Advanced, which means the piston will be lower when spark occurs

Please TMS, lock this, I cant bear to see whats going to happen.

To the OP, I dont fully understand your question, as it makes no sense.

You need to do some serious reading. Learn how an engine works, then learn how adjusting ignition timing effects an engine.

That being said, timing on an SR is computer controlled, setting it to something other than factory is downright stupid.

on this months project car magazine the got a stock ka24de engine and put aem intake, coilovers, 5-speed swap, and slotted brakes... and just before the 240's drift trials they set the timing to 15 BTDC...

I dont know where you got the idea this was a mod of some sort, but IIRC 15 degrees BTDC is the factory base setting. They most likely set it there while doing the tune up. Occasionally re setting base timing is normal maintenance.

Tell you what, paypal me $5 and I will explain all the little intricacies of timing advance/retard on a modern engine.

I'm an old school, let the kid smack his head on the curb a few times kind of guy. Those lessons stick. Now i need to hurry up and get the flame retardent foam sprayed all over and run into my "observation bunker".

Your pretty much asking theory of operation of NA ignition and turbo ignition which are different monsters.

stock timing for a ka24de is 20*btdc. Why would they retard it 5*? it would make it even slower than the engine already is.

I wasn't sure, I haven't owned a DE in like 5 years.

My guess is they were dealing with detonation issues. Its possible that they were attempting to increase torque production in the lower range by reducing knock. This could allow the ECU to over advance timing in the lower range. Its likely it would only reach the preset knock limit, somewhere close to redline. This would essentially increase mid range power, without greatly sacrificing the engines ceiling.
