If you could take a road trip in the vehicle of your choice, what would you choose and where would you go?

My Top 3:

#1 - I want to drive the entire PCH with Greg in the Roadster.
Image

#2 - I would love to take the whole family to Yellowstone in a full size Suburban.
Image

#3 - I would like to drive the Vette anywhere/everywhere.

Yeah...that's got it.

South through Utah, NV, and AZ, then east and north through Colorado and Wyoming, and back over the Uintas to home. SO MUCH windy mountain highway all with great vistas. Even in an average car much of that drive is spectacular. In the FF? I'd quit my job and drive it nonstop (don't ask how I'd pay for the Ferrari, I haven't figured that out yet).

1. Lincoln Navigator
Its a hotel, a storage unit, and a limo all in one. It handles unusually well for its massive size, and it has 4WD with low range so you can get into scenic areas. EASILY the most comfortable road trip vehicle I've ever had the joy of driving. Gas is expensive, but if you're worried about that then take a Boeing. I did St Louis to Tampa without a break, 16 solid hours, and I didn't even need a nap at the end. It doesn't wander around like the previous-generation Escalade and rear passengers won't feel motion sickness thanks to IRS. IRS also improves wet weather handling.

2. Volvo S60, S80, and wagon variants
30mpg+, turbo for passing power, 600-mile highway range, super comfortable seats, and the best factory sound systems available, period. The Swedes understand American travel.
Also, C70 convertible.

3. Cadillac Seville/Lincoln LS/Lexus LS400
When you finish a journey in any of these, you feel "cleansed," like royalty stepping out of a well-insulated carriage. The Seville's CVRSS turns road surfaces into glass without introducing wallowing or floating. The LS400's spring-supported seating is a lot like laying on a mattress. LS400's Nakamichi sound system is impressively detailed. Ford/Lincoln has the best traction and stability control in the business, so you can drive in harsh winters (I take quite a few winter road trips) without giving up RWD performance when its dry.

There aren't enough reasonably spacious four-seat convertibles on the market.

This is true. I'd like an XK8, but I don't think the back seat is big enough for the child seat.

At any rate, here's my road trip vehicle choice:

If going with the family:

For comfort and a long trip, 2007+ Lincoln Navigator

Image

I'm with Jesda on the Navigators, I have never driven a larger SUV that was so comfortable, yet didn't feel like I was driving a boat. Has optional electric foldaway running boards as well, which is pretty cool. I'm a sucker for Lincolns anyways, but I really love the Navigators

For a fun weekend trip to a cabin in the mountains, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Image

The newer versions are supposed to have more sound deadening, along with a more refined interior. Enough room for us to pack luggage and take the baby, but the ability to have some fun off the beaten path and take the top off

If by myself, or just me and the wife, G37 Convertible

Image

Normally, I would want to go with something loud and fast. After having a Mustang that was loud and fast though, long trips in loud cars just aren't fun. The G37 has just enough power to make me happy, but would be a reasonable ride on a trip that still has some luxury to it.

I am skeptical of the memory foam seats they have now started putting in luxury cars. I thought my car would be an ideal road trip vehicle as it is very well spacious, enough room to fit plenty of clothes, drinks, etc, for the week, and I can get 500-550 miles on a full tank of gas all highway (if not more, with cruise)..

However, after about 6 hours sitting in that thing, the seat started to feel hard as a brick.

Seriously, our 84' Suburban road better and was more comfortable on trips. I guess only cause I could lay down in the back. Our 96' suburban doesn't even ride that good.

I haven't experienced many other vehicles on road trips, but I know a 100 grand car won't feel any better unless its a bentley or a Maybach.

One of the areas where Nissan is still playing catch-up with the germans is suspension dynamics. Sporty Nissans handle well but at the cost of ride quality. Personally, given the choice, I'll take handling over ride quality any day, but I'd prefer not to have to choose.

And yeah, I realize Suburbans aren't German, but the G tries hard to be.

Whaaaat? No pictures either? :/

Crazy. As for the Suburban in Yellowstone, it's fun, as long as you don't have two <10 yo kids in the car being total spoiled brats. I made that journey.

I know many of you would prolly be against this but I drove the 2011 5.0 Mustang yesterday and it was brilliant. The ride was quiet and comfortable, actually felt kinda luxurious to be a sports car. The motor definitely packs a punch too. Was strong through all 6 gears. I would definitely enjoy it for a road trip

People not thinking big enough.

I would start in late summer/early fall from Kiel, Germany, head east for a bit and visit Berlin, make my through the heartland past Frankfurt, a quick stop to see friends in Heilbronn, a tour of the factory in Zuffenhausen (something has to have changed since the last time I was there), hit München just in time for Oktoberfest, blast across Switzerland and head south to Genoa, Italy and make my way down the Mediterranean coast to Barcelona and then Valencia, then take the ferry to Ibiza in time for New Year's Eve.

The ride? Porsche 911Turbo S...the GT2 RS isn't available as a cabrio.

Image

Here's the map

But if we're talking realistic trip here's one I've been planning on for a while through the Outer Banks.

The Mustang also has unusually comfortable seats.

Its tough to decide between sport and comfort for long distance travel. When you get to a mountainous area, its nice to carve corners and put the top down, but most of this country is wide, flat, and spacious. Exhaust drone and tire noise can get old.

+1 on the Vette. Driving that 2008 LS3 to Omaha was freakin sweet. The targa roof is a hell of a bonus. A porsche would also be nice, but I'd have a tough time deciding between that 911 turbo cabrio, and a carerra GT.
Image

...I'd probably end up going with the 911.
Hell, even a new Boxster S would be nice.
