I wanted to hook up my volt gauge to do something useful, instead of just telling me what my battery voltage is. I know a volt gauge can be wired up to tell you the output voltage from the alternator but the problem is i dont know how.

any hook up (ignition switch, etc) is going to show alternator voltage bc it goes straight to the battery!

^ditto. If you're going to mount the gauge in the center dash vent or under the radio then you can tap into the switched 12v for the the radio. If you're mounting it on/around the steering column, tap into the ignition switch. It's good to see you posting on here Taylor.

If you want to know how much the alternator is putting out you need an amp gauge, not a volt gauge.
