As many of you know im just about done with building my SR and everything internally is new, I am just about ready to fill the engine & transmission with fluid, for the transmission i will be running Redline MT-90, but im not exactly sure what i should be running in the engine for the first couple thousand miles, i no it shouldn't be synthetic but should i just just regular oil or some kind of break in oil??

I have always run regular motor oil for the first 500-1000 miles and then I switch to synthetic.

^what he said, I'm running Mobile Clean 5k 10w-30, then I'll probably switch to Mobile 1 after 2k-3k break in

In all my engines, I run Castrol HD 30wt for the first 500 miles. Then I change the oil and filter and run what ever I'm gonna run in that particular engine.

I've been running Castrol 10w30 since the swap but I'll be switching to something else after the first oil change.

that's exactly what I did. I ran regular mobil 1 10W30 for 1K miles and then I switched to mobil 1 synthetic. I run 15W50 extended performance in the summer and 10W40 in the winter. I run a wix ford style filter relocator and a 13plate oil cooler and it gives my almost a 5 quart volume. I also run redline MT 90 in my transmission and diff. I like the royal purple just as well.

I was just taking to some Honda builder over the week end. They recommend using regular oil. Also recommend using magnectic drian plug as well as putting magnectic strip underneath the oil pan to catch metal shavings from cams and pistion rings. Then drop and clean the pan after 500miles then used what ever oil you want.

Most engine builders will tell you to either use Rotella T diesel oil, or an actual break in oil.

Due to changes in API regulations the levels of ZDDP in regular oils has been significantly decreased. ZDDP is very important for engine break in, especially in engines with flat tappets. Diesel oils were not effected by these changes, The other benefit of diesel oil is all the extra detergents they add to combat soot, that and its cheap.

This might be of some use to you...

I talked to Scott at Enthalpy about breaking in the motor. I didn't ask him what oil or viscosity to use on initial break in, but what he did tell me was about the actual break in itself. He said run it for 20-25mins in neutral at 2000-2200rpms. You can do it up on jack stands or on the ground, which ever suits you. During that time, check for leaks, fix any problems and so on. Breaking the motor in this way allows for high vacuum conditions which helps seal the rings to the wall better. Running it at speed helps the rings break/wear into the hone, as idle speed doesn't allow the rings to wear into the hone correctly, possibly creating blow-by and what not. Once this is done, change oil and filter and drive. You don't have to drive 500 miles for breakin procedures like back in the day. You may want to down shift and engine brake coming to stop lights or slowing down for the first 500 miles or so to ensure the rings are fully worn into the hone.

Hope this helps, it was a good bit of information that he sent me. I've read a few articles based on the same break in style and after pulling the motors apart from a season of racing they looked brandnew inside from using this break in method.

Interesting. When I bought my SpecV, the dealer told me to engine break also for the 1st 500 miles then change the oil and drive it like I stole it for 1000 miles. Then change the oil and drive it like "normal"

Actually awhile back someone cut open several oil filters in half including nissan's oil filter and found out it actually wasn't even that good.

And to the OP, Summit racing sells an additive from REDLINE thats especially made for freshly built engines. Your suppose to mix it in with your oil and it has things thats suppose to help the break in process. I just saw it today while looking through their catalog, I've never tried it although I should since I'm starting to drive my freshly rebuilt motor.

Actually, from all of my research, I am reasonably sure the Nissan filters are manufactured by Purolator. The seal plate design is rather distinctive, and there is a string wrapped around the filter media in the same manner as the Purolators. I run Nissan branded filters spec'd for the GA18DE on my SR20. The seal designs are the same as the filter spec'd for the SR, but the can is much larger.

This may have changed recently though, I have not purchased filters in almost 2 years, because I buy in bulk at a 20% discount.

I've heard dyno oil is good to use but no first hand experience.
