Just wondering what kind you guys use. I'm about to go buy some oil again and I usually use the valvoline max life stuff. The kind that is supposedly made for high mileage engines. 10w-30 I think...how about you?

i've heard that once you use synthetic, you shouldn't use a regular oil ever again...i'm not too sure why though or if i'm even remembering that right.

Used to be like that for various reasons... If you want to know those various reasons, fred will tell you (or search for palmerwind) Exactly why :)

Mobil 1 synth - in any form they decided to produe over the years, and in varing weights of 0w-30 (for fun to see if the 240 could take it for a few thousand miles), 5w-30 (was my cool month oil), 10w-30 (was my standard), 15w-50 (had a free case and didnt notice a real hp hit or economy hit neither so Ill run it as it cant hurt in 100° auto-x's or when I go FI)...

I use mobil 1 15w-50, I trust that stuff greatly, and Fred likes it even during the winter!

you've got it backwards.. if you use mineral oil all the time, you shouldnt switch to synthetic.. it can cause some serious leaks. its best to start with synthetic, and keep using synthetic.

Yes but seeing as how mobil makes a 10-40 synth, but is next to impossible to find on the shelves, I run a 15w-50 now...

I also run Valvoline Max Life 10w-30. I wanted to run Mobil 1 full synthetic because I love that stuff, but figured it wouldn't be a good idea to switch now with a 165k on the car.

Valvoline MaxLife 10w-30, here. The max life really is a great oil, without the high cost of synthetics.

10w-30 Mobil 1 synthetic

Amsoil is supposed to be the only one better, but it's hard to find unless you order it.

I use it.

This oil one of the best kept secrets out there. It brackets the popular 5w-30 grade and can be used in applications that specify the 5w-30/10w-30A lot of people dont realize that and as a result dont run this oil.

A first there was a lot of sceptisism to an oil with such a wide viscosity spread (many will remember the varnish problems with SynTec 5w-50 for this very reason) but the base oil of the 0w-40 has such a hi built in viscosity index that excessive VII's are unneccesary to achive this multi-viscosity spread.

Also the 0w-40 grade is the same oil, MOBIL sells in Europe (not the case for all its other viscosities) which is another indicator of its quality, as that market is very demanding of oils

There are some UOA's out there, for Nissan engines with this oil and they look real good, which is why I switched from ValvolineSynPower 5w-40 (which is still a very good choice in many applications) to the MOBIL1 0w-40.

There is some of discussion on it, in some of the links I provided in my post above (even tho they are mostly older and from a time when those UOA's were unavavilable)

The post above includes our <original> oil poll as well.
