You sure about that? I could have sworn they have a few R710s and even R810s in their rack. Maybe they just don't offer the performance package that is needed. Sometimes hosting companies would rather sell virtual systems then a whole system. This typically makes them more money.AZhitman wrote:LOL @ Gatorhost.
Their top-line server couldn't handle our traffic. Not even close.

If you talk to Kristen(guy) that's my buddy. He's in TXJesda wrote:Host Gator rocks. $10/mo and I GET AN AMERICAN WHO SPEAKS ENGLISH 24 HOURS A DAY WHEN I CALL FOR HELP.
I'd pay $30 for that level of service, but don't tell them I said that.
Think about the profit on that $10/month....when they throw between 500 and 1000 people on the same server that you're on (called overselling)...Jesda wrote:Host Gator rocks. $10/mo and I GET AN AMERICAN WHO SPEAKS ENGLISH 24 HOURS A DAY WHEN I CALL FOR HELP.

SOunds like cellphone providers...admin wrote: Any hosting company that promotes anything as "Unlimited" is blowing smoke up your a** and if you believe that it's truly unlimited, I have a piece of property on the ocean right up the street from Greg that I'm offering for a good deal that you may want. Oh s*** you're right bro, what am I going to do when I want to upload the Library of Congress? God damn, I wish I was cool. My personal email and blog should be hosted by NASA.admin wrote:Any hosting company that promotes anything as "Unlimited" is blowing smoke up your a** and if you believe that it's truly unlimited, I have a piece of property on the ocean right up the street from Greg that I'm offering for a good deal that you may want. Heck, there's really no productive reason to talk about HG or any of those consumer-level hosting services when you're dealing with this much traffic. I really enjoy my "unlimited" AT&T UVerse home broadband, but I bet if I shared it with the whole town it would turn to ish (or they'd shut it off, realistically).AZhitman wrote:Hostgator's biggest plan doesn't cover HALF of our monthly traffic. Not sure how they can advertise anything as "unlimited" when they can't handle the bandwidth we use.
You're still wrong about virtualization...AZhitman wrote:Exactly.

Nope.PoorManQ45 wrote:You're still wrong about virtualization...AZhitman wrote:Exactly.

He didn't dispute what I said about virtualization thoughAZhitman wrote: Nope.
But feel free to continue to argue with our web guy who makes 7 figures for actually knowing what he's talking about.

Virtualization was not going to solve this issue. The hard drive I/O is not the issue. I don't know where the f*** you came up with "two databases" 'cuz there's only one for this site. The problem is purely an issue of hitting the maximum number of connections available for Apache AND MYSQL. Part of this is due to the type of table being used for the posts on the forums. We have been testing different ideas to make that work better too, but there's a trade off. Either we read from the tables quickly or we write to the tables efficiently, but neither MyISAM and INNODB seems to have been a perfect solution. Moving to 2 servers was the next logical step. If we played with virtualization, it would just f*** us even quicker because Apache alone has been needing 8-10GB of RAM to keep things going. With all the various settings and mods we've added to the forums to keep people happy, it's going to take some resources like that. This site gets more traffic than your mom's bed. As many as 200k page views a day across the server starts pushing the limits of a single server regardless of the setup. So chill man...obviously whatever servers you run for whatever you do work fine with virtualization. I've run hundreds of sites on dozens of servers with dozens of different configurations (including using virtualization which caused issues of its own, so it's not some magic bullet).
I'm used to it.AZhitman wrote:Brien - Even if you're right (which you're not), no one cares (as usual).
