I ran 10w-40 in my KA, and I was going to pick up 4 quarts (how many does the CA take?) and an oil filter today, but I wasnt shure if putting 10w-40 synthetic in it was a good idea or not? I just bought the car and I always change the oil when I buy them, so if you guys could help me out I would be very grateful. thanks.

I prefere heavier weight oils in a turbo motor. I run 10-40 in the summer and 0-40 in the winter. (both mobil 1)

No. The higher the number, the higher the viscosity, or thicker it is. (also referred to as being "heavier")

so its better to run 0-40 in winter? With 10w-40 on very cold mornings i get a second or two of valve ticking before the oil gets going. Would a 0-40 oil cure that?

I'm currently running 10W40 myself.. redline oil, was running dino oil for awhile because I was roasting the oil real quick and wanted to stay cheap. I think that it was due to my efans' relay being dead and so it would roast the oil when I got off the highway (i.e. driving through etc).

Last dino change lasted a full 5000km plus a tad so I've gone back to redline to see if it lasts too.. didn't want to keep using up the expensive stuff if it was only going to last 1-2k :P

It won't stop it from happening, but they should pump up quicker. The lifters are ticking because they are probabally internally varnished and aren't sealing like they are supposed to. Get some stuff called Quickclean, it's made by a company called BG. It's an engine flush. GOOD shtufff. I love it. But read the directions carefully and DON'T put it in for any longer than it tells you. You'll boil off the stuff and leave the deposits in the motor still.

I have contemplated running some seafoam though my engine. Sounds like it is the same stuff.

seafoam is some good stuff. its like draino for engines.

i run castrol 10w-40. its some good stuff. i would highly reccomend it to anyone not running a synthetic oil. we run it in all our vehicles and they've all gone (with the exception of my mom's volvo) 200k without any problems.

I've run 15W-50 Mobil1 since it went in over 2 years ago. Always done me well.

But @ ~$7.50/qt, and ~4.5qt capacity due to my oil cooler setup, oil changes are PRICEY...Good thing I get 20% off cuz I work for Advance Auto

%20 wow, saving lots of money rico, good stuff. Basically it comes down to the season, the condition of your engine, your budget, and mileage. IMO I think 15w40 or 10w30/40 is good during the spring and summer. And during the cold temperatures of fall and winter I recommend lowering the weight to 5w30 (also used in new engines until 10k/15k miles) and maybe even 0w40.

I used Castrol GTX in my KA and in my CA when I was running dino oil.

Once it finally get cooler here, I will switch to my cold weather oil. Honestly though, I ususally run 15W-50 all year round bc I have the good ol cold start issue so I let her warm up first anyway.

Yeah, the 20% is nice, but all special order parts (stuff from Autometer, Apex, etc....basically ANY performance part you can think of that we don't stock) I can order and pay ... wait for it ... Wholesale cost Yeah, working at a parts house has its advantages. I also get the 20% at any other parts store AND the dealership Plus, my Advance has a privately owned shop attatched, so any mechanicing I get for damn near free. They are pressing my Energy Suspension kit in for me for FREE!

I'm going to change my oil tomorrow, i haven't bought anything yet. I was thinking of going with 0w-40 castrol gtx seeing as it is getting colder now. This shouldn't cause any issues like being to light or anything right? I usually run 10w-40 but that was in the summer months.

You might want to consult the oil bible ( just it) and read the part about flushing oils. If your car is high mileage already this might do more harm than good...

I am going to run 0-40 over the winter, because I do live in Florida and it still gets hot during the day.

There is no one right answer for every application. Someone who lives in Indiana/Michigan.Colorado shouldnt care what the guys in texas/florida/s.california run for oil.

i hear royal purple is supposed to make a couple more horsepower than the other stuff, but i cant really back that up. it made 2-3 more horsepower in a stock escort gt engine that we had on the dyno (scca spec racer engine) than mobil one of the same weight, but its not like we tried tons of oils.

i switched from 20w50 castrol gtx back to the 10w40 and my car no longer has trouble making oil pressure when i start it. i think its telling me something.

I would if they made 0-40, but only mobil one does, so I wont use royal purple again until april. Or Redline, whatever I feel like paying for.

I havent really heard any good recommendations for specific cars or engines based on locations or application. It would be really great if someone could list more than just their own personal preference for their car, but like a guide for us to use. I guess really having variables a, b, c and d equals hundreds of potential posibilities. Maybe we could just start with what the factory recommends for what engine and year??

i've ran 10w40 on my CA, but since rebuilding I'm using 10w30 with a qt of lucas, which is very thick.
