5 Speed, White, Blue interior, All Wheel Drive, 4 wheel ABS discs, 2.2 liter boxer engine, 257,000 miles, Newer clutch, A/C blows cold. The engine in these Subaru's will last forever. Great transportation with room to carry all the groceries and AWD for rain and snow. Some rust, some dings, windshield is cracked. I am the 2nd owner posting for my "internet challenged" friend who I sold it to a few years ago. The car was originally owned by a lady that taught in Rolla 3 days a week and only used the car to commuted from Webster Groves. It had every record of service with it and was flawless when I bought it at 90,000 miles. I put 150,000 highway miles snowboarding, camping, and canoeing all over the western USA and it was a tank. Never broken down, never wrecked and well serviced. Life in the city the last few years has been hard on her outside but she is still strong.
What should I watch out for? Are both auto and manual reasonably dependable? What usually leaks or fails?

I test drove a few of those a few years back when I was looking for my winter beater. I never found one that felt like it had any balls what so ever... it was astonishing how slow the car was. Changing plugs is more of a PITA then it ever should be, so you should inquire about that. IIRC, the window tracks or whatever you call them usually get messed up, and you have to help the windows and persuade them to go up into the correct position.

5spd should be okay, unless you add a bunch of power.

Watch out for rust on the top of the windshield, they tend to leak.

Rear main seals, and oil seperator plates love too leak, though with that kind of mileage they have likely been updated.

Older subarus love to eat wheel bearings.

The ej22 n/a is also a stout beast as shown by the mileage.. but it's going to need an overhaul soon.. IMO.
