Okay guys, I need your help. I've had a string of bad luck with my S13 lately. First my thermostat went out, and then a week after fixing that my radiator blew a hole in itself. I put in a new radiator and now I think I have a blown headgasket. My car got pretty hot when my thermostat failed and then when my radiator went to crap, so that's how I think it happened.

Normally, I would attempt to replace the HG myself or with the help of a friend. Right now I'm away from home doing an internship, so I don't have any of my tools or resources to do the job myself. I called up a few shops and it would be $1300+ for them to fix it. I don't have that kind of cash to pay a shop to fix it, nor is it really worth it on a stock S13.

The big problem is I have to move out and go back home and then to campus in a little over two weeks. I'm thinking I could just pay someone to personally come and fix it for me (I know nobody in the NW Chicago area), or trade (plus some cash on my end) for something new. If I trade I want to get another sport compact that has performance potential, but worst case I'll just get something to get me from A to B.

What would you guys do? I might make a post to gauge interest on my S13 as is with the bad HG. Any advice is appreciated.

what problems are you having now? (what makes you think its a bad head gasket)

Id make absolutely sure it needs a head gasket then go from there.

Sorry to hear your problems man. My guess is when your thermostat took a dump, the pressure from the pump side was so much that your radiator couldnt handle it and pooped, but before it pooped your head gasket went. Now, $1300 is high to replace the head gasket. Its normaly a $500-600 job. If you have a friend and tools that will allow you to pull the head, timing cover and oil pan then you could go that route too.

then also, if its a KA, you can check the local speed/swap shops. theyll probably have perfectly working KAs from swapped cars that you could buy for cheap (or free)

My symptoms:zerothread/187885

I haven't been able to check the compression since, like I said, I don't have the tools.

My car is DOHC, but swapping out the engine isn't really feasible. It would take too much time and I don't have the resources. I thought it would be $500-600 from a shop too, but I called around several places and they were all at least twice that.

I may just have to bite the bullet and get a different car.
