Not that I disagree with your first and last points, but I'm a pretty big Quake fan myself. I've owned all 3 singleplayer Quakes...even have the first two running on my dated pocket PC. I thought Quake 4 was a great return to the mindless Strogg killing of the first two games, and a much appreciated escape from the stupid multiplayer-onliness the series suffered from for too long. Honestly, I think the people disappointed by Q4 had expectations tainted by nostalgia of the first games. I could be wrong, though.
I think you're right on the money...
In terms of expectations q4 was a lot like q2... but q3 expanded on the physics of the second game and made the movement top notch, it really conveyed a sense of speed and agility... Quake 3 ai were out to kill, Q4 ai... were there to entertain and guide the story.
to conclude... it lacked depth. and replayability, I played quake 3 for 10 years, somethign about it endured to me, and gave me a rush...
quake 4 didn't illicit that sensation, and though I played it through, after it was over... so was I.
so even though we have different feelings about the game, we each responded based our expectations when picking it up. you're completely right about that, and you can see that I was obsessed.
its hard to surpass Quake 3, the game was well made and unforgiving.
