I am in a major city on the west coast, and I am curious to know if anyone has any tricks that they would like to share with me for helping the car to pass smog.

Currently my Hydrocarbon is at 414ppm (acceptable range is 220ppm), this level is extremely high.

I am at stock boost with the car, i have a spearco FMIC, a K&N filter, 75mm downpipe, and Greddy 75mm exhaust. Stock fuel pump, stock fuel rail, stock SR injectors. My o2 sensor is functional, my EGR is functional, the car was tested on 91 octane fuel (i won't go lower).

The only reasonable explanations for why a car would fail this badly are a burnt exhaust valve, misfire, leaking injector, clogged injector, egr open, plugged air filter, stuck or closed choke, plugged exhaust, or very high fuel pressure.

Since i do not have an adjustable FPR, i can't change much in the area of fuel.

I am about ready to just try my hardest to bribe the guy at the smog place.

Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Where are you located at (state). What was your CO reading, HC and CO are inversly proportional so when you tune your car that the HC goes down, the CO goes up. What was your idle at the test? Your car must be running pretty bad to get such a high HC reading. Do you have a decent cat on the car right now?

Im in Washington and failed the CO portion of the test but passed the other parts with flying colors even with a dummy cat. When I added a new hi flow cat I failed in CO again but all my other numbers were cut in about a quarter or half. I managed to get a waiver from my inspection station:) . But that was complete luck.

I was told very high hydrocarbons are generally a rich condition. Lack of good spark and/or a "used up" cat can make a huge difference. I do not have a sr in my 240 but when I failed smog in my other car my HC was 134 (CO @ .21) and a new cap/rotor brought it down to ~88 (CO @ .17 ) and a new cat brought it down to 36 (CO @ .08) . This was on the dyno test here in california at 15mph where MAX HC allowed is 88 and MAX CO is .52. This was an NA V6 but my CO went down just like my HC at each stage.

Go to a Fuel and Emmisions pre-test center and they will run the smog test as many times as it takes to get you to pass the sniffer test. I paid $35 and they ran me until I passed easily then I just drove over to the test center knowing I would pass the second time. Of course an SR would not pass a visual inspection here unless you have an arrangement of some sort or get a guy too lazy to check (not likely).

I think I would get a new cat and put on the stock exhaust just to pass the test. But if you go to a pre-test center you can do one step at a time until you pass.

Good luck.

Allow me to correct myself, when adjusting the Idle Air Fuel Screw the HC and CO are inversly proportional.

heres a clue:you will never pass with $$ or knowing someone, sr's are illegal in your car, you might pass emisions but you will fail visual, hence failing everything.

Well, because in most states where emissions are strict if your turbo kit doesn't have CARB certification, it makes the engine illegal, so you'd be in the same boat you started in, your engine still wouldn't be legal.

You assume too much, i wouldnt risk it. Not all people that work at these places are idiots. Usually (here in WA) the manager is the one to inspect the car, if he even tries to look for the emissions equipment he'll see something fishy for sure when he sees crap disconnected or cut(since its going from RHD to LHD and some crap doesnt line up right). What kind of turbo kit looks like the stock turbo seriously?!?! All the aftermarket kits I see are nice shiny chrome and all polished up or at least out in the open for everyone to see.

Is that a get out of jail free card or an automatic pass visual but still have to pass the sniffer?

automatic pass for smog...u just give them the $100-150 and they'll tell you to wait for an hour or so or until they're done and they just call you up to go pick up the smog papers.

its a cheaper ticket not to have your car inspected then to have a fake inspection done....plus then you also lose out on your 1-150 you paid to get it done

well, the car is in NV. i am more than likely going to have it done under the table kind of thing, a buddy of mine "knows a guy".as for a lack of inspection ticket being more expensive than a fake inspection ticket, i don't drive in such a way that i would get pulled over for an inspection of my car.

so rather than getting a repeated non-inspected ticket, i'd 10x rather have an inspection i can use.

sr20meplease, you're the same guy from AOL CC right?

Hm, that was a very flamish way to respond,

but hey, if that's your nature, then so be it. Just remember,

spelling and grammar are important, and they count everywhere!

Even being a long-time frequent of this message board does not

exempt you from grammatical accuracy. Bad practice breeds bad

habit! I'll be watching!

Are you an english teacher or something? Being that Neurotic about spelling is a disorder in my opinion. I wouldnt vist BBs if you have an aversion to mispelled words. Quote »Hm, that was a very flamish way to respond,
Then dont leave a post telling me to change a mispelled word. As long as the meaning gets across, who really cares. Your post didn't help anyone. Quote »spelling and grammar are important, and they count everywhere!
Right. Maybey you should read my sig again. If you look at my history of responses you will see i wont hesitate to launch into large "quoting" wars with you, i urge you to let mispelled words go as a favor to us all who don't want to see "You mispelled the word their in your sig" under the thread "Tricks to Sr20det pass smog."

In response to your previous post, (no quoting):

If you care to, (I am not obligating you) you could check out the dictionary definition of "neurosis". Ah, heck, I'll just tell ya what it is. ;)

: a mental and emotional disorder that affects only part of the personality, is accompanied by a less distorted perception of reality than in a psychosis, does not result in disturbance of the use of language, and is accompanied by various physical, physiological, and mental disturbances (as visceral symptoms, anxieties, or phobias)

So yes, it IS a "disorder" as you say. There is, however, nothing I can do about this. ;)

As for my not ``visiting BB's" due to my "aversion to mispelled words" I feel confident that I am free to visit what I will and will not at my very own discretion. ;)

With regards to the ``who really cares" portion of your response, the answer is, I care. As far as my request for correction, I believe that I am the only one who is required to care in order for me to take that type of action. ;)

It is not my intention to start ANY type of war with you, 'quoting' or otherwise. I will, however, continue to make such remarks, those who browse this forum are urged to ignore all of my posts if they are upset by my "disorder" as we have so named it.

I would like to apologize for 'pushing your buttons'. I will not, however, apologize for my desire of all people to exercise proper usage of grammar. (By the way, you spelled the word "maybe" incorrectly in your last post.)

A few things: Why launch into a definition of neurosis only to agree that i used it correctly. (?) That was why i chose the word... Also you did not bother to correct the other posts on mispelled words, just scanning i can spot numerous examples of massacred words. Lets at least be consistent. Quote »As for my not ``visiting BB's" due to my "aversion to mispelled words" I feel confident that I am free to visit what I will and will not at my very own discretion.
I never said you couldn't, i said I wouldn't, as in if i had a obsession with mispelled words i wouldn't go to bbs where they breed like rabits. Quote »my "disorder" as we have so named it.
Actually I named it. Quote »I would like to apologize for 'pushing your buttons'. I will not, however, apologize for my desire of all people to exercise proper usage of grammar.
Apology accepted. Keep in mind most know how to spell the words, they just choose not to go back over the post with a fine toothed comb. You can desire all you want but your never going to get anyone to spell everything correctly, and it shouldn't be held against them or posted about. This is not a literal war of course i have nothing against you, i replied to this thread to help you. I call it quote wars when we go back and forth. Im actually beginning to enjoy them :)

Awesome then, I hope next time we can get into a quote war about something that's actually worth wasting our time on.

I'm getting sleepy. 8:10 Calc3 tomorrow. Good night.
