Typical temperatures on a hard driven clutch can exceed many many hundreds of degrees, so much so that even flywheels are heat soaked and warp.

Have you ever been to a saw mill or furniture factory? Those disc take a beatting ALL DAY LONG and temperatures do get quite high.

Quote » If the saw disc is a cheap steel cast one, it would be even worse. One it starts to heat up, it will basically disintegrate inside the transmission.
I'm pretty sure it is not. Here you go Cutting Tools . 2nd page. Nicholson Magicut disc. Made of high carbon steel.

Quote » How about a 4k RPM clutch dump?
Been there, done that. Many times by now. ;)

Quote » The ghetto mod will probably hold up for some time, but I doubt it will hold out longer than an OEM disc, either the disc will fall apart or the rivets holding the material in place will pop off.
The rivets are actually what I've seen coming off mostly on this kidna clutches. That's why I bought solid iron rivets and used 24 rivets instead of the original 16.

Quote »Remember, if theres a cheaper way to do things...it will have already been manufactured in China and sold on ebay.
Yeah, like many people are gonna buy a "home made" clutch on ebay. You said it yourself. Buy a $300 ACT clutch. Again that's $300 without shipping to CR and customs. Anyway, the entire 240mm clutch ASSEMBLY cost me $260.

By the way. Updates will be slow since I failed inspections today:

. Tinted rear window. Crappy manifold leak. Disconnected EGR

One thing's for sure... the guy took a GOOD look at my turbo... hehe

So, back to the shop at least for a week

Nice job huguetpj!! Looks good!

Did you guys know that a bi-metal saw blade can withstand temperatures up to 1000 degrees fereinheight? And thats from a little band saw blade!

Does a clutch get that hot? :rolleyes

Good luck with your project!!

it made it's way around the Protege forumshttp://www.clubprotege.com

i also took the liberty of emailing the saw manufacturer to show them, about a month or so ago. i hope you don't mind. worst case, it'd be great for a corporate chuckle. best case, they would have bought you a performance clutch.

glad to see it works okay, i must say my heart skipped a beat when i saw it the first time. lol... "he's gunna cut his leg off".. LOL.

seems like a lot of the members at the protege forums dont like NICO for some reason. one guy tries something new with his clutch and everyone thinks we're cheap

Oh come on, Aren't we??? God knows I'm as cheap as possible generally :)

Edit: besides...240sx>protege any day :)

Edit again: that really wasn't too bad, it was mostly just TheMAN who was being pissy. There for a sec. I thought he was my protege driving roommate which would have been REALLY funny to me.

Where? Can't seem to find anything.

No problem on contacting the manufacturer.... hell I don't mind people laughing at my expenses. All I care is that the clutch is still going strong after several drag and track days. Not even a hint of clutch slip.
