140mph!

Shhh!

But I know for a fact that my speedo is a bit off.

I've driven next to people who have those big digital readout speedometers and there always 3 or 4 mph slower than what mine says.

I like the classic speeding stories thread.

I got lots. When I was a kid I had countless speeding & "exhibition of speed" tickets. Well over 20. That was back in the day when you could stay out of jail and keep a restricted license as long as you didn't have any criminal violations and you were a student AND had a job.

I've owned;67 Camaro 69 Camaro RS 68 FirebirdKZ650 KZ1000 KZ1300 bikes

My 1st car was a 79 Trans Am - Black w/ the bird on the hood and all.I got a ticket in it on the way home from the dealer. I was 15 1/2 & had a leaners permit.

1 month after that, going to my buds in Santa Barbara, coming down that steep grade on the 101fwy I had the speedo pegged.

A black Mercedes 450SL pulled up next to me. I mouthed to him "How Fast". He hand signaled back to me "155". Then waved bye-bye and left me like I was standing still. I was 16 years old.

Still to this day, I love that story.

Oh! And if I ever find out my kid pulls anything like that, I' freaking kill him!

Indicated 153 mph, westbound between Kerrville, Tx., and Ozona, Tx., on I-10, just after daybreak, maybe 7 years ago! On new Yoko 225 V rateds. THEN, had to back off when CB antenna slipped off trunk lid! Recent trip on NM's I-25 saw routine speeds of 125 mph on my 92 Q w/ 134K miles! Pilot 235 H tires not new, therefore, more moderate speeds!

Unfortunately the Q speedometer being just a D'Arsonval type zero to 5 volts meter is only accurate at 55mph....................the voltage can be read more accurately with a digital voltmeter.

As the needle swing over the top [vertical 12 o'clock position] gravity changes the accuracy against the spring.

A high speeds [above 130] the tires stretch and become larger and depending on tire this can cause a 3-10% error.

Same problem with tachometer.

WARNING: Speeds over 70mph should not be attempted unless you have rated tires and known good suspension components.

I'm a Safety Engineer but came out of my shell and did 130 mph on a wide road on private property. No people, trees, poles or Popos. Ran out of straight road or I could have gone a lot faster. It was a thrill.

You'll survive a blown engine/transmission/rear end but not a rollover or head-on into a tree. Pick the right place and time for the speed runs and bring along a helmet. Sorry for the lecture.

Back in 02 at around 3:00 AM, right after the gig, I'm on the 101 on that stretch between the 405 and Woodland Hills around Winnetka I hit 137. I then realized what could happen if I hit ANYTHING at that speed and that was that.

Been up to 120-125 a couple times. At least that's what the speedo said. I would love to get some awesome tires, get the suspension completely refurbished, crank up the boost to 8 psi and take it to the GM proving grounds by my house and open up the Q. That would be a rush.

One can dream...

Good crap, you guys are crazy. I didn't know that the Q was a racecar

Don't ask me why but the previous owner put Sears tires on the Q that are rated at 85 MPH

I don't think I will be taking my Q no 130 MPH any time soon...but when I do....

Yes, once you pass about 115-120 it gets creepy. I can't imagine doing 200+. That's got to be a rush.

You guys here the news story about the Lambo doing 219 here in Phoenix? That stretch of freeway is near where I live.

Here's the video on YouTube. Guess the cops are trying to hunt this guy down but he left town The guys dumb enough to show his face on the video. lol

And tires that have never had an internal patch done due to a nail or something like that! Any patch instantly derates the speed ratings of any tire.

I've had the speedo to 145 many times on my Qs. It takes them a little while to get there, but they do go pretty fast for a small engined land yacht. Now, my '89 camaro, I've had it well beyond the point of pegged at 160. I'd say 180, give or take. That's FAST even compared to 140. Just going flat out for a few miles with the tach pegged on 7K rpm with the windows sucked out about an inch on both sides... those were the days. Just tonight I was in town and spun and fishtailed all the way through 1st gear in my '93 Q. I then found out a cop was right behind me. He followed me for a bit and then split off. It's nice driving an old person's car sometimes.

nice story ScottJackson... I push it up there by 140 sometimes for the kick and I don’t know I drove 150 today for about 2-3 miles which I assume is 145 with the miss of the speedometer and I love it when other cars try to join in and realize their governor kicks in at 135-140 I think it makes them kick them self in the head when they see a 8 year old car is just cruising at that speed and I had a question about the Y33s top speed is it 155 or 160+? Because I have a more room to top out never taken her above 150 something....

Not too long after I bought my '94 Q45t in '96, I had to go to a funeral in LA from Phoenix. I was sick, so my brother flew into Phoenix and drove us to LA. He held 135 on the speedo all the way, and on the return trip too. No, we never got stopped. Interestingly enough, after that run, my fuel mileage increased a LOT, and oil consumption was not measurable. I suspect that run fully seated the rings and valves. When I traded it last January, it still used no oil, and got around 21 mpg mixed city/freeway.

Hmmm, maybe that's why mine gets 22-24mpg. Ya gotta run 'em hard every now and then.

I took my very stock 94 Q45a up to a weekend of high performance Driver Education (sponsored by Porsche Club of Hou ,Dallas, Austin) . The 2.9 mile course has 15 turns, longest straight about 1/2 mile, 3 other much shorter straights. The ONLY mod from pure stock is a strut tower brace.

Front brake pads are Bendix ceramic and the rears were also supposed to be that (most likely were not.) Tires 225x60-15 Fusion M&S (selected some time ago for wet street traction (AA) and hot freeway durability (temp rating A).

Brakes could easily bring tires to breakaway and never faded until rear linings ran out last lap of 4th run (I was pushing real hard-either max braking or max throttle almost all the time. The final lap finish of metal to metal ruined rear rotors of course. B4 starting that track session, the pads looked OK and good for at least 2 more sessions. On examination, it was obvious from the pad backing they were different that fronts and lining simply evaporated.

Front pads had 45K miles on them already!, still with 3/4 depth at start, rears same condition--and fronts STILL are well over 50%, with 6 hard sessions +45K miles!! Rotors are pristine also.

I was able to out run many of the Porsche's on the straights--but they generally had more cornering ability of course- with real wide, low profile gummy tires, track brakes and springs (those guys were SERIOUS-I just wanted training in high speed manuvering ,etc)

Was able to keep tires at breakaway on curves easily, holding my own with many on all but sharpest turns. Had one experience of real bad under-steer cresting a hill and failed to tap brakes to set the front end down B4 turning the wheel. Over-steer was easy to modulate with throttle. Wish I could 'hold' the transmission in a gear with no overdrive in/out lag. sometimes upset car with surge of 'go-fast' in middle of corners as throttle mashed to exit the turn and transmission computer backed out torque for shifting and then power returned with a surge on computer release. The 'sag-shove' was annoying.- I want to get rid of the 'sag' portion.

I was a great experience--coming off the front straight at 125 down onto the road course, hauling speed down ASAP then left, left, exiting at 55, short straight up to 85, brake brake 90 deg hard right, short straight up to 85, brake to 55, hard right, another short straight, sweeping left at 85, brake hard to 50, hard descending left (bad understeer here once- left the track), medium straight up to 95, steep banked sweeping left (after tap of brakes, hard braking to 45,sharp left, descending hard right, short straight to 75, brake hard , into a decreasing radius flat right 180 deg (43 mph) right into hard left onto 2 nd longest straight up to 95, medium left up-slope blindly into hard braking to 45,immediate hard left, right, left combo, accelerating at max onto long banked front straight up to 125 or so. WHew--2.9 miles in ??

Next time it is with wide sticky 16" gummmy-bears and metal-matrix pads, sway bar end links tightened up hard, and active computer tweaked if I can figure out how.

Rode several lap with my instructor in his nearly stock BMW M-3--awesome cornering forces.

The 'active' eliminates LOTS of body roll and all dive/squat, so it takes some re-learning from a 'standard' sedan.

Thanks for the great play-by-play, Keith!

I could almost feel myself there with you. I HATE that 180* decreasing radius turn, but that lil hopper where you understeered sounds like fun once you got it dialed in.

Actually, I was never much for reaching very high speeds but more so brief displays of speed and that was in my early 20's. I've only had my Q up to like 85mph. Now at the immortal age of 20 in 1991, my first purchased car was a brand new black Honda Crx Si. I whooped a Mazda Rx7 of similiar year from light to light Uptown and out ran a Mitsubishi EagleTalon on the highway till I reached 100mph and was passed .

Yikes! Most unsafe ... even at lower speeds, since the load index is likely too low for a Q - even static weight, let alone dynamic driving impacts.

Please, please, change them out immediately. There are relatively inexpensive tires available at Tire Rack that will be safer.

I just put the new wheels on my car with NEW BFG's on them. The back ones rub when I go over bumps so I am going to get some lower profile tires.

I hit 65 mph on my way to work today, a new record. I've had my Q for approx. 17 hours at the point, so it was the fastest I've ever gone in it. I'm kinda scared to go any faster because the front passenger strut is blown, the other 3 are at least 80K miles old and it's need an alignment. Plus, I'm not sure if I trust the tires either...

Speaking of struts, my rear and front passenger side are leaking. I don't think I'm gonna have the same issue I did when I owned a 1993 Mazda 929. That vehicle had struts that were dealer only and $200 per strut.
