Tried to buy a Versa tonight

Well, my wife and I tried to buy a Versa tonight but we couldn't find a dealer who wanted to sell one. The first dealer wanted full list, plus $1685 'addendum" fees which is their bull-poop add on to the MSRP. He point blank said that he would negotiate up from MSRP, but that they can't go lower than MSRP or they will be losing money. We drove to the next closest Nissan dealer, and wrote down exactly what we wanted for options and the salesman went looking in the computer since he did not have what we wanted on the lot. We agreed on a price that I was happy with, then when he started copying the vehicle details from the printout, I discovered it was the wrong exterior color and the wrong interior color. He came back with another spec sheet with the right colors, but this time the ABS and rear spoiler were missing. He went back to the manager again, but when he returned the price that had been written on the offer, in large red felt pen letters, had been crossed out and a number $366 higher had been written. He apologized and said "My manager didn't notice that you wanted ABS and that is packaged with the spoiler, so it adds $500 to the cost of the car, but he is willing to split the difference at $366".

Uh... news flash... half of $500 is not $366. After having a signed offer that had been agreed to and then having them come back and try to fleece another $366 out of us, I walked out the door.

So, anyone know where I can buy an arctic blue, magnetic gray or brilliant silver Versa S with a 6MT, power package, ABS, splash guards, spoiler and cruise control for less than MSRP? I'm willing to travel.

I can't help with inventory at a dealer, but when you find what you want let me know. I work for Nissan and can offer a VPP discount that most dealers will take. It's not a requirement, but it will take most of the hassle negotiations out of the picture.

Sorry to hear about the troubles so far. Here's more info on the VPP program.

Thank you Steed77!

I called him today, he's faxing me the paperwork tonight, and FedEx'ing the hardcopy for signatures tomorrow. He sells cars the way I want to buy them. He gave me a price, which was MUCH lower than the local dealer here wanted, and I bought it. None of the games, none of the "I'll go to see my manager and fight for a better price for you", none of the mind games, none of the lies. A simple, fast, honest and straight forward purchase. He's even open Sunday's so we can drive up there to get it on our day off.

Good for you... Marty worked well with me... I typically NEVER give props to any dealers. They went above and beyond for me. I hope it works out.

I got a killer deal.... I got my 09 versa 1.8 6 speed... for 7K (this included the cash for clunkers deal and a few other rebates)

If you get up this way NEXT weekend, hit me up for a friendly I'm about 5 miles from the dealer.

Side note: Got the windows tinted today. The Spings, shims, intake, OEM center arm rest are on the way.

How much did that run? I haven't priced tinted windows in 8 years.

I'm picking the car up this Sunday at around 1:00. I just bought the rear trunk organizer from their parts department and they are going to put it in Marty's office so I can pick it up Sunday.

Well, looks like my deal for a new Versa just fell through. My salesman's manager didn't want to bother sending the papers to me ahead of time , saying it wouldn't take long to do so we would just wait till Sunday when I got there. I just heard on the news that the Cash for Clunkers program is being put on hold at midnight tonight, and this was the whole incentive for getting the Versa. Looks like we're stuck with the old truck for a while longer. I'm pretty bummed out at this point.

How is everyone else's day going?

You would almost think that because you were in talks before everything happened, you would still get it wether or not that program is put on hold. I read someone on the net this morning that they are trying to find the funding...I really highly doubt the government can not afford to keep this program going. What they are doin has a huge return on investment.

To me the dealers should keep on it - but just live everyone else, they are scared as well...personally it would have pist me off completely.

Approved by the House and the Senate will probably approve it next week so by the end of next week additional funds should be available.

Deep breath of relief..

we drove up Friday to do the deal and get the car and came back today. We are now the proud owners of a 2009 Magnetic Gray Versa S Hatchback with 6MT, Splash guards, Power package, Cruise, ABS, rear spoiler, floor mats and trunk organizer.

Now the bad news.... not 3 miles from the dealership our dog, who was being awfully quiet in the back seat, snuck under the drivers seat and chewed the sensor wire for the air bags. The air bag system shut down, and we are looking at either splicing the wire, or doing what the dealer wants to do which is replace the harness, which is part of the seat bag sensor, etc. Their estimate is $500 in parts and $900 in labour.

Ouch...

Score on the car... as far as the harness. I would take a look at the actual wires damaged. It might be seat weight sensor, not a hard fix.

We got our Arctic Blue Versa Friday night.

For anyone who is interested, we dealt with Hunter Nissan in Hendersonville, NC and have been very pleased.

We tried XXXXXXXX Nissan in Asheville first, I was ignored for 20 minutes or so before being spoken to. When I finally got a salesman, it ended up that I got the floor manager (all the other salesmen were busy). First I was thrown into a car to test drive without any information on the car. Then when we sat down to deal, we agreed to a price, he left to run it by his boss, and came back with a price that was $500 more (and fewer options). We walked! ****Side note: the floor manager called me Tuesday to see where we were in our car search, when I told him we bought a car, he hung up on me.

Hunter Nissan has been wonderful, they apologized because we had to wait 5 minutes or so before we got a salesman. Our salesman, Clay took us to the car, and explained every feature of the car, took us on a test drive and then bent over backwards to get the options we wanted. When our son starts to look for a new car, Clay will have our business.

I bought mine at Hunter three years ago. No problems at all, although I haven't used them much for service.

My daughter bought hers two years ago from Anderson because she lived in Asheville, and at that time we had no problem, with them, either.

My son is now looking for a new car, but he doesn't like the Versa as much as a Civic. College kids. What do they know!

I love my Versa. I hope you like yours as much.

I second this motion. $900 in labor sounds like they will replace the whole body harness which will require most of the lower interior to come out. It may be a simple fix to the wires that will just require some soldering.

Oh, and get that dog a proper chew toy!

I've been asking quite a few people for their opinions in this, and to date the general consensus has been that I "can" fix it, but I "should" replace it.

If at some point in the future the air bag gets used as a result of the accident, I'm concerned that the insurance companies, in this out of control land of litigation that we live in (The USA for those of you overseas) will deny a claim, repairs, hospital bills, etc. since the system had been fixed when it should have been replaced.

We saved several thousand dollars on this car by not buying it locally. Looks like we are going to spend a small portion of those savings getting this issue fixed. We have an appointment at the service area of the local Nissan shop tomorrow. Hopefully their service folks aren't using the same business model as their sales folks. We've already been told what parts are needed and the estimated repair bill from the dealer where we purchased the car, but that is 500 miles away. I'm curious to see what this dealer is going to say.

Yeah I've tried a few times up here in Chicago but I'm getting fed up with the bait and switch game. I'm going for the $4500 OFF so I have to go with the 6 speed. Just don't trust the CVT. Hey I heard the AC's are a little weak in the Versas. Any truth to that??

I only drove sticks for 750,000 miles before buying my first Versa with CVT. Now we have about 145,000 miles in total on three of them and not a single problem. I doubt I'll ever look at another stick or "normal" automatic!

Rather than start a new thread or search [forgive my laziness]: have you had any of them "serviced"? I'm a coupla thousand kliks from running out of warranty . . . the service department is recommending a service/flush [or something; I can't remember 'cause I thought it was bogus]. Just wonderin' . . .

And when do they hit you up for a timing belt [and water pump]?

I've gone by the service manual, using Schedule 1 (Severe) even though most of my driving is highway.

CVT fluid: They suggest inspection at 45k and 60k miles, to replace it at 60k if the CONSULT II computer says so, or if you don't have the computer. Mine was changed at 90k. (My mechanic, not Nissan.)

Drive belts: After 60k inspect every 15k and replace if damaged. Mine was replaced at 90k with normal wear.

Water pump: Not on the schedule. I've had no problems.
