I saw good spool and decent power on a few cars with the Greddy T517Z. Pretty decent turbine in my opinion.

the real trick is what kind of power and response she wants out of the car...those 2 variables are the major deciding factors.

Welcome the board, rb240driftchik. Lots of RB folk hangin out here you're sure to find the infos you need! Don't forget to read up on the "other" RB boards too, Skylines Australia, Skylines Down Under, etc. Lots of good info on RBs coming out of Australia, and thankfully written in somewhat understandable english (anything is better than Kanji).

I agree with the others regarding dropping the motor in relatively stock to begin with. If you do all the upgrades you want before even cranking it up and running for a bit; it probably won't work right out of the box and you'll have a difficult time sorting out which upgrade is causing which problem. But once it's operational the sky's the limit..

I have read a lot regarding rb20 turbo upgrades, seen lots of different suggestions, and I still have the same question as rb240driftchik... What do you guys think on the GT2871R on the '20? Specifically, time to spool 12psi and power output? Carl?

I agree with the other dudes on the 'get the car running first' side of things. When I first drove my car at full power I had only driven one other comparable fast car for an extended period of time (ct20b mr2 turbo - 18 psi, very modded). I was so impressed with the power (and powerband) a stock RB20 had in comparison to the heavier, peakier MR2, that I wasnt even concerned about getting more out of it for another few months... when I started to get used to it. Year after the swap, and I'm still impressed with the power but looking to upgrade. I suggest driving for a little while on the stock HP level to get used to a higher powered RWD car anyway. No offense, but this aint no automatic integra

I'm not saying dont upgrade.. I'm just saying, see how you like the car's power and response on the stock turbo, and let that reflect on your choice of aftermarket turbo. If you like how the stock turbo spools quickly and makes a good broad powerband, I'd suggest looking into a GT2871R. If you dont mind lag and want more peak power and more of a drag oriented setup, I'd suggest something similar to a gt30R, or if your on a smaller budget maybe a t3/t04e... Or a straight T04E, Like mine (I dont mind the added lag though).

Regardless if that helps or not - Welcome!

I'd say if you want wqual power and response go with a HKS GT3040. They make good responsive turbos but you also know that you pay for the name with HKS products. Maybe even a Borg Warner S200 Turbo??

What are the general thoughts on something like a Holset HX30 or HX35? I would assume the HX35 might be a little much without prepping the rest of the motor for a larger snail.

Welcome to NICO.

I definitely recommend something that isn't too large to function as a competent street turbo. I'm sure you'll want to use the car for a variety of things whether it be street, autox, road course, drift, whatever. So find the happy medium and remember you don't need 400hp to have a fast street car Oh and I vote ball bearing as well. Faster spool up ftw!

a gt30r will get you to 400whp easily but it can be a handfull to drive.

Yeah I do, she wants a turbo upgrade, go big or go home, motors not in yeah so whats the point of getting a small snail - Or a GT30R, that would be enough justice like Carl said.

welcome to the forums rb240driftchik, omg your only 17, I say learn how to drive 1st before you do anything like a turbo upgrade, you'll kill yourself. I'm not saying this because your a girl, it's because your young. lol, alot of young bucks in my area, fresh on the road, always wannabe drifters, those poor 240's, dents, bangs, and zip ties. I know young people are always like don't question my driving ability, that's why I don't question them no more, I just look at their cars. I say know your car 1st, then save all that stuff you got, till you know your ready for more power.

also don't drift to fit in, drift for the sport of it.

lol guys, GT30R, that like giving a young child a gun.

It make sense if she is gonna upgrade the turbo right off the back no matter what we say... GT30R $12-1300! Great reponse will get you to 400Whp (which in a 2,100lb car is freakin' scary, I know my RB25 is one!)

But also take it slow, these inline 6 engine generate alot of torque and a substancial amount of power for what little bolt on you add, you'll be amazed! Learn to drive we don't want to see you or the car get hurt, it has happened.

I was thinking about looking up those HX35's because I dont know anything about them.. Coincidentally, I dont have to, I was putting in a steering gear in a dodge ram 2500 turbo diesel, a few minutes ago at work, and whataya know... HX35's come stock on those.

That turbo is HUGE.

So far all you've said about the turbo you want is 450 hp "by the end of it".

Theres about 5,000 different turbo's that will work on your car and 500 of them are capable of 450 hp.

We need more info on: A. What do you plan to do with the car (drag/autoX/road racing/drifting/dyno) B. Budget C. how hard do you want to work that turbo to get 450 hp.

lol drifting is lame huh? lol well i wanna build it for drift and street..i want it to be the best it can be for both yanno what i mean..and budget isnt nessisarily a problem..i mean im not spendin an ungodly amount for a turbo..but i mean i want a good one..for a decent price..i mean you get what you pay for most of the time..so id rather spend the money and do it right..then get something cheap that could end up biting me in the *** for not doin it right yanno what i mean..well i think im plannin on just gettin a full turbo kit..its so much cheaper than buyin it all seperatly and it comes with pretty much everthing i need..but im not sure yet..what do you think?

rb240driftchik, I hope you have another car before you start to do this to the motor, I mean if you plain to drive this everyday your end up putting alot of stress on the motor. If it's just a track car then go for broke!!!

if you don't live in snowy area then your good I'd say do the turbo upgrade,if you do then ekk, RWD isn't the best. If i were you I'd get the GT30R turbo's, they are good turbo's. ball bearing turbos are sweet. so what parts you got so far for your motor?

I have an idea...... Learn how to read a compressor map and read a book on street turbocharging. Matter of fact Amazon has a book called street turbocharging. It will help you out quite a bit.

For example i want boost to start at about 4Kish give or take, and run into the 11,000 RPM range, and i want to deliver enough boost to make over 1,000 HP at about 2.0 on an RB26, if need be so I chose twin GT3040's but it also required quite a bit of engine work to back it all up (as in everything).

When you talk turbo upgrades on RB's it is a complete package, but you have yet to give us any information that would help us help you. Cam Size and Duration? Forged Pistons? CR change at all? Port work? since you say street and drift I would imagine you want something responsive but how responsive? And again since all engines no matter what are different this is all just speculation anyways bottom line is you are going to have to take a look at your project and think very seriously about what you want to do with it and where you want to go. then when you ask for help lay out the basics so people can give you a decent direction to go in. But for now based on stock motor, stock cams, stock everything, you aren't going to make 450HP reliably nomatter what kind of turbo you use. I would love to be proven wrong on that but I doubt that I am.

^ Good advice.

Besides, 450 hp in an S-chassis, unless you're incredibly experienced(*), is WAY more than you'll be able to handle.

Has nothing to do with gender, I say that to the guys here as well.

I'm probably pushing 350, and mine is damn near out of control at 3/4 throttle.

* NOTE: By "incredibly experienced", I mean having participated in HPDE or drift events several times, having driven progressively higher-hp cars, starting in the 200hp range, and having driven both FWD and RWD platforms. Anything less and you're headed for a guardrail.

Gotta agree with that ^. I wasn't even to 300whp yet and it surprised the heck out of me. I've driven a couple "muscle cars" and stuff with a bit more power, but the S-chassis is just so nice and light.

If only I had power steering...

slap a big wing and call it a day lol, J/k. yea it's true, too much power is scary, also very scary in an S13. 250~300hp is perfect for drfting on a s13, anything more your just end up doing mad dounuts, or hurt someone. <---- don't drift over me lol.

Words of wisdom... Maximum boost, by corky bell, is another good one.

No offense, but you might be underestimating 450 hp. Drift and street? why do you need 450 hp. If you really want to upgrade, if the stock rb20 ACTUALLY doesnt have enough power for you, upgrade to a small GT25 or 28 turbo (300 or so capable). It is seriously all you'll ever need, or more.

'Driftingislame' is for all the poser bandwagon kids that will actually get offended by it. People that really like drifting and do it responsibly usually look past my name and dont care, maybe think its a funny joke... thats what my inention was anyway.

BTW, piecing together a turbo upgrade is WAAAY cheaper than buying a kit... unless your talking about ebay kits.

If you want to drift then drift. You don't need an RB to do it. Save the money for tires. If I can slide a CA18DE anybody else can do the same with a KA24. This sounds very banwagonish and ricey to me. Get used to the platform and how it behaves before doubling the power otherwise your "career" may be short.
