Going from OEM R33 to Tomei Pons and I am considering deleting the VTC. I would replace the pulleys with Tomei as well to allow for proper degreeing then adjustment via dyno. But after a bit of reading I am not so sure IE rb25-vtc-vs-no-vtc-t499476.html.

So poncams guys are you still using VTC, if so have you compared to without it. Also other than unplugging it, have any of you removed the solenoid completely?

This is for a GT30, AEM EMS R33 RB25 with more than enough supporting mods. Currently at 17psi it makes 385tq at 419hp

r33 vtc is enabled from 1k-4.5k then it is off...somewhat narrow range and arguable if its helpful or not.
if you're going to be revving hard then vtc will become a hindrance, else you dont have too much to loose.
stock duration is terrible on the r33 motors so anything is better.

Yeah I am leaning on keeping it on and just dialing in the exhaust cam gear to see where it ends up. It's not a daily or close to it

Don't know about the RB, but on my SR the VTC makes quite a large chunk of lower end torque... I have mine set from just off idle to 5.5k (around peak torque).

I know way back when I first started tuning my engine on the MegaSquirt, I started out with out VTC and when I enabled it, I was putting in about 30% more fuel where VTC was engaged.
Of course I daily drive my car, so driveability is somewhat important to me.

Of course VTC on the RB might be less important than my SR too, being a little larger displacement and 2 more cylinders.

I installed HKS cams with 264 duration and 8.8mm lift and found that raising the VTC disengagement point to 5200-5500 made significantly more low and mid range power and torque. Above that rpm, it didn't increase power. This was what I observed while on the dyno and was consistent through 3 separate sessions.

I would like to know this too.... I am putting a new turbo, head studs and maybe a little more..... :chuckle: on the rambler this spring.

Being on mega squirt it would be easy to enable it for any rpm range....And I am already going to be in there to setup the 2-step/launch control.

I plan on leaning on it quite a bit harder this time around as dyno time is free thanks to a beauty friend, looking to run 24ish psi and maybe meth injection if iats start to climb to much. If I can gain a fair amount by activating the VCT I will..

Not starting a new thread, but I can say this about them: you can run a higher duration cam without them telling you to buy solid lifters, which is bullsh*t. I don't fall into that "if it comes from Japan, it's better" bandwagon. Plus, you can actually call and speak with the guys at Kelford and they can tell you from experience the outcome of using their cams verses Tomei's. Those guys at Kelford are really cool. I think the owners name is Kevin. PLUS, you can't run VTC with aftermarket cam gears, which you will want if you run aftermarket cams. That in itself should answer the OP's question.

I have heard of Kelford Cams before. I would hope they would offer gains over Tomei since they are a lot more expensive. Thanks for the info.

More money doesn't make better, but they do have some awesome profiles some a little too much for my needs.
