Just thought I'd ask, 'cuz my mpg is a super low 14-16 mpg depending on city or highway... My '97 pathfinder ate less gas... I'm still constantly checking my mpg each time I go to refuel. But 'til now, it's constantly a 14-16 mpg... Is there a problem with my car? or is it normal? anyway to fix it?

my 05 sedan gets about 20 to 21 in combo driving and I do stomp it from time to time. my wifes sedan gets around 18-19 mainly city driving....and I stomp hers from time to time

Might want to get it checked out. Assume you have checked the air filter and such.

Well, I saw a DIY video on you tube on how to change the air filter, but I'm taking my car into the dealer this weekend to get all the squeaks and clunking noises fixed. Maybe I'll have them take a look at that also.... But basically a 14-16 mpg is not normal then....

On my 6MT sedan I get slightly over 30mpg Highway. This is around 70mph, cruise control, no AC.

I use premium gas, either BP (amoco) or Shell gas. They are normally 91-93 PON around here.

I make the same trip 2 times a week of about 165 miles, and it only takes about 5-6 gallons (depending how I drive).

I also have the stock wheels/tires. Tires are Bridgestone Potenza EL 42... They are garbage when it comes to performance, but very good economy tire... very little wear and pretty good noise/comfort. I think tires can make a significant difference for fuel economy.

I forgot to mention....

Starting your car a lot will drop your mpg... Each time you start the car you use a crapload of extra gas. Most car manufacturers want to make sure that when you start the car it starts smoothly, so they dump a lot of extra gas into the combustion chamber... something on the order of Φ = 10 (or λ = 0.1). Also when starting, the car will dump fuel into all 6 cylinders simultaneously (because it doesn't know whose turn it is) so that's a lot more wasted gas.

So, if you make a lot of small trips, like going to the grocery store, and tend to start your car 10x a day, when you only drove like 15 miles, this will drop your mpg like crazy.

14-16 in the city might be pretty typical with all stop and go traffic. The most I've gotten out of strictly city driving is 17 mpg. But if you start doing road trips on highways/freeways, you can expect 25 mpg.

How many miles are you getting to a whole tank of gas?

well, I don't go around a lot in the weekdays, just work. and I guess I do sit on stop n go traffic quite often, but 14-16 even when I travel 30+ miles on the freeway on fri. and sat. seems like crap... and AaronJP, I haven't hit the empty sign yet, I usually put in gas when I have about a bar left. So I reset the "B" odometer after I put in a full tank of gas, and calculate it through the amount of gas I put in.

14 to 16 mpg would not be unusual in So Cal traffic. I get 13+ in the bumper to bumper traffic in LA, 16+ on the freeway. The most I ever got was 22-23 on a r/t to Vegas. Needless to say, I was not driving 65

Also, keep in mind that gas here in CA is different, so comparisons to other states are not necessarily valid. We also use different formula for summer, which I believe also slightly increases the consumption (~5%). Try different stations maybe, see if it helps. I get marginally better results with Chevron although not enough to justify the price difference.

07 G35X with 4300 miles. I avg 21mpg so far...do alot of FAST highway cruise. If I'm in town, stop and go traffic I get about 16mpg. Rolling along at 45-60 I get 28 mpg on flat surface.

I hope to get a little better when I switch to Synthetic at 7500 miles.

I generally get between 21 and 23 MPG on my 100 mile round trip commute. Sometimes I'll get 25MPG. The best I ever got was 28.83 MPG on a single tank of gas on a trip to Florida on cruise control. I use regular 87 octane. Keep in mind that a 6 speed manual gets better fuel economy than a G35X AWD automatic. Having the 6th gear makes a big difference. My low fuel warning light comes on between 325 and 350 miles. I could get 400 miles to a tank if I had to but usually fill up shortly after the warning light comes on unless I'm in an unfamilar area in which case I fill up at the 1/4 mark.

I have a 52 mile commute each day all highway.I am getting about 29-31 mpg

I have tested the drive to work and back and only used 1.67 gallons

I have a 6 speed manual

I have taller than normal tires in the rear and that has something to do with it. 275 40 R19

That is the trick on highway.

My wife has a gps system that tracks your exact speed and when i put it in my car it says that at 80 mph my car reads only 2600 RPMS

my spedo says i am going slower than i really am like 70 or something like that

This is a topic that occurs quite regularly. It is important to some and unimportant to others. I keep a very close watch both on my oil and gas consumption. Some never check their oil,air or cabin filters. A drop in MPG can indicate a possible problem. That just my opinion!

Interesting because at 80MPH my tach is exactly at 3k RPMWhen I had a G35X loaner at 80MPH the tach was at 3250RPMHow much were the tires and rims?

Got the tires at tirerack.com I think i spent like 125 a tire on the generals exclaims but i don't think they have that size anymore in the general exclaims.

The rims i got from a friend that had a coupe on lease and he bought them after out right and had the stock 17's to go back on his 05 coupe that he traded in about 3 months ago. But now i am back to the stock 18's cuz i F Uped 2 of the 19's on a curb

I am looking currently on ebay for the rims

That is one problem that the G's have... Is the RPM's in the final gear....

My mother has a 06 camry... It is the base I4 and at 70mph it runs only 2200rpms.. on a I4 that is crazy... The car is only 2-300 pounds less in weight.

If a camry 4 can pull 2200 at 70 well my G has the power to go 2600 at 80 and not 3000....

They need to gear the cars diff in the final gear. I shift into 5th if i really need to accelerat on the highway...

BMW 330i's at 80 pull 2800 and that is a 3.0L motor

we should be like 24-2600 at 80 for the size of the motor in the G's

I have about 1000 miles on a 08 G35 5AT. It appears to be holding steady at 17.4 to 17.6. About 75% in town, 20% freeway, and 5% in stop and creep. I drive it easy. I had a 06 Maxima 3.5 5AT that averaged about 1 mpg better under the same situation, but the Max could pull 28+ on the freeway. I blame the G’s poor mileage on the 3.69 rear end. I see over 3k+ rpm at 70 and that, if I remember correctly, is about 400rpm higher than the Max at the same speed.

I looked into doing a swap out.... but i was told it was cheeper to buy rims and tires (at least in the rear) that were larger in Diamater... I almost went with 245 50 ZR 19 but i went with the 275 40 19 looks way better

You are very wise!

I wanted taller gears but went with 235/45/17" tires to get the same effect on final drive ratio.

I may do 245/40/17 next time.

Having larger wheel/tire diameter in the rear may increase your mpg when driving at a steady state, but if you do a lot of stop and go, you may end up just decreasing your mpg (depending on how you drive).

You can go with the 245 45 17 or even 245 50 17Look at the 245 45 17 general exclaim tires on the tirerack.com Had that same size on my lexus Is 300 and it was really nice. The car felt like it was glued to the ground

You will never feel the difference over the smaller tire... nor will it change your Mpg...

We are talking MM not Inches In hight difference!

I went from 225/55/17 to 235/45/17 and I can feel an acceleration difference! Gas milage did not change.

245 should be perfect just not sure whether it will be 45 or 40 side wall profile.

I gave away a set of Nitto 555 DR 275/40/17's after I sold my ram I should have kept em
