LMFAO at all the noobs in here telling adrian he's wrong. But anyways to answer the op's question no specific year is more reliable or performs better than any other. Theyre all pretty much the same, its a matter of the condition you buy the car in. Never had a problem with any of my 240's and theyve all been different years and bodies. 91 with dohc, 95 dohc, and my 89 now. Just make sure you buy one in good condition or like any other car it will instantly become a money pit.

Not a huge difference, 1-2 hp if that... nothing drastic though.

get a piggy (89-90) hatchthe single cam will be enough for you until you get to know your car and how to drive it.once your comfortable with your car then start doing stuff with it.and as far as "mods" go, get your self a nice sounding exhaust and start working on your suspensionbut dont rice it out and make us other 16 y/o look badand absolutely no auto zone stick-on sh/t
