What cams for 400hp ca18det ?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Me and a few friends are building ca18det engines with JE pistons, Pauter rods , Total seal piston rings, Ported cyl. heads,GT2871R .86 ar turbo(or GT3071R) , SS ex. manifold etc. .I want an engine that has useable torque . I do not want an engine with most of the torque starting at say 4500-5000rpm .We are wondering what cams to use .I am looking primarily at HKS 256/264 IN/EX , and I am buying Tomei stiffer valve springs . Some people use 256IN and 264EX . Others use 264 ON BOTH .We need som info here .What are your experiences with these cams .__________________turbokongen

I would say the tomei 270° procams for the 400HP level... Although getting cams will completely negate the goals listed in your sig. There is no way between the .86 A/R 2871R and cams will you have any usable torque down low. I wouldn't even expect the .86 A/R turbine to hit full boost until around 5k. You might be better off with the .64 A/R. Also, I don't think you are going to reach your 400HP goal with that turbo. Maybe 300-320.

A 0.86 A/R GT2871R probably has a good chance at 400rwhp.

An SR with a GReddy intake manifold and HKS Step 2 264's put down about 360-370rwhp with a 0.64 A/R GT2871R. I imagine a CA will need a load of boost to do it, but the 71mm 56 trim wheel has pretty "long" efficiency islands, so it shouldn't be a hinderance.

Going to lag really badly though. That turbo spools up around 4100-4300 RPM on an SR that has an extra 200cc's on you.

I really don't ever reccoment a .86AR on the CA. It's just too small...

you should just spray it and be done with.

GT2871, boost it like 30-32psi should get your your HP goal. .86 A/R on ss auto chrome.. have fun putting it in.

just a thought.. .58A/R will make full boost at 4100 right now with 270 cams.

have fun

and just for the fact. there is no useable tq on CA with big signle. unless you make it to ca20 or buy something bigger or like I said.. spray it!!!!!

I would get the bigger 3071r. It would spool late, but even if full boost wasn't realized by 5300 rpm the engine will be built to handle more than the stock rev limit of 7400. With all that stuff it ought to be able to rev to 9k. So it's all good.

Is there a .58 A/R housing available? I was planning on this turbo (the .64 A/R version) for my setup. I really don't mine the lag...that's what downshifting is for

You get better gas mileage off boost anyway, Hehehe

downshifting is worthless on higher load with higher gear... from 3rd gear up .. you will have major lag when you shift it ( couple seconds) before you even make a full boost again if you dont wacth out.you set you cam timming, whole ignition map, ect that help you alot.

:float: you are doing great as mod, but you are #1 post whore that I know!!!!

Hey T88, where are you located? I'd like to see your car after I get mine done if you're not too far away.

i would definately spray it if i wanted low-end torque with the ca and that turbo. wouldnt do it any other way. get your stand-alone to spray it at full throttle under a certain boost level... i hope to god youre using a stand-alone.

Makes no sense spraying the CA out of the hole. From 1000rpm to 3200rpm with a real decent turbo, this engine moves at its own pace unless you have a standalone and you advance the timing between 1000 and 3200rpm.

BTW, Ryan is the post-whore that all must bow to.

he is talking about useable tq on CA. there is no tq gain from ca with 1.8l engine enough with advance timming from 1000-4000. yes it will move but that is not going to be enough to make useable tq.

just like 1j engine trying to get more tq on bottom end than 2j.. no matter how good you can tune. you will never find more tq WITH same set up on 1j, and 2j.. 0.5 displacement is huge. same here.1.8l can do only produce so much tq on its own.. that is why most of jap car and tomie offers ca20. ex. t88 with 1.8l vs t88 with 2.0l, there is a tq differece. i have tuned plenty of jz enough to know what needs to be done. same here.

same thing.. he wants useable tq... then spray it.. easy tq. that is the way I look at.

if you have a thought more than welcome. I dont know nothing but all I know is from my experience.

I couldn't agree more. If you take 2 identical engines one, with more displacement than the other, the larger motor will always make more torque. It's simply physics....

all this displacement talk has reminded me.. a while back someone found some nismo pistons for the ca that were rediculous, like 2.1l or something. they were like, 87.5mm or something rediculous. they were high-compression if i remember correctly. anyone else remember that? you can really bore the ca out like crazy (though at that point you can probably see through the cylinder walls)

If you weren't worried about longiviety, I'll bet you could go to 86/87mm. Not much cylnder wall left at that point though...

Thanks for a lot of input. We were thinking of running 400hp on engine, not wheel hp .I guess something like 350-370whp is what we are looking for .I am currently running the GT28RS .86ar .If the GT2871R with the .64ar is sufficient for this kind og power range, do you guys think this would have aprox. the same spoolup as the GT28RS .86ar ? I am not expecting any amount of torque under 3800-4200 rpm . Bit it would be nice to have good torque from at least 4000rpm .We are considering the Tomei 260 IN and EX cams with the stiffer springs . How much rpm could we using with this setup?8000-8500 ?? without getting into trouble ?

2871R .64 is probably too small for that power. Get better rod bolts and you'll be set to rev that high.

if you are looking for the tq. spray your motor. if you dont like spraying your motor then do ca20, if you dont like that go bigger engine and sell your ca18. you will asking question that is not possible to do when you want to make a power but you want to have tq on bottom end at the same time. ca18 is small engine, no tq. no matter how you do, you are always lack of tq on bottom than sr20 or rb20(because of displacement). ca18 can be fast but to be fast, you need power of top end not on bottom end. if you are asking for bottom end tq with your hp figure then it is impossible. I have done many of set up and not going to happen.

spray it or get a bigger engine. if you want to get tq. CA is for power not for tq. I have a 2jzgte sc300 with T88H.. 3.2 stroker. yes I have plently tq on bottem end, because I have twices size of displacement then ca18. I dont make peak tq at 3000 rpm like V8 does.

bigger the turbo moves peak tq to the higher rpm=with 1.8l 300-400hp figure turbo is worthless on below 3500-4000. simple.

forget about tq on bottom end with ca18. just make up power on top end.

A .64 A/R GT2871R has already put out 370rwhp on an SR with cams and an intake manifold. I think it was around 19 psi or so. A few .86 A/R 2871R's have put out 380-390rwhp, so it's only a matter of time before someone pushes one to over 400rwhp. The compressor is not the problem at all, it has the flow for 360rwhp.

The problem is that you are working with a 1.8L engine, so you are going to have to run high high boost to get 360rwhp out of it. I'd say 20-22 psi just to have a shot at 360rwhp, and even then it might take more.

It'll probably do a solid 340rwhp on a CA though, and still spool up pretty well. I'd say at least as fast as a .86 GT28RS(which is a retarded combo IMO). The .64 A/R GT2871R outspools the few GT28RS .86 dynos I've seen by about 300rpm on the dyno on SRs.

OK .How much faster will the .64 GT2871R spool up compared to the .86 ar GT2871R ?I will also be porting the turbo . The .64 ar housings can be ported a lot better , but it is still the same turbine wheel and turbine outlet diameter . I also port the wastegate outlet bigger . But I am worried thar the .64 ar housing is just too small to flow 370-380whp . PS I am not going to sprau it .

A .64 housing too small to flow 370-380 RWHP? Dude, go get a .86 housing and tell me how you like it.
