I wanna start autocrossing, but it looks so intimidating to me! I feel like I wouldn't know where to drive! It looks like cones are just randomly strewn about! I can't really understand the track layout when looking at auto-x videos.

Where any of you guys like this when you first started? Is it the kinda thing were the line makes sense once you're actually in the car running the course?

And I wonder what class my S13 would be in? I'm scared I eff'd up royally years ago and put some mods that might put me in some rediculous class... :ohno:

to me that's pretty much how I felt...you get used to it. walking the course with a group helps immensely.

I know there's a link somewhere to the SCCA rulebook....

There's a group autocrossing really close by me on the 22nd. I'd love to go if I my S13's KA weren't in pieces at the moment.

Question: how do the tech guys at the track determine if certain things are legal for your class? For example: would they be able to determine if my KA had OEM mods like a 248/232 cam swap, J30 diff, J30/Q45 brakes or S14 intake manifold? Would this stuff be cheating if I didn't disclose it?

you could have it protested and piss off people?

besides, you're only cheating yourself if you're not in the proper class.

There is a strong possibility of this being true. Like if you swapped out your lugs will probably put you in STX (I could be wrong about this, in which case you might be bumped to prepped or street prepped if you swapped them for S14 lugs), which will be very difficult nationally for a S13 but regionally you may not have hard competition.

When you first start off you're going to suck and suck bad. Nobody is good their first time. IIRC, the first time I autocrossed, I was around 9-10 seconds off the pace of most of the field on a national style course setup (which is easy to get lost in if you dont have lots of experience). You basically have to keep pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and keep going to get better. Most autcrossers are not ***holes, or if they are, they wont talk any junk about you while you're around. You'll find that if you're genuine out there and humble, you'll not have to look far to find someone to talk to regarding the course and driving.

Mainly just get out there and have fun.

Ah, yea with that stuff you're either SM or Prepared. Check the rule book for specifics.

Yeah, aside from the previous things I mentioned, I also have:
-intake, header, 3inch exhaust piping.
-S-tech springs, KYB AGX's
-front & rear swaybars and strut tower bars
-exedy stage 1 clutch, 11 lbs flywheel.
-slotted rotors and 16x8.5 Kosei K1's (4 lug 4 lyfe!) with 245/45 rubber.

What else would be in the class that I'd be driving in with these mods? :ohno:

The scca rule book will tell you what cars run in which classes. Sit down during an afternoon/evening and give it a good look over.

Like I said, at first you're going to be pretty bad, so competing isn't even a factor right now. Get out there, get some seat time and learn your car and how to read courses =)

YUP, it was confusing as hell my first time out, I got went off course for my first run. The main thing that messes you up is trying to compete and win. If you just pace yourself and learn the car/course, you'll be good. But it definitely is confusing at first. It helps to have an instructor in the car because he'll give you hand signals showing you where to turn etc.

....I need to fix my stupid car.

I need to heal my shoulder. RIght now it's still too tender to thrash my car around. I think I should still be in a stock class, all I've done was add stainless brake lines back when I swapped some Hawk pads on.

Oh man, tell me about it. Earlier this season I was taking a set of r-comps out for an initial heat cycling and while I was putting heat in the tires doing figure 8's I wasn't strapped in. Anyway, I tweaked the hell out of my back and for about half this season I've been in a rather large amount of pain each event. Luckily it's subsided quite a bit and I've not had any problems, but for about 7-8 events I was having to slam a bunch of motrin and try to turn off my brains pain sensing functions.

yeah....I don't wanna do that either. Anyone that says racing isn't physical is someone I don't feel safe driving with.

I assume you've got at least a 4 point in the rolla right?

Yea, 5 points in both the Rolla and the MR2.

Last year I did lapping in a Formula Ford and my neck was obliterated after a session. After I got out of the monocoque, my instructor looked at me and said that it was very apparent that I didn't work out.

I was like that a little bit... not intimidated, but confused.

You wont get it from videos... You wont even get it in person. You won't get it till you f*** it up at least once :chuckle: .... but what ever. Its an empty parking lot and they are only cones... What is going to happen? Most clubs have swiched to simply subtracting 2 seconds per cone, rather then punching you in the gut, so there is really not too much to lose other then the false belief that you are an amazing driver.

Also, who cares about class?
No disrespect to the sport... but its a pretty joke form of serious racing. It is an organized and glorified way to d!ck around with your car in a parking lot.
Forget what class you may be in, or how competitive you could be and just go drive. Autocross is all about having fun and learning to be a better driver in a very safe environment.

Nobody should be scared. I visited Jim this weekend and got the pleasure of watching a very young girl beating on daddy's F430.

I don't know if every region does it, but here they throw an extra 2 on your number the first season so they know you're a rookie too. I've found most of the people are friendly here also.

Her and daddy had the worst sense of humor too... I was cracking jokes with everyone and they just sort of ignored me, like, "Who is this Corolla driving infidel talking to me?"

The Daddy ran a 44.9, the Daughter ran a 49.9, both got 5 runs a piece. My car's brakes started failing halfway through my first run and I logged a 39.3 on my one and only run of the day as it'd have been very unsafe to run the car any more. You can see in the video at the end where I'm viciously pumping the brakes to get the car to stop after I passed through the timing gate.

I wish I had a separate caliper for my parking brake too =(

On a side note, I'll be autocrossing an e-stock car this weekend in the Virginia Autocross Championship. Unluckily for me, my only r-comps for it are Hoosier R6's. Further unluckily for me, I'll be going against Ed Raymundo, who has been autocrossing since it was called StageCoachCrossing.

Apples and oranges. My car I'm borrowing is bone stock (none of the allowed things in stock are done to it, shocks, sways, etc) and all original parts from 1994 (where as anyone remotely serious about racing in stock refreshes everything on their car), on 205 R6's (drastically different than A6's) that are mounted to my pizza cutter MR2 wheels I have for club racing regulations. This is in no way in the vicinity of a prepped vehicle ripe for competing.

This is not a competition. Bearing any unforeseen vehicle failures, Ed will easily decimate my times as I would if the vehicles were reversed. The only reason I'm throwing down is the fact that this takes place on concrete (which is a rarity out here and the surface on which the nationals takes place on) and with the PAX benefit of e stock, I have a chance of winning one of the PAX awards.

If you're not autocrossing, then you missed this whole season... Unless you live in an area with a very gentle climate, you're probably going to have to travel quite a good distance to autocross.

Final SCCA Event of the season near me, Delaware Park, Skydragoness' home region (Philly SCCA). Myself and some fellow DC SCCA folk migrated there and took home class wins in Street Mod (me), E-Stock, Street Touring Unlimited and D-Mod. My winning pass is below:
