You can use spacers to "effect" the offset, but his worked because of the width/offset relationship.

Maybe this will help some ...From our wheels FAQ in the wheels sub-forumWhat does offset mean?

So, a 9 inch width on the wheel wouldn't be too bad? Or would it be excessive after the inclusion of actual tire?

I'd like a wide tire, especially in the rear, something I've seen a lot of on 7-Series BMW's. I'd like to go the maximum width without rubbing or having to resort to that goofy "broken axle" negative camber.

Any size [95 load index or better] wheel tire is fine as long as you maintain oem unspring weight.

Even a couple of extra pounds can be felt by an expert driver.

Historically the front would be more sensitive than the rear.

Why newer vehicles with larger wheels have had to go to aluminum lower suspension arms, hollower sway bars, every trick in book to make up for wheel weight [plus rotor and caliper weight]. Even moving springs shocks inward to lighten their effective poundage in turns.

I have 18x9 +35 with 245/45/18 on all four corners on my (lowered) Q.

You can go wider in the rear, search for some posts by Jeff Williams.

BUT big quality wheels don't come cheap.

That's fine. 9 inches in the back and 8 or 8.5 in the front is good enough for me.

The 9 inch in the front doesn't rub or cause any abnormalities? Even lowered?

After I made my post this morning I realized that the tire would not be optimal for the car, it seems like the 18x8, 245/45/18 with a +40 offset is the way to go for best performance.
