Assuming you registered the car before you converted it and it's fully legal but it looks exactly like an S15 if you got pulled over what would happen?

You would get a ticket for what ever reason you got pulled over.

Nothing illegal about a bodykit.

Having an SR is illegal.

Having a body kit is not. If the cop REALLY though "zomg an S15, those are illegals" he would run the vin and it would be ok.

He would then laugh, and call the kid a tool, and drive away.

Why did you make 2 threads with the same question?

I refreshed and it made two threads somehow.

So if that's the case, and not saying anyone should do this because it IS highly illegal and you'll goto prison for it, lets say you imported an s15 somehow and you put a different vin on the car from an s14 or whatever car you did your "conversion" on. If it was done carefully and wasn't detectable to the naked eye, would that keep your s15 from getting crushed?

AGAIN, NEVER EVER DO THIS. I WAS JUST THINKING RANDOMLY AND WANTED TO FIND AN ANSWER.

No because the engine would be illegal, and noticing that the car would be sent for closer inspection where they would notice all the vin numbers don't match.

Then your car would be crushed, and you would be jailed for a felony.

Hmm, why are the engines illegal? What if you live somewhere that doesn't have emmissions or inspections?

The engines are only illegal in some places. Here in MN, I can do whatever I want, as long as I dont effect the safety of the vehicle.

That being said, there are way more VINs on any given car then you could ever hope to swap. Especially with newer cars, you will find one stamped into every body panel, the firewall inside and out, doors, floor pan, and subframes. If the car ever came under scrutiny, you would be easily busted. Remember, if you go through all the work to illegally get the car here (its not easy), and then swap the VIN, you are going to want to drive it. You are going to want to show it off, and there are a lot of guys like me walking around who will know instantly what you have done. It wont be a secret for long. Now Im not saying its something I would do, but it only takes one enemy with the wrong knowledge, or one jealous acquaintance to make that anonymous phone call NTSB, or the DOT.

Its not worth it. If you really want an S15, then move somewhere where you can have one.

Only the ***hole cops in California would actually do anything about it. Anywhere else you go you wouldn't have any problems.

Lol Jesda's just slick like that and Florida's the shiz but DOT is in every state so you still can't get the JDM goodness. :[

I wish I could import an R33 or S15 and have it state legal though. Just don't wanna risk having it crushed. Besides that, getting it through customs is a pain. I'd never risk going to jail for a car though. Not worth it at all.

Where's your sense of adventure!!!!

...me either.

The only great thing about the S15 is that nobody has one. And we can do whatever we want here in NY outside of the 5 burrows.

Only thing I like about the S15 is the front end. S14.5 ftw. It's got my favorite rear end and my favorite front end on the same car.

In the US it is.

Just not everywhere checks actively. No visual inspection means no one notices as long as it passes the sniffer, NOT that it is legal. DOT is a federal agency, and a RWD turbo charged SR motor is not DOT approved.

Those same cops aren't gonna know or care what an S15 is either... The question was more based around what is legal and what cops would do rather then if a police officer would likely notice illegal modifications.

Body panel conversions are not an issue. If 4x4 and hotrod guys can completely rebuild their cars' entire frames leaving only the body left from the original car, you can get away with a couple of swapped bumpers.
