Just had her changed over to her summer clothes Valvo DuraBlend 10W40. Not a full Synth as I'm afraid the detergents in a full synth might loosen anything that might (don't think) be in there.

(sits back to see what the Oil Authority says, hopes it's good)

While I dont share your concern about full synths causing leaks (nearly all of them have <some> group V added to prevent just that), I would say that Valvoline Durablend 10w-40 is a very fine choice for a summer oil.

Nissan suggests 5w-30 in Europe for the SR20DET motor and the CA18DET.

I run Royal Purple 10w40 at the moment. I honestly think it's a better oil than Mobil 1 in terms of lubrication and film strength.

I work at Mazda and the Royal Purple guys came by. They had a bearing which was loaded by adding weights on the end of a rod which pushed the bearing down on a rotating circular metal peice. Everything we had seized after 3 weights were put on it. The only other oil that would hold all 4 weights is the oil I previously held in belief as the best, Amsoil. However, the Amsoil test did more scoring and damage to the bearing than the Royal Purple by far. We then took the bearing and ran it dry (IE no resevoir of oil to continuously coat the bearing), even to the Royal Purple guy's dismay the small amount of royal purple withstood all 4 weights for 10 minutes and it did not seize! Say what you want but to be able to run a loaded bearing on a machine for 10 minutes with NO oil is saying something. When we removed the bearing it had LESS damage on it than the Mobil 1 synthetic test!

So I know the Royal Purple stands out in the lubrication department but it might not be better than Amsoil in the anti-breakdown areas. But since I'm running an n/a engine I don't need a ton of anti-coking ability since the oil doesn't sit inside the turbo roasting.

It's listed on the computer here at work... it's on All-Data, which you can't access unless you have an account.

I'm at work BTW. It's 4:50 and I have 5 minutes left on my LUNCH break lol.... talk about busy.

The only SR20DET thats "original" in OZ is the S15 motor, which is not in Europe.

The 2.0L turbo in Australia is the SR20DET right?MOBIL lists it as 50 weight.

Well... it's a 99+ MY release. Some vehicles may share the same motor but I've learned that they will require different weights of oil.

Moral is... the S15 is a newer vehicle built to work on newer grades of oil. The S13 however was developed 15 years ago, and hence may have different suggested oil weights.

When an engine is the same it needs the same oil.Teh only thing that has changed since then is the renewed need to find a trick or 2 to met CAFE.

And <yes> there are different recommendation for different model years.

but if anything as ECU's + Tune's become more aggressive upping combustion chamber temperatures the trend should actually be upward in viscosity recomendations.

the fact that it is the other way around has more to do with considerations other than engine protection now play a role in manufacturers viscosity recomendations.

I live in Florida... and my car burns a lil oil here and there.. i have i think 160k on the motor... (don't know really how many cuz it reads in Kilos) but ever since i started hearing my timing chain rattle here and there i started running 20w50.. and it seems to have gona away for now.. but i also notice that my motor seems to rev down rather quickly as if its too much for the motor to handle... is that right???

Racin'

both your climate and your milage poitn towards a 50weight oil.

I wouldnt lose any sleep over it, but you can go to a 10w-40 (Valvoline Durabledn for example) and see what effects (if any) you observe.

I Still like a 40 weight oil for a KA ( or most engines for that matter). But since you do a lot of short trips you need good start-up flow.

The choice is easy, MOBIL1 0w-40 or ValvolineSynPower 5w-40, there are other oils too but the are even harder to find.

Both of these can be had at many Autozones ( but not all).

Eiethr one will be an excellent choice.

I kinda like the MOBIL1 better for a clean engien ( better start-up flow) but I like teh detergent package in SynPower and I seen it work well on engien's that werent very clean internally.

Wait!

WhenI looked at your sig it said base model but your s/n says turbo?Which is it?Cuz it makes a diffrence.

If you are running a turbo especially an aftermarket, run the 15w-50 ( unless u r in a cold northern winter then use M1 0w-40)

Honda will see problems from that.

BMW already has seen problems from its 5w-30 recommendations and has upped its viscosity recomendation to 5w-40 (in Erope) and even 10w-60 for some motors.
