Too cheap for a whole frontmount intercooler kit. Now I also thought why would I need such a big fmic with a kit that can hold 400hp and then still replace the hotpipe with a bov and another hotpipe if im only going to run a t25 turbo that can hold about no more than 240-250hp!I DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT INTERCOOLERS but I know the stock smic goes out at 10 psi and I would like to push a good amount of boost daily driven (10-12psi) what do you guys recommend? The s15 smic is a little bigger would that be more sufficient than then s13 smic? What do you guys think about the starion fmic? Also I really dont know what I wanna do about inttercooler piping. The import company around have a bad reputation in my eyes and I dont trust them with my car. :help Please help I really dont know what to do even though it would be nice to get a greddy vspl but its just out my price range. Hope replies are helpful Thanks

hmmmm many decide to use junkyard ic's off of older mitsus. starions, and whatnot. go on ebay and search for used intercooler you should find many on there. enjoy

I know that J-Spec Tuner (mod here on the forum) runs a JZA80 (MKIV Supra turbo) stock SMIC. I mean hell, the thing has to support 320hp stock so it must be decent. I am looking for an ARC SMIC myself (eBay). A Starion IC is a good choice that is used by lots of folks for home brew setups, but needs custom piping.

Is the ARC the stock smic sr20det? Do you know anything about the s15 smic?Looking at all the choices I have but what size am I looking for? I mean whats too small and whats too big? Why does the "core" matter, what is that? The junkyard ic's reliable? or not reliable? pros and cons? with the supra and starion ic's?

all i know about ICs is that the bigger it is, the more lag you get, but you can run higher psi.

the s15 intercooler is 2cm thicker, at 8 cm compared to our 6 cm thick.

I highly recommend the isuzu npr's cores. They come in small, medium and big sizes. They are those weird looking diesel trucks w/o a nose. A medium should be more than enough for your application, and I don't think a big core would fit w/o having to hack the body or bumper. Oh, yeah, they have to be turbo diesel models of course.

do some junkyard scavenging. what you need is size versus amount of fins. the number of fins really dictates the effeciency of the cooler. the bigger the cooler, the more fins you can fit in it, though. also, try to find one that isn't mounted low. lower mounted IC's need more plumbing to reach and take longer to pressurize the air resulting in more lag.

Volvo 740T intercoolers are also humungous, light, and flow extremely well. It even has a little drainplug for oil on the bottom.

Like they said, find cheap ones is a junkyard. You could even find like two or three mitsu smic's and weld the cores together at a muffler shop. On Ebay right now theres one with three lancer cores welded together. But thats like the thickest intercooler in the world so noone can probably fit it in their engine bay.

Just pic up one off ebay for 400 or so and get the piping made up at a muffler shop....

I actually ended up just picking up a 1g DSM sidemount for $30 (temporary). 1g DSM coolers are actually pretty damn efficent, there is a company that makes a kit that is basically 2 of them welded together, cools as good as most frontmounts but with less pressure drop.

Thanks alot guys for the info.J-spec tuner- what site can I find the dsm ic you're taling about. How much boost do you have running on the 1g dsm? Also on daily driving? Did the side mount go right where you replace the sr20det's or did you do some more piping?-The s15 is 2 inches thicker, so does that mean the core is bigger. Is 2 inches a big difference? Can it support 11-12 psi daily driven?Chingon-Also the isuzu npr's are those fmic's? What do you mean there are small medium and big sizes

yeah, you would have to custom fmic it. I mean the surface areas are small, medium, and big. Rotary heads use them all the time and those guys are really boost crazy.

Have you researched alcohol injection. Most kits are only around $300 and do the same temp. drop as a front mount IC. My friend was the first in the US to put alcohol injection into his WRX and has a nice write up here http://wrxhackers.com/alchystuff So far he's hooked up that, the first ever Jackson supercharged Civic Si, the second in the world Sti and we'll be working on an evo 8 and srt-4 coming spring. Like i said, alcohol injection is very cheap and works very well and safe. Check it out.

but alcohol is twice as expensive, and you must use twice as much to have the same energy burn as gasoline. But once you do it, it's quite nice.

I would recommend lpg (liquified propane gas) myself.

Well over a long period of time, it will end up costing you more then a FMIC, but it also depends on how much of it you use. My mentor, the guy with the wrx has set his to wear the alcohol kicks in at 10lbs of boost, if he doesn't go over ten then he won't use any. But he runs his car with 24lbs of boost on normal highway conditions. Yeah nutz huh, but he's very knowledgable about this kind of stuff, if your interested i can show you my towns car forum, where they're more write-ups to view plus you can pm him questions. our sites url is http://www.coldspeed.net

I would be really nice to get something like that, but remember I have a little t25 that can't go over 14psi. Also is it effective on a smic?

Yeah he didn't want to buy a front mount so he just upgraded to the sti intercooler which is located in the stock intercooler spot, where the air from the duct enters. Highly effective, like i said. Any questions you have just join our site, he's a pretty friendly guy and its way worth it to do. Average price is $300 for the kit and you get on average 50hp. Alcohol allows you to turn that boost way up. Also he just has his to kick in at 10psi, but that number is adjustable to whatever you want it to be. He also says that he only has to fill up the tank (25oz) like the size of a nalgene bottle, thats actually what they use, those things wont break, anyways. He only has to refill the tank of alki about every 4 times he fills up the tank of gasoline, but like i said thats because he runs his car high boost almost all the time. Still interested?

My friend has 420 WHP on a stock sidemount in his supra, maybe try one of those...

So i take it he has both alcohol and gasoline running? If so, how does he prevent the car from running super rich when using gasoline if the injectors have to push twice as much fuel w/alcohol?

What would you like toledo? Alcohol injection or front mounted npr ic? If you mean alcohol, then yes it's very effective, and you don't really need an intercooler. If you mean the npr ic, then yes, it's more effective than a smic, I've seen guys run t-78's on the bigger core, with crazy amounts of boost.

The alcohol goes in through a seperate injector.

One shouldn't rely on alcohol, just use it as a safeguard rather than a substitute.

why would it areitu? I mean, it can run through all the injectors. And I think alcohol is a good substitute, just expensive, ask the brazilians.

I'm talking about something like an add-on alcohol injection kit, not a full blown methanol-breathing engine. If you built a unit that would mist alcohol into your intake manifold at some level of boost, you could prevent detonation pretty well.
