so, my friend and i just got done my head gasket work. it is 4 am. when i started the car, the car didnt crank at all...and we found out that we forgot to hook up the starter...and after that, it started!!!!

It still smokes like hell...white smoke....i have no idea what is going on now. my friend said most probably i have bad piston rings.....im just wondering what is your opinion on this? is there any way to check whether or not the piston ring is bad? or what else might it be?

like really white smoke? did you hydrolock the motor and that's why you had to replace the head gasket? it seems like water burning off in the cylinders. did the car seem to run fine or no?

Do a compression test, record the numbers. Then add a teaspoon of oil into each combustion chamber, if the numbers go up dramatically then your rings are bad.

how long did you let it run, it will take a few minutes for the smoke to go away.

usually if your piston rings are bad, the smoke is going to have a blue tint to it. Also do a leak down test and compression test.

Not necessarily. Some synthetics burn white. And besides, doing a quick compression test like what Speed pointed out takes all of 15 minutes and will give you a better idea of what's going on. However, a leak down test would be the best thing to do to be absolute.

Also depends on where you are located, altitude sometimes at higher altitude you run a little white smoke.

did the compression test today and it was 60, 90, 170, 165I will replace the gaskets and piston rings tomorrow. if it is not the turbo problem, it should be fine if i change the piston rings and gaskets right?

if your doing rings, you might as well do bearings as well

just a quick qestion, did you check the head and block deck for straightness? im asking because im guessing you chaged the head gasket because you blew it right? if the head or block deck is warped the new gasket will do the same thing as a the old blow one.

it'll be a good bit of work to overbore the cylinder walls w/ the motor in the car, but they should at least be honed. if ur gonna replace pistons though go aftermarket if u plan on makin crazy power down the road

the whole engine is out of the car now. and we took everything aparts already cz we were gonna replace the piston rings, but we found out the two pistons were cracked. I guess I will go with the oem and they are cheap on heavythrottle.com

it costs about 1500 to go with 90mm cp pistons. (that includes the 90mm headgasket, rings and pistons, sleeves, and installation)

although, if you do that, you might as well replace your bearings, get new rods, and arp main and head studs)

I went with ACL coated bearings ($190), eagle rods ($300), and ARP main and head studs ($250). Installation cost me $175. (thats a total of $740 on top of the cost of the 2.2L bore)

Hate that when you put all that work in and something else goes wrong!
