I went to a used car dealership to see how much they would give me for my Q. My wife wanted to see if we could trade it in for something smaller and more economical. They offered me $3000 for it. I laughed and walked out. Needless to say, we're keeping the Q. It's worth MUCH more than a measly $3000.

My Q

Did they give any reasoning as to why they could only offer a small percentage of the value?

i don't know if it's insulting, exactly, just the nature of the beast. real quick, two reasons for the lowball quote: 1. they don't know if you have any clue to the value of your car, so as a salesman, always wise to throw out a low figure. you'd be suprised at how many people might have said, "that's a little low, how about $3500?" still way below the value, but most people who shop for a car have NO idea as to the value of their car, or the car they are buying.

2. at a used car lot, you are only going to get wholesale (trade-in) value AT BEST. this is no where near the RETAIL value of the car. remember, the used car lot is either going to sell it there or take it to an auction. so for them to make money on the transaction, they have to buy it for the least amount as possible.

i think, at least with us Q owners, we will never see OUR value on the car in the open market, selling it to another member that can appreceiate the care, and upgrades done is the smart move (at least initially). BTW, used to work in car sales and just helped my mom buy a used car. after going round and round with the salesman (and manager and F&I guy), and getting her a pretty good deal, the manager came up to me and said, if you'd ever like a job here........no, I never mentioned i used to sell!! ha ha

A used car business need to buy cheap to make a decent profit after all the car might sit 6 months while they're not earning a profit on their money.

Edmunds says trade in is at least $5500 with 100k and fair private is $6,500-7,000...........based on average condition.

They told me that $3750 is the Kelly Blue Book trade in value but they need to pay the appraisal fee and recondition the vehicle. They also give you the value of the car in FAIR condition. I told him that FAIR condition already takes the reconditioning into consideration. He said "Well, that's how it's done". I told him that the car is worth way more than $3000 and that I'd be stupid to let the car go for that amount. I told him that we would be keeping the Q and then I left.

I'll bet that they turn around and sell a 95Q45T with 63K miles, brand new snow tires, less than a year old all season tires, etc, etc. for about $12000.

Oh, and since I'm going to keep the car, the car is going in tomorrow for the 60K service and we're going to get that front corner and rear bumper repaired. The Q will be like new again.

Well done, Doc.

p.s. They have no intention of "reconditioning" the Q.

A real dealership wouldn't keep it on the lot, since it's not really financeable or warrantable - they'd send it to a wholesaler

And a "buy-here, pay-here" lot will douse it in ArmorAll and sell it for a grand or so more than what they own it for.

I will never trade a car in ever. Sure it's a pain in the *** trying to sell it yourself, but you will always get more than a trade in. Just my 2 cents.

"Buy here pay here lots" usually try to get a down payment equal or pretty close to the total they have in the car, on the assumption that the typical credit challenged buyer will have problems keeping up the $150 every 2 week payments when the car need repairs in 6 months.

They love to buy cars at $1500-$2,000 from auctions.........9 year old 1995 car are pretty unfinance-able [at low rates].........even with 63,000 miles.

My Buddy was looking at the new Nissan SE-R Spec Vs, so we were bs'n and anyways he really likes the WRX better (Bastard!). So we decided to f with the dealer. About a half hour or so later I came up with the idea of seeing what they would offer as a trade in on my J30. Guy's like what year/miles? I told him, he was real interested, homeboy's like "Can we have one of our mechanics take it for a test ride?" I agreed. A few minutes later we see homeboy with his "mechanic" talking on the side. Comes back and says "Well I talked it over with my mechanic and manager and we feel 2000 is a fair offer." I nearly fell out of my chair laughing. Mind you, the rims alone were over 1000 and the engine mods are another grand, not to mention my car only had 70k on it and it's in wonderful condition (nothing but the best for her). It was about then that me and my friend decided to leave. The dude tried to stop me like 4 times. I told him to write me out a check for 2 grand and shuv it up his ***.

Needless to say, the next day we went to Subaru to look at the WRXs. I went through the same **** with this guy at Subaru and starting bs'n with him. He told me that if I were to buy a WRX TODAY (yeah, like it changes tommorro) he would give me 8000 as a trade-in for the J. I guess it all depends on how much the dealer tries to stick it in your ***.

Long story short, you don't have to take it in the *** from these jerk-offs. Fight the Power!!!

Speaking of (s)(h)it box, we dropped off the Q for the 60K service. The dealer didn't give loaners cuz the car isn't under warranty anymore so we rented a car from Enterprise....get this...a friggin Toyota Echo...boy were we glad that we didn't trade in the Q.

Hmmm ... harass your dealer! Frontier Infiniti in San Jose always provides loaner cars. Even if the warranty has expired. They have a fixed 5 dollar cleaning charge, as long as you bring it back with as much gas as you take it out with (but they never check this anyway!)

another thing to remember when modding out your ride, you'll will probably NEVER get anywhere close to what you put into it, UNLESS, you find someone that is on the same wavelength as you. why it's always the best move to sell our nissan/infiniti cars on this site. book value is what EVERY dealer goes by. never over book value, and most times WAY under (if they can get away from it). someone may really want to buy a good condition Q, but most will not be willing to pay $2000 over book value for the kick a(s)(s) stereo!!!! they'd be, instantly, $2000 out of equity!!! in 99.9% of cases, do upgrades and mods for yourself, but NOT as a future investment, or to ever recoup your costs. i've only had my Q less than a year, and already put more money into it that i could get back from the total costs on a sale of the car, why i plan to keep her till she dies!!!!!

absolutley agree, if you buy a car at a dealership (esp. a more upscale line like infiniti, lexus, benz, etc), the loaner should be standard, regardless of warrenty. i guess it comes down to how much they care about keeping their old customers, current!!!!

My dealer gives me a free loaner (with 2 weeks notice), and I didn't even buy the car from them. It's so nice to enjoy a G35 for the day and pick up my car all nice a freshly washed :D

Sorry, done hi-jacking.:rolleyes

I agree..... You get a car from there you should get a loaner....

I have put just over 1000 into my Q, and I am nearly done (just have some minor issues to iron out) and now I can begin on cosmetic things... Seats and then rims....

:offtopic: - Jeff, when did you purchase your Q.... I purchased mine Feb 27 03.....

I also realize I wont be getting my money back on it... At least when Im done, and I wouldnt feel right selling it to a NICO member right now... Once Im done with seats, rims, transmission cooler and filter, I'll be done and just wait for it to die!!!
