Are you thinking of the VG30E(T) or the VG30DE(TT)? I've seen an S13 with a VG30E(T) and they are compact enough that it appeared to fit beautifully. They are pretty lightweight even though they have an iron block and are a bit lower and shorter than the KA, which could give it better handling characteristics.
On top of that, they are very strong stock and can handle boost very well. You can also bolt on the near bullet proof Z32 5-speed with a 89-91 Maxima flywheel and either a Maxima or 84-86 300ZX Turbo clutch kit (you will need to use the Z32 throw out bearing though).
The VG30DE(TT) will be a little more difficult as it is much wider but I've seen it done in, I believe, both the S13 and S14. I'll have to look around for the pictures and such of those though, its been a while since I've seen them.
