just a piece of jewelry.

In the end it's all what a buyer wants, I want something I can wear everyday, with a suit or jeans & and t-shirt, in the office or in a wetsuit. That makes my cheap watches from Bulova, Seiko & Citizen and my expensive ones (still deciding on "the one") from Rolex, Omega or Doxa.

I can definately see one of my friends purchasing said white watch...

With that said, it's not a queer thing. Just really flashy. Something a local rapper or guido would wear.

I bought a nice Rolex Oyster in NYC a few years ago. It cost me $5 (hey, the guy originally wanted $10 for it). I had bought a decent band for it and wore it to a few swanky events. From a distance it looked real. But it was amusing whenever someone noticed it, and I'd tell 'em, " Aww, this old thing?"

The most hilarious thing about all the hoopla over those uber-expensive watches is the fact that the interface (hands on a dial) are imprecise as a method of conveying information.

So it's a stupid thing to worry about anyway.

Plus, someone has to "set" the time - What if they set it 12 seconds fast? OMG.

Lastly, who cares? If you can afford a $20K watch, it's unlikely you give a damn about being late a minute or two.

This is sort of the point. A two and a half million dollar watch is obviously not something anyone is ever going to actually wear. People would hack off your hand to get it, it's a wearable target.

An incredibly expensive and complicated automatic watch is a lot like a sixty million dollar sailing yacht. It's the ultimate modern interpretation of ancient technology and it exists largely just for the sake of demonstrating "look what we can engineer", because a digital watch and a powered yacht are both, respectively, much more practical devices.

They're incredibly cool and I am in awe of them as accomplishments, but I'd never buy one as it's a terrible use of funds.

My beef with expensive quartz watches is that no quartz movement is worth more than about fifty bucks. Why is an Omega Quartz watch worth $1,500 and a Seiko is only worth $300? I take issue with the needless markup.

The Bell & Ross example is totally different, as you're paying for a case that's good to 11,000 meters. This is obviously worth the price of admission should you require that functionality.

Swatches are cool. I remember when they made the series that had the wireless lift tickets incorporated in them back in the late 90's. Worked at a bunch of euro mountains and a few in Colorado.

Nothing more iconic than a basic swatch.

Buying s*** with the express intent of NOT using it is stupid, whether it has diamonds on it or not. People who buy Ferraris to park them in garages deserve to have them stolen and put to proper use. Same for people who buy watches so they can not wear them.

You can bet that if I spent $2.5M on a watch, I'd wear the s*** out of that thing. If someone steals it at least I can say it was stolen while being used rather than sitting behind glass and increasing my douchebag quotient.
