I generally put in half a quart less than the owners manual specidies as a crankcase fill for that engine. That way I minimize an possibilty of overfill, its a lot easier to add some extra as need.

I just had my oil changed last week. Used Castrol GTX 10w30and holy cow, my car just rockets now. It's as if the oil gave melike an extra 30hp! :rolleyes

Does it really matter what brand of oil (not talking regular vs. syntehetic)...

this depedns on so many factors. the amount of blowby you get, hiway vs stop/go, the gasoline u use, etc etc

genralizations are always fraught w/ risk.

I saw a UOA were a non syn oil had depleted it's TBN in 2500 miles, so it had probably needed changing at 2000.There are some syns that dont stay in grade after 5000.

As a rule of thumb yes you can run syns longer that regular oils but you will still see contamination happen at the exact same rate.Keeping u from taking fully advantage of its longevityAlso even if the base lube is good for 15,000 miles (and some are) the additvives are likely to be depleted long before then.

If I was using a non syn I'd change at 3k and at a full syn with a premium filter betwenn 3200 and 4000 miles depending on how much hiway driving I do.I once ran 6700 miles on one oil change ( MOBIL1 15w-50 w/ premium filter) but that was <pure hiway driving done in 3 weeks.

many will argue and perhaps rightyl that u can run longer. But when toital car ownership is so expensive an extra do 2dollars per month that it costs me to go with 3 k oil changes vs4 k oil changes is well worth it.

Besides the sharp eyed reader will notice all the recent sludge problems in engines thought to be good engines...You guessed it the manufacturer recommends 7000 mile oil changes for them and people actually followed it.

Yes there are some differences between brands.

And rankings change too.for example 10 years ago the GTX u use, was along with pennzoil among at the bottom of the heap. Now those 2 oils consistently do real well in real world applications and are among the best non-syns money can buy.

Also nowadays most oils carry the API SL rating which is a pretty tough rating.

And while there are some oils out there that carry it, but dont really meet it , all the brand names <do> meet it.

I run 0w-40 also. I'd still change at 2500-3000 miles.

They dont make a 10w-40 They make a 0w-40 as described above. Most Autozone's carry it.

well i know i just got some synthetic put in my car, and i got it with 27,1oo on the car, and it says my next oil change is due at 25k-ish, well, im no genius, but unless you're rolling off miles, thats not possible, so i wanted to get a rough estimate on how long i should leave that oil in there before i change it, i figured about 6k or so, its pennzoil synthetic, and id' really like to know this, as it is fairly expensive (39.99)

i changed my oil today, from idontknowwhat to Mobil1 10W-30. that should be good enough to survive the michigan summer. but then after my drive down to texas for college, im gonna change over to 0w-40 and run the entirely.but i wonder... is 0w-40 good for the cold michigan winters? because i will be driving up here for a month. itll be right in time for an oil change, so i can change something in if i need to, and then after the 3k mile round trip i can switch back. opinions?

Rob:I wouild feel comfortable running it thru the Michigan winters.

M1S 0w-40 flows better at cold than all dino 5w-30 (what nost use as winter oil) better than syn 5w-30's and almost as well as M1 0w-30.

In summary it works pretty well as a winter oil in additon to haveing a good HTHS for hard summer running.

Nizmo:

I would not recommend 6k mile intervals unless your driving is mostly hiway.Yes its possible to extend darin intervals a bit when u run a good syn w/ a premuim filter but I wouldn't double those times.

Even the spendier oils are cheap compared to total car operating expenses.

Why is your oil change so expensive at $5 per quart (for MI syn, or less for Pennzoil syn) Plus cost of a premium filter at $6 your bottom line should be much lower.

If you less oil change places charge u $8 per quart u should change yourself.:pface

I know very little about RP and what little I found out didn't impress me all that much.
