Hi all,

I'm entering the final stretch of resurrecting my car after almost a year. I cranked the starter and it sputtered a bit. I didn't go further since I don't have the radiator hooked up yet, but I know I have spark...

Anyway, I'm going to head over to the auto parts store after work and I was wondering how much fluid the transmission holds. (My custom setup doesn't allow me to check the fluid level. I have to pour it in from the top.) My understanding is that I should not use ATF, but should just stick to gear oil. Is this correct?

Thanks,

Darian

Yep, gear lube is the way to go for RWD Nissan transmissions. Im not sure what the fill is for a CA trans, but I would recommend removing the fill plug, and then filling the trans through the top until it starts to leak out.

I believe it is 2.9 US quarts.

if you want to use quality gear oil, I suggest seeing PEZi720 about AMSOIL products. However, I just use Coastal 75W 90 in my 240sx because its cheap, transmissions are cheap, and I have several transmissions.

I think Royal Purple makes a GL4 gear oil also, but its quite expensive. I also use the Coastal in mine without any issues whatsoever..besides grinding in second at high speed..

Royal Purple gear oil is terrible, like the rest of their oil. It loses entirely too much viscosity during tests to properly protect gear surfaces and whatnot. Its also freaking $15/qt, which is some ol' s***.

I just bought a million quarts of Amsoil severe gear 75w90 from PEZi720 (our Amsoil dealer) and it was literally the easiest transaction I have ever made. Also, I didn't have to put on pants. Just some food for thought.

If this is the RWD transmission get 3 quarts of Nissan MTF(Use about 2.5 quarts of it. FSM calls for 2.4 liters) part number 999MP-MTF00P. Your local Nissan dealer should have them in stock. Thats the only think I use in my Nissan transmission. No guess work on whether the oil is GL4. Most solutions end up costing more than the Nissan MTF anyway. It should be $10 per quart or about.

I got some of the last of the GL4 Gear oil from Redline. It's good stuff. When it comes time to replace, and maybe before because my father in law is a deal, I'm switching to AMSOIL. Infact, I'm planning on the whole car running on it. It's good stuff. The best IMHO.
