What diff to drift with?

Nissan dominates the drift scene - Always has, always will.

i have a stock 92 240sx and i hear of somebody drifting with the stock diff but when i do it,it seems like both wheels spin together and then sometimes they dont can i drift with this or will i look stupid when it doesnt want to spin.and what diff should i get i see kits that are just the LSD gears that you have to put in your stock rear end,and i found a VLSD it looks used and bolts right in,i would like to get something that bolts right in instead of having to take the rear end apart

#1 Grammer is God. #2 You can drift with an open diff. #3 VSLD's are good but they wear out over time and when you buy an aftermarket LSD you have to take the rear diff apart to put the new one in.

If grammar is God then Jesus is spelling and Jesus hates you DRFT(kinda). Open diffs are a$$ cheeks for drifting. VLSDs are pricey and they should be babied. If this car is not a daily driver I'd recommended getting the differential welded. But this will make a no slip diff. No slips tend to plow (aka understeer) on constant radius turns which is ghey IMO.

a vlsd is exactly what you have stock. a viscous limited slip diff. you can get a 1.5 way diff like the ones from OBX on ebay. you can acctually get one out of a 300zx non- hicas non-turbo lsd. you can find these for about 150-200 bucks. you can find more info in the FAQ so take a look cause you may get in trouble going around a corner w/a welded diff and you are near a cop.

drifting is way possible in an open differential it just takes more... now a vlsd does wear over time and you can break them just like a welded. but they are the cheapest way to go..

oh and kamin your face sucks.. i drive with a welded and i like it *******.

if u dont got funds then just go for welded diff...

then save ur money so u can buy the real LSD...

or if u can wait then just wait till u get enough money to buy the real deal...

it really all depends on the person driving/drifting with welded or lsd...

i kno ppol who wished jus used welded diff cus it was cheaper and didnt really care about the cons of daily driving...

its always worth it tho if u get the real deal...

as long as it would last and you do it right...

goodluck!

just got my vlsd in, for the daily driving.... its great... as for taking it out and abusing it yesterday. it sucks for drifting, it felt like most of the time i had open diff. i was thinking of welding my open diff. but my car is my daily and im afraid of it being too dangerous(cop factor dangerous) and im not sure how great it will be in the rain when im trying to drive normal. so what are some options i have for the short term? money is low considering i just bought the vlsd, and my next upgrades will be a roll cage and bigger fmic. im a full time student with a part time job and i barely get paid anything. it would take me like 4 months to save up for a kaaz. whats up with the 300zx lsd? im wondering about that...

If its your daily driver, just hold off for awhile. Just wait and save up for a LSD.

VLSDs are only temporary fixes and don't respond like a clutch type. I agree with saving for a clutch type.

Yeah well your mom sucks and it isnt face, dont come in here bashing on Kamin he knows 10x more than you know...If you dont like what someone says dont be rude about it, especially to a respected guy with lots of knowledge. The VLSD does not come stock in all 240's. It is a good alternative to the open diff. but will not work as well if you have a stictly track driven 240, clutch types are good. I would reccomend the S15 helical or Kaaz 1.5 way, 2 way is too much for a daily.

driftnslide!!!!!!!! Step slowly out of your S Chassis. Now drop the keys on the sidewalk. Walk slowly away from the S and towards the station wagon. This will just be a warning but next time I catch you driving an S I'll have to write you a ticket for being foolish.

People who pay $300 to put a VLSD in their S13 are silly.

for the record. welded diffs aren't that bad. i have a few friends who drift regularly with them and they have absolutely no problems. only one broke because the weld job was less than ideal. as long as you got the power to rip those tires loose you'll be fine. and an open diff does suck real bad for drifting. and i'm not argueing. i'm just saying, it all depends on your style and what you do well with. if i had the money i'd get a 1.5 or 2way clutch type lsd.

I second this question...

also, what will the driving characteristics of a 2 way be as a daily?

It clunks, that's about it. Your tires might squeak every now and then when making tight turns.

You dont want a 2 way dif. for a daily drive...lock up on decel = not fun when your not expecting it, 1.5 way is way more streetable.

I believe the package (on S14's at least?) was if you have abs you will have VLSD

yeah, the abs package included the vlsd. so if you have abs, you have a vlsd. or if you think like me, buy one and swap the diff out to open and resell the car for a free diff. that was my plan, i never went through with it though.
