I want to install my walbro fuel pump to finalize my SR swap but from the How To articles, it says to crank the engine till it doesn't start. So my question is, would I HAVE to do this? Since I can't crank my SR? Or is there some other way?

thats to like get all the fuel out right so you dont make a mess....i think...anyways i dont think you would need to do it then. Wait for others to chime in tho.

My concern with the walbro is it really ok to just crimp the new pump onto the old wires and its submerged with gasoline? I get this weard sensation like it will ignite it... I guess thats cause im mildly retarded with electrical ****.

Is that what it says in the writeup?

Some people crimp some solder. Haven't heard of any gas tanks blowing up *knock on wood* but I still dunno whats up with cranking the engine before doing it?

Im just paranoid that there will be a current going through the gasoline and combust it.... I guess if you think about it though if you stick a positive and negative in a bucket of gas it will just complete the circuit not actually explode.... Unless there is an actual spark then KABOOOM!

Does that sound right?

thats the way the instructions say to hook it up.. If the car does explode and you live.. just sew, and become rich.

It wont explode....same principle to throwing a match into a bucket of gas. Its not near the flash point. Liquid gas in quantity doesnt ignite the vaporized form does.

Thats not my question though. My question is if I have to crank the engine before installing it I guess to get out any excess fuel in the fuel lines?

The whole point of cranking is to get teh fuel out of the lines so you don't make a mess. You don't have to do it, but I'll just tell you to try and crimp off the fuel lines to keep a gallon of gas from pouring back on you when you remove them from their nipples.

Alrite thanks man! Well either way I have to siphon out the gasoline thats inside becuase its unleaded, so I guess I don't have to worry about that too much.

Uh, you do realize that gas is an insulator right? why do you think all the solder connections on your old fuel pump are open to the gasoline? The only way you could possibly "blow yourself up" would be to have the ground and 12v touching each other on the fuel pump.

When I installed my walbro I just filled the tank that day, I did the whole job with a full tank. I don't know why you would need to drain the tank proir to instalation, since youre doing all the work from a hole in the top of the tank.

I went through a spat of fuel pressure/fuel injector/fuel filter/fpr problems, so I have probably disconected the fuel lines at least a couple dozen times. After about the 3rd or 4th time I stopped trying to drain the fuel pressure before pulling the lines. Unless the car was just running the fuel pressure in the system is virtually nil.

Throw some rags down and have at 'er

My first post was in response to some of the mis information going around in this thread. As for your original question, the poster above nailed it perfectly, just pop open the top and have at it. You can disconnect the lines after removing the screws that hold the fuel pump bracket to the gas tank and have them dangle inside the tank to prevent gas from getting anywhere.

You have to pump it out because it is unleaded? Care to explain?

When I installed my Walbro I too had filled my tank the day before. I wasn't expecting the pump to get to me so quickly. I started freaking out when I disconnected the fuel lines and gas started flowing down the outside of the tank to the bottom of the car but like T-rev said just get some rags and have a water hose on standy to wash down the undercarraige of your car. OO what I meant was that for the SR I need to run 91 and the gas inside of it rite now is the lower fuel. Thanks alot positronone, I did read your guide, thats how I'm gonna do mine. I'm just going to follow your steps
