Hello all,

I thought that this story might be interesting for some people because it involves a few things that quite a lot of people don't like..........

I was visiting my mother in Virginia over the Thanksgiving break and since I had flown in with my girlfriend, my mom was kind enough to lend me the keys to her Audi TT (225 hp version) whenever I needed to go run a few errands.

I was out and about the day before Thanksgiving, picking up the remainder of the groceries when this guy in an S14 began riding my @$$ pretty closely. I pulled into the right hand lane to let him by because I'm not a jerk and when he passed me I noticed that it was a Honda Civic sedan with an S14 front end conversion.

That really irritated me on a few levels and not just because I'm a loyal Nissan owner. Don't get me wrong, I think that people can do whatever they want to their rides, but this guy capped off the "conversion" with a HUGE double-level GT spoiler. Man I couldn't belive it. We pulled up to the stop light together and I must have been staring in disbelief or something because he started reving his engine and then flipped me off!

When the light tured green he "floored" it with a bit of tire chirp. Since I wasn't driving a car that belonged to me, I honestly didn't even think about trying to race or anything. It just so happened that when driving in my usual manner, that little Audi packed enough punch to not only suck that Civic off the road, but look good doing it. As we approached some light traffic, I backed way off to cruising speed and he passed me.

Here's the kicker....... He swerves in front of me, activates his hazard lights for a few blinks, then "takes off" and gives me the finger yet again?

What exactly does the flashing hazard lights represent? I see truckers do it when they pass each other on the interstate, but not being a trucker (or driving a big rig) I didn't see the reason for the flasher antics?

Any ideas?

As someone pointed out, truckers flash their hazards to say thanks. If you let them over and flip your high beams to let them know that they have room to merge, they'll usually flash the hazards to say thanks.

In a street race, flashing the hazards is claiming victory.

Flashing hazards means there's something wrong with your car and it's stopped, look out and be alert! Duh! :) jk

lol!!!

How about this one? Why do people drive with their hazard lights on? Drifter is right........you should be stopped shouldn't you? I usually see people with their hazard lights on because they are going very slow.............

Maybe some company can make "I'm driving too slow for the high way" lights............

Oh, but back to my original post: Am I to assume then that he wanted ME to switch on my hazard lights because I smoked him so bad that he disappeared in my rear view mirror once we went over the hill?

Well it could be used as you're pulling over to the shoulder, to warn people that somethin's up with your car.

Yeah, but people never end up pulling off the road. I think they just drive with them because they're either too old, driving too slow or just amazed that they're even driving at all.

My girlfriend was involved in a parking lot accident that wasn't her fault. The OLD man driving had this to say when the mall security rolled up:

"I was driving?"

I hate old people that's why I rag on them so much........from the smell to the driving habits to the general in-attention. I'll never be old.

Hey.........I'll figure something out!!! I'm looking into doing everything possible to keep my mental and physical abilities on par with the younger crowd. All I know is that the first time I "can't make it to the bathroom" is the first time that I eat a bullet.

You got the standard ricer flyby...if they can't beat you they wait until you aren't racing. Then, they fly by and claim the victory by flashing their hazards. It's ok though, they know they actually lost.

Exactly, this happened to me Saturday night for the first time since I never race...this old Maxima flies by me on the shoulder/diagonally lined area right next to an on-ramp to the interstate, only to slow down to normal speed right infront of me. Being that I don't like driving near morons/dangerous people, when I saw that he was taking my turn, I passed him somewhat briskly, but far from pushing my car hard at all. I guess he didn't like that.

He floored it, and "blew" (slowly) by me then lit his hazards up. It was my birthday and I had had a good day so I wasn't about to let this chump stain it in any way. So I catch up to him, let him see me right next to him, then let him floor it first. I give him a quick headstart, then quickly reeled him back in and walked away with all of my Auto SOHC fury.He had nothin', what a disgrace to a car a really like...

The best part about the whole thing is that jeansguy beat that a$$ without even trying. There's no greater humiliation than losing to someone who isn't even racing you. :D

BTW, how did you like the TT? My fiance has wanted one of those for ages.

BadMojo,

I just want to tell you and everyone else that I SWEAR I wasn't tooling around in my mom's car looking for action. I in no way feel like a bad @$$ driving what isn't mine!!! Just in case anyone wants to bring that up..........I know what some of you might be thinking!!!!

In response to the car question. That Audi is a SWEET ride!!! The turbo spools up quickly and it has that all wheel drive grip for max action in the twisties!! Also, the love it or hate it styling is great in my book. My only complaint is the HUGE blindspot over your shoulder............. I think that's why my mom got plastic trash cans for trash day!!

Oh man, I couldn't have said it better. I had a fully riced out Civic pull next to me on the highway giving me a hard time. I had two other people in the so I didn't really feel like racing, but jeez he had it comin to him. In a fully stock '90 240SX, I went from 70-120 in a flash and totally ate him alive. I started to slow down because a trooper was ahead, but he finally caught up with me, flew in front of me, and hit the hazards. I never laughed so hard! But it did tick me off.

Well I'm glad that I'm not the only one that's been burned by "hazard rice".

Hmmmm........"hazard rice" could be a new term unless someone can think of something better.

Lets see all the signals my street racer handbook talks about…

Someone is close behind you (or you are both stopped) flashes their lights once, they challenged you to race.

If you want to race someone behind you, flash your hazards three times with long brakes in between.

To challenge when both cars are stopped side by side, rev your engine, the other driver will excepts the challenge by revving back.

To challenge when both vehicles are in motion, down shift, when the other driver down shifts the race starts.

What to do when you won by a large margin: Merge into the lane of the other car and slightly tap the brakes three times.

What to do when you won by a small margin: flash your hazards, or decelerate more then the other car.

What to do when both cars are equal, you may acknowledge a good no winner race by giving the thumbs up or the V.

There are a few more that aren’t that important…

Thats funny.....I didn't know that a stock 90 240 hit 120.. Mine will only go till about 115 or so. But my tach stops at 110. huh

No, they hit 120. I know for a fact, I did it. The fuel cut after that and it wasn't too fun, but up until then it was.

All of this went down in Manassas, VA. Red civic (the model before the current one) with an S14 front end conversion, and, of course altezza style lights!!!
